Once enabled (or once your update propagates), Gboard can automatically switch input backends after you type an apostrophe, reducing the extra taps many people rely on when typing contractions and common quoted text.
The practical result: fewer interruptions while you type, especially if you use multiple languages on the same keyboard (or you frequently type punctuation-adjacent words like I’m, you’re, ’tis, or possessives).

What the auto-switch after apostrophes shortcut does
The auto-switch after apostrophes shortcut targets a specific pattern in everyday writing: punctuation followed immediately by language-sensitive text. When you type an apostrophe ('), Gboard can decide that you’re about to enter the word pattern that belongs to a different keyboard/language context and automatically switches accordingly.

In practice, the feature aims to prevent a common annoyance: you typed an apostrophe while you were in one language/layout, but the next character should come from another. Without this shortcut, you often have to manually switch keyboards one extra time.
Why this matters (and when you’ll notice it)
You’ll notice it most if you fall into one (or more) of these groups:
- Multilingual typers: You keep two or more languages in Gboard and switch often.
- High-frequency contractions: You write quickly and type many ’m, ’re, ’ve, ’ll, and possessives.
- Punctuation-heavy writing: You type quoted material, nicknames, street addresses, or informal text.
- Layout differences: Your languages use apostrophe-related characters differently, or one layout makes apostrophe input easier than the other.
This is one of those “small” keyboard improvements that can still save real time. If you correct your keyboard state 2–5 times per message, the reduction adds up fast.

Prerequisites: set up Gboard the right way
The shortcut can only work if Gboard actually has multiple relevant language inputs available. Before troubleshooting, confirm these basics:
- Gboard is installed and set as your keyboard.
- You have at least 2 languages enabled in Gboard (example: English + another language).
- You’re using Gboard’s built-in language switching (not a custom third-party dictionary-only setup).
If you only use one language/layout, the shortcut has nothing meaningful to auto-switch to—so it may appear “missing” even though it’s not applicable.
How to enable the shortcut on Android
Android is where most rollout features first appear, but Google also gates features server-side. That means you may need to confirm the toggle and then wait for the update to take effect on your device.
Steps (Gboard app):
- Open Settings on your Android phone.
- Tap System (or General management, depending on the brand).
- Tap Languages & input (or Keyboard / Virtual keyboard).
- Select Gboard.
- Tap Text correction (wording can vary slightly by build).
- Look for language-related switching options (for example, toggles that relate to language switching or multilingual typing).
- Enable any relevant option(s) that let Gboard switch languages while typing.
- Restart the keyboard session: switch away from the keyboard (exit the app) and open it again.
If you don’t see a specific “auto-switch after apostrophes” toggle, that’s not unusual. Many Gboard behaviors roll out automatically via a server-side flag. In that case, the best you can do is ensure multilingual switching is enabled, then update Gboard from the Play Store.

How to enable the shortcut on iOS
On iPhone and iPad, the setup path is shorter, but iOS can also delay feature appearance due to staged rollouts.
Steps (iOS):
- Open the Gboard app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Text correction or Language settings (exact labels can vary).
- Confirm you have multiple languages enabled in Gboard.
- Enable any setting that allows language switching while typing.
- Return to any app and test contractions like I’m or you’re.
If you still don’t see the behavior, update Gboard from the App Store and test again after a device restart.
How it behaves in real typing scenarios
Because this shortcut is triggered right after typing ', your results depend on which apostrophe you use and which languages are enabled.
1) English contractions with multiple languages enabled
Type I, then ', then m. With the shortcut active, Gboard can automatically select the input context that expects the continuation rather than leaving you stuck in the previous language mode.

When you type something like Sarah’ (or Sarah’s depending on your keyboard punctuation settings) Gboard may reduce the manual language toggling needed to keep the next letters accurate.
3) Quoted text and informal writing
In messages, you often type apostrophes inside quotes quickly. The shortcut is designed for the “punctuation then word” pattern, which shows up constantly in chat and social posts.

