Google Fi supports eSIM on a compatible, unlocked iPhone 15 Pro. To activate, connect to Wi-Fi in the United States, sign in to the Google Fi Wireless app with the Google Account for your Fi line, and follow its setup instructions; don’t start by scanning a QR code or adding the plan in iPhone Settings.
Before you begin, check that Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock says “No SIM restrictions.” After the Fi app finishes setup, test calls, texts, and cellular data with Wi-Fi turned off. Google Fi does not support the iPhone’s out-of-box eSIM transfer flow.

What you need before you start
Have these items ready before activating. Google Fi requires initial activation in the United States, with a limited exception for eligible U.S. military and State Department personnel stationed overseas.
Requirements
- iPhone 15 Pro that is compatible with Google Fi and unlocked.
- Google Fi Wireless account or completed Fi sign-up, plus access to the Google Account associated with the line.
- Reliable Wi-Fi for activation.
- U.S. location for ordinary initial activation.
- Charged iPhone and the latest available iOS version recommended.
- Number-transfer information if bringing a number from another carrier. You may need the account details and transfer PIN from that carrier.
Google Fi’s iPhone compatibility guidance lists iOS 13 or later as its general requirement. Check Google’s current compatibility information and activation instructions before setup.

Useful to have
- A recent iPhone backup, especially before changing carriers or removing an existing Fi eSIM.
- Your current carrier’s account number and transfer PIN, if you’re porting a number.
- Access to your current carrier account to disable a number-lock feature, if applicable. Verizon customers should check whether Number Lock is enabled.
Confirm your iPhone 15 Pro is ready for eSIM
Check the carrier lock before trying to activate. If the phone is locked, repeated activation attempts will not resolve the problem.
Check your iOS version
Go to Settings > General > About to check your iOS version. Install the latest available update through Settings > General > Software Update if needed.
Verify that the iPhone is unlocked
Open Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock. It should say No SIM restrictions. If it doesn’t, contact the current or previous carrier to request an unlock; Apple cannot unlock the phone for you. See Apple’s unlock guidance.

Check the model and SIM options
The U.S. iPhone 15 Pro supports dual eSIM and has no physical SIM compatibility. Some iPhone 15 Pro models sold outside the U.S. have a SIM tray, so check your exact model if you bought the phone abroad. Fi activation still requires a compatible, unlocked device.
Remove barriers
- Connect to Wi-Fi and confirm that the connection works.
- If you’re outside the United States, wait to complete ordinary initial activation until you’re in the U.S., unless you qualify for Google Fi’s stated overseas exception.
- If you’re transferring a number, make sure you have the correct account details and transfer PIN and have disabled any applicable number-lock feature.
Set up Google Fi eSIM using the Fi app
For iPhone, Google Fi’s standard setup begins in the Google Fi Wireless app. Follow the app’s instructions to download the eSIM and finish connectivity setup; don’t try to add the eSIM independently from iPhone Settings.
Step-by-step
- Back up your iPhone if you haven’t already.
- Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock and confirm it says No SIM restrictions.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Install the Google Fi Wireless app from the App Store.
- Open the app and sign in with the Google Account associated with the Fi line.
- Let the app check your device and follow its instructions to set up the number and download the eSIM.
- Approve the iPhone’s cellular-plan prompts, then return to the Fi app and complete connectivity setup.
- Restart the iPhone if the app requests it.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and test a call, a text, and cellular data.
Google’s Fi activation instructions describe the current app-led process. Manual APN and MMS entry is not required for iPhone activation.

