First check what “Google not working” means: if Google Search will not load, troubleshoot the page or connection; if typing in Chrome’s address bar opens a different search engine, change Chrome’s default search engine. Then check whether other websites work and whether Google works in Incognito—those quick tests help narrow the cause before you reset anything.
Work out which Google problem you have
There are two common, different problems: Google’s website fails to load, or Chrome sends address-bar searches to a provider you did not choose. A wrong address-bar provider does not necessarily mean Google Search itself is unavailable.

Open a familiar website other than Google, then try Google again. If several sites fail, check your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and whether your modem or router is operating. On public Wi-Fi, look for a sign-in page that must be completed before browsing. If other websites load but Google does not, the issue may be specific to Google, your Chrome profile, or a browser setting.
Note any error code Chrome displays. Google’s guide to common Chrome connection and loading errors describes ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED as indicating that the device is not connected, ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED as a hostname or address-resolution problem, and ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT as a connection that took too long. These messages are clues, not definitive diagnoses; connection, device, browser, and website conditions can all affect loading.

Try these fixes if Google’s page will not load
Follow the checks in order, retrying Google after each change. Google’s official Chrome troubleshooting sequence starts with the address and connection, then moves through updates, Incognito, extensions, browsing data, security software, available memory, and settings reset.
1. Check the address, connection, and other websites
Make sure you have entered the correct address and reload the page. If other sites fail too, resolve the connection issue first. If only Google fails, continue with the browser checks below.

2. Update and restart Chrome
In Chrome, open Help → About Google Chrome. Install an available update and relaunch when prompted. If Chrome reports that it is current, fully quit and reopen it, then try Google again. Google recommends a supported, up-to-date browser for Search; see its browser requirements for Google Search.
3. Test Google in an Incognito window
Open an Incognito window and try Google. If the page works there but not in your regular window, the cause is more likely tied to your normal Chrome profile, such as an extension or stored site data.

4. Disable extensions to find a conflict
In the regular Chrome window, disable all extensions and retry Google. If it loads, turn extensions back on one at a time, testing after each, until the problem returns. Remove or leave disabled any extension responsible for the issue. Extensions can also change the search engine, homepage, new-tab page, or startup page; Google explains how to manage extensions and browser settings.
5. Clear relevant browsing data
If Incognito works and disabling extensions does not resolve the regular-window problem, clear Chrome’s browsing data, particularly cached files and cookies or site data, then retry. Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites and affect stored site state, so expect to sign in again where needed. Google includes deleting browsing data in its connection and loading troubleshooting guidance.

6. Check security software and available memory
If the earlier checks do not help, Google’s loading-error guidance also suggests checking whether security software is interfering and freeing device memory. These checks are more relevant when a page continues to fail after browser and site-data tests; do not disable protection casually. Consult the software provider’s guidance before changing its settings.

Change the default if address-bar searches use another provider
If entering a search in Chrome’s address bar takes you to a different search engine, change the default provider rather than treating it as a page-loading problem.

- Open Chrome’s Settings.
- Select Search engine.
- Under the search-engine setting, select Change.
- Choose Google if it is available.
Chrome uses Google as the default in some countries; elsewhere, users may be asked to choose a default. On a work or school computer, an administrator may control this setting. See Google’s instructions for setting the default search engine on a computer. The address bar can search the web, but some Chrome features depend on whether the selected provider supports them; Google describes this in its search-engine settings guidance.

If searches redirect to unfamiliar pages or your provider changes again without permission, treat that as a separate warning sign. Google notes that unexpected search-engine changes can indicate unwanted software or malware in its Chrome search-engine guidance.
- Review recently added Chrome extensions and remove or disable ones you do not recognize or do not want.
- Look for unfamiliar programs installed on the computer and follow Google’s guidance for removing unwanted ads, pop-ups, and malware.
- After addressing suspicious software, check the default search engine again.
Reset Chrome only if the simpler checks fail
Resetting is a broader step because it changes multiple browser settings. In Chrome, go to Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults. Google says this resets the default search engine, homepage and tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed, although you may need to turn extensions back on. Read Google’s instructions for resetting Chrome settings before proceeding.

If Google still does not work
Try the same page in another browser. If it fails there too, that helps distinguish a Chrome-specific problem from a network or website issue. If the problem is limited to Chrome, use Google’s Chrome loading-error help or its feedback options. Google lists uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome as a later troubleshooting option, after the simpler checks.