If only one language is enabled in Gboard, the shortcut has nowhere to switch. Make sure you have at least two languages in Gboard.
Step 3: Test with a clean repro message
Create a new message in a common app (like a notes app or messaging app) and type 5–10 apostrophe-based cases. Example set:
I'myou'rewe'veit'sJohn's
If the behavior only triggers in some apps, it may be an input field quirk (some apps force different keyboard modes).
Step 4: Restart the keyboard session
Close the keyboard-using app and reopen it, or force-stop the keyboard input method (Android: app switcher & restart). On iOS, fully exit the app and come back.
Step 5: Remove and re-add languages
This is a blunt but effective reset. Remove one of the languages in Gboard and add it back, then restart the device.
Step 6: Reset keyboard settings (last resort)
If you customized a lot of Gboard options (or installed multiple dictionaries/add-ons), reset to defaults and retest. You can still reapply your preferences afterward.

Common mistakes that make the shortcut seem broken
- You’re typing with a different apostrophe character than expected: Some apps or keyboards autocorrect quotes differently. Try the plain apostrophe key (
'). - One-language configuration: With a single language enabled, there’s no switch to perform.
- Keyboard switching is disabled: If multilingual switching is off, Gboard won’t change contexts automatically.
- You’re using voice input or a different keyboard: The shortcut is specific to Gboard text input.
- Staged rollout not reached your device yet: Server-side features can take days (or longer) to show up consistently.
Alternatives if you need stricter control
If you’d rather not have any auto-switching while typing, you can fall back to manual switching or adjust language behavior.
Manually switch languages after punctuation
Use the language switch key (typically near the spacebar depending on your layout) right after you type the apostrophe. This gives you deterministic control, at the cost of an extra tap.
Use separate keyboard profiles (when available)
Some keyboard workflows effectively mimic “profiles” by keeping your language sets tightly controlled. The goal is to reduce the need for auto-switch decisions at all.
Rely on autocorrect without switching
If your main pain is apostrophe-adjacent word completion, check Gboard’s text correction settings. You may prefer suggested fixes rather than context switching.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and data handling considerations
Keyboard features like this depend on on-device language behavior and (in some cases) server-side intelligence used for suggestions. The auto-switch logic is triggered by your immediate typing pattern—apostrophe then next characters—so it’s part of how Gboard keeps typing fluid.
For privacy-minded readers, review Gboard’s settings related to personalization and usage data, and keep your apps updated. If you disable personalization, you may see fewer accurate suggestions, but the core typing behavior remains.

Bottom Line
Gboard’s auto-switch after apostrophes shortcut is aimed at one very specific friction point: the extra keyboard switch you often need after typing ' in multilingual writing. If you type contractions, possessives, or quoted text often, it can feel immediately smoother.

To get it working, confirm you have multiple languages enabled in Gboard, update the app, and test in a clean message. If it still doesn’t show up, use the troubleshooting checklist—most issues come down to missing multilingual setup or staged rollout timing.
FAQs
Will this work if I only use one language in Gboard?
No. The shortcut is designed to auto-switch among language contexts. If there’s only one input context enabled, there’s nothing to switch to.
Why do I still have to switch manually after the apostrophe?
Either the rollout flag hasn’t reached your device yet, or your language switching settings aren’t enabled. Update Gboard, verify multilingual typing, and test with a fresh set of apostrophe cases.
Does this affect iPhone keyboards other than Gboard?
No. This behavior is specific to the Gboard keyboard input.
Can I turn it off?
If a dedicated toggle isn’t present in your build, there may be no separate switch. In that case, the practical alternative is disabling multilingual switching (if available) or switching languages manually.
What apostrophe should I type when testing?
Use the apostrophe character from the Gboard keyboard key ('). Some punctuation variants and autocorrect conversions can change how the keyboard interprets the trigger pattern.