If this is a new iPhone
If Apple’s setup wizard offers a carrier or eSIM transfer step, skip it. Google Fi does not support the iPhone’s out-of-box eSIM transfer experience. Finish basic iPhone setup, install the Fi app, and activate from there.
Choose the right setup path for your number
The Fi app flow depends on whether you’re activating a new line, transferring a number from another carrier, or moving an existing Fi line to this iPhone.
Activating a new Fi line
Sign in to the Google Account for the Fi account and follow the app’s instructions. The app will guide you through activating the new line and downloading its eSIM.
Transferring a number from another carrier
Provide the current carrier’s requested account details and transfer PIN. Disable any carrier number-lock feature that may block the transfer. Google says mobile and Google Voice numbers commonly transfer within three hours; landline transfers can take up to two business days. These are typical estimates, not guarantees. Moving an existing Fi line to this iPhone
Use the Fi app’s device-switch or activation flow, not Apple’s generic eSIM-transfer wizard. Keep your existing device and eSIM available until the new phone is connected, unless Google Fi support directs you otherwise.

Downloading an eSIM profile does not necessarily mean setup is complete. Finish the Fi app’s connectivity steps, restart if prompted, and test the service with Wi-Fi disabled.

Check the Fi line
Open Settings > Cellular and confirm the Fi line is enabled. If you use more than one line, check which one is selected for cellular data and default voice and text.
Run quick real-world tests
- Turn off Wi-Fi.
- Place a test call.
- Send a test text.
- Load a webpage to confirm cellular data works.
If a number is still transferring, allow time for the transfer to complete before making changes that could interrupt setup.
Common problems and how to fix them
Check the carrier lock and activation requirements first. If the Fi app still cannot complete setup, use the recovery steps below and Google’s official troubleshooting resources.

The Fi app cannot complete activation
- Confirm that Wi-Fi works and that the iPhone is in the United States for ordinary initial activation.
- Check that Carrier Lock says No SIM restrictions.
- Restart the iPhone and try the Fi app again.
- If setup still fails, delete and reinstall the Google Fi app, then retry its activation flow.
- Use the Google Fi activation troubleshooter or contact Fi support.
The phone says it is locked or activation fails with a lock error
Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. If the status is not No SIM restrictions, contact the previous carrier for an unlock. Update iOS and retry activation only after the carrier confirms the phone is unlocked. See Google Fi’s activation-error guidance.
The eSIM is installed but there is no service
- Return to the Fi app and complete any remaining connectivity setup, then restart the iPhone if prompted.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and check that the Fi line is enabled in Settings > Cellular.
- If you are transferring a number, check the transfer status and allow for the typical transfer window.
- Do not repeatedly delete eSIM profiles. If neither the current nor previous phone has connectivity, follow Google’s specific eSIM recovery instructions or contact Fi support.
Both the old and new phones have no connectivity
Google documents a recovery process for certain iOS versions. For iOS 17.4 and newer, if both the current and previous phones have no connectivity, its instructions say to delete Google Fi eSIM profiles, delete and reinstall the Fi app, follow the app’s eSIM setup, and restart. Follow the current Google Fi instructions for your iOS version before deleting profiles. Older iOS 17.3-and-earlier instructions may involve a QR-code recovery flow; that is not the normal current activation method.
Calls, texts, or data do not work as expected
- With Wi-Fi off, confirm the Fi line is enabled and selected for the service you’re testing.
- Return to the Fi app and check whether it has remaining setup instructions.
- If a number transfer is pending, check its status before making further changes.
- Do not manually enter Android APN or MMS settings on the iPhone. Google Fi says these are not required for iPhone activation.
What Google Fi features work on iPhone?
Compatible iPhones can use Google Fi for calls, texts, 4G LTE and 5G, Wi-Fi calling, international hotspot use, and voicemail through the Fi app. However, iPhones do not switch between multiple Fi network partners in the same way that Fi-designed Android phones can. Check Google Fi’s iPhone feature information if a particular capability matters to you.

Comparisons: eSIM vs physical SIM
For a U.S. iPhone 15 Pro, eSIM is the practical option because the model has no physical SIM compatibility. Some international iPhone 15 Pro models have a SIM tray, but Fi’s standard iPhone activation process is through the Fi app.
