Google Photos on Android can keep backed-up screenshots, GIFs, memes and other clutter saved by apps out of the main Photos view. The setting changes what you see there; Google’s instructions do not describe it as deleting the files, changing their backup state or removing them from your device.
What the setting does
The control covers content from other apps that appears in Google Photos. With Hide clutter from apps, Google says backed-up screenshots, GIFs and memes can be hidden from the Photos view while other app content remains available according to your settings.

This is an organization and display control. It is separate from deleting a photo, turning backup on or off, or managing sharing. Google also says photos backed up from apps are not available for Partner Sharing.

- Open Google Photos on your Android phone.
- Tap a Photo stack.
- Tap the thumbnail menu, then choose Manage settings.
- Turn Show content from other apps on or off.
- When the setting is on, choose the visibility mode that matches how much app-saved media you want in the Photos view.
Google’s current Android help instructions use these labels. The exact option may not appear for every account, device or app version; Google does not publish a complete availability matrix.

Choose the right visibility mode

How app-specific rules interact with the main switch
App-level choices take priority over the main hide setting. For example, an app set to Hide all stays hidden even if the main setting is changed to show content from other apps.
If you turn the main Show content from other apps switch off, existing app customizations no longer apply while that switch is off. This does not mean the customized files are deleted; it changes whether those app items are shown in the Photos view.

What this feature does not change
- It does not delete media. The documented control concerns visibility in the Photos view.
- It does not change backup by itself. A hidden item is not automatically unbacked or removed from storage.
- It does not enable Partner Sharing. Google separately states that photos backed up from apps are unavailable for Partner Sharing.
Availability and rollout context
Google documents the controls for Google Photos on Android. The reviewed help instructions do not specify an equivalent iOS setting, a full device or app-version list, or why a particular user might not see the option.

A Google Photos Community user described not finding the option on a Pixel 9 Pro. That is one user’s experience, not evidence that the feature is universally unavailable on that phone or account.

Use Hide clutter from apps for a cleaner everyday timeline
Choose this when screenshots, memes and animated images dominate your main view but you still want other app-saved photos to remain visible.

Use Customize by app when some sources matter
Set messaging, editing or work-related apps to Show all if their images are useful, and use Hide clutter or Hide all for apps whose saved media is mostly disposable.
Use Only show backed-up content when backup status is your priority
This option is appropriate when you want the Photos view to focus on app content that Google Photos has backed up, rather than treating the control as a cleanup or deletion tool.
