Google Messages has introduced a new, in-app Backup & restore experience. Instead of digging through system settings, you can manage backups directly inside the app and restore your conversations when you need them.
This guide covers what the feature does, how to find it, exactly how to run a backup and restore, and what to do when things don’t behave as expected. It also compares it to older options like Google One SMS backup, so you can pick the right path for your setup.

What the new in-app Backup & restore feature is (and why it matters)
The new Backup & restore inside Google Messages is designed to keep your message history portable across devices signed into the right account. It’s meant to reduce friction when you switch phones, reinstall the app, or move from one Android device to another.

Prerequisites and what you should check first
- Android device running a relatively recent OS version (exact support varies by device/region).
- Google account you can sign into on both source and target phones.
- Google Messages app updated to the version that includes Backup & restore.
- Stable internet during backup and restore (Wi‑Fi is the safest bet).
- Enough storage for media (if your backups include images/videos).
If you don’t see the feature in the app, don’t assume it’s broken—your installed version may not include it yet.
Where to find Backup & restore in Google Messages
On most Android builds, you’ll find it under Google Messages settings. The wording can vary slightly, but look for:
- Open Google Messages
- Tap your profile icon or the 3-dot menu (varies)
- Go to Settings
- Find Backup & restore
If you’re hunting and still can’t locate it, update Google Messages from the Play Store first, then check again.

How to use Backup & restore step by step
Use the same basic workflow whether you’re enabling backup for the first time or restoring later. The exact labels may shift a little depending on Android skin and Google Messages version.
1) Turn it on and start a backup
- Open Google Messages.
- Go to Settings → Backup & restore.
- Confirm the Google account shown for backups (this needs to match the account you’ll restore on).
- Tap Backup (or Back up).
- Leave your phone on Wi‑Fi and avoid force-closing Messages during the backup.
Once complete, the app typically shows a status like backup ready or last backup time. If it doesn’t, double-check you stayed connected and didn’t switch away mid-process.
2) Restore to the same phone
Restoring on the same device is useful if you cleared data, reinstalled the app, or moved messages to a new device within the same Google account workflow.
- Open Google Messages → Settings → Backup & restore.
- Verify you’re signed into the correct Google account.
- Tap Restore.
- Wait for the restore to finish, then open your message list to confirm conversations appear.
Don’t interrupt the restore. If the process is interrupted, you may need to restart it to trigger a clean re-sync.

3) Restore after switching phones
- On the new phone, install Google Messages from the Play Store.
- Sign into the same Google account you used for the backup.
- Open Google Messages → Settings → Backup & restore.
- Tap Restore.
- Keep the app open and connected until it completes.
- Open the conversation list and verify timestamps and message threads.
If your new phone uses a different default SMS app setup, make sure Google Messages is set up to receive SMS before you test restores.
What gets backed up (and what doesn’t)
Google Messages backups typically focus on your SMS and MMS content. Depending on version and account configuration, features may vary around media handling and message categories.
- Usually included: SMS text, MMS messages, and message history tied to your Google account backup configuration.
- May vary: rich content availability, certain media types, and timing granularity of what’s restored.
- Not guaranteed: specialized chat data that depends on separate services outside SMS/MMS, and content received after a backup started (race conditions happen).
If you rely on one specific thread or photo-heavy conversation, run a small test backup and restore once before you depend on it for a major move.
Restore reliability: expectations for timing and results
Restores aren’t instant. The more messages and media you have, the longer it can take. Plan for Wi‑Fi time and expect the first restore after enabling backups to take longer than subsequent ones.
Also expect a short delay where message threads appear progressively. If your device seems “idle,” give it a few more minutes before concluding anything failed.
Troubleshooting when Backup & restore fails
If Backup & restore doesn’t behave, start with the fundamentals: correct account, correct app version, and a working network connection.
Backup button won’t start
- Confirm you’re in Google Messages settings → Backup & restore and not a similarly named menu in another app.
- Update Google Messages from the Play Store.
- Check connectivity and disable aggressive battery saving for Google Messages.
Force-stopping the app repeatedly during backup can worsen reliability. If it’s stuck, wait a few minutes before re-attempting.

Restore completes but messages are missing
- Verify the same Google account was used for backup and restore.
- Make sure you’re restoring on the right device profile (especially after phone replacement).
- Check if you received new messages between the last backup and the restore—new ones might not appear until your SMS pipeline is fully configured.
If you see partial restores, try restoring again once the app finishes its current sync cycle.

Wrong phone or wrong Google account
This is the most common failure mode. If you have multiple Google accounts, it’s easy to back up to one and restore from another.
- Go to Google Messages → Settings → Backup & restore.
- Confirm the account label matches your intended account.
- On the new phone, sign out/in of Google to make sure the account is correct.
After correcting the account, restart the restore process.
Stuck at a percentage
- Keep Wi‑Fi on and avoid switching networks mid-restore.
- Wait longer than you think—large histories can take time.
- Disable VPN temporarily (if you use one) and retry.
- If it never progresses, restart Google Messages and try restore again.
Don’t clear app data during a restore. That can wipe the local state needed to complete the process.
Media (photos/videos) not coming back
Media can be the slowest part, and it depends on what was uploaded and how your backup handled MMS attachments.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Confirm you have enough storage space.
- Use Wi‑Fi to reduce timeouts.
- Wait for the full restore cycle; then reopen threads to trigger media fetch.
If attachments still don’t appear, try restoring again after the first restore fully completes (not while it’s still syncing).
Security and privacy considerations
Backup & restore ties your message history to your Google account. That means your security posture (device lock, account protection) matters.

- Use a strong screen lock (PIN/password) and consider enabling two-factor authentication on your Google account.
- Avoid signing into your Google account on untrusted devices for restore.
- If you notice restore behaving oddly, change your Google password and check account activity.
Also remember: restores can repopulate sensitive conversation history on the device you’re using. Make sure the target device is secured before you run the process.

Not every device/account sees the feature at the same time. If you can’t find Backup & restore in Google Messages, you still have workable options.
Use Google One SMS backup
Some Android setups historically relied on Google One for SMS backup. This can be a fallback when the in-app option is missing or incomplete.
- Open Google One app or go to Google One settings.
- Look for Device storage or Back up content.
- Enable SMS/MMS backup if it’s offered on your device.
- On the new phone, sign into the same Google account and restore using the available restore workflow.
Availability depends on country, device, and rollout stage. If SMS backup isn’t offered, you’ll need to rely on the in-app feature later or use other export workflows.
Export/import via other tools (when applicable)
If your priority is archiving a specific conversation rather than full device migration, some third-party tools offer message export. Results vary widely and are often limited by Android’s privacy model.
- Only use reputable tools with transparent permissions.
- Don’t assume you can fully restore the entire SMS database into Messages.
- Test on a small thread first.
For most people doing a phone switch, the in-app Backup & restore approach is the most straightforward.

- Wrong account: backing up with one Google account, restoring with another.
- Interrupting the process: force-stopping Google Messages or switching apps constantly mid-restore.
- Testing too early: opening message threads before the restore finishes downloading attachments.
- Changing defaults: switching the default SMS app away from Google Messages during restore.
- Low battery mode: battery optimization can throttle background uploads and downloads.
If you want a reliable checklist: confirm account → connect Wi‑Fi → start restore → leave the phone alone until it’s done.

FAQ
Why don’t I see Backup & restore in Google Messages?
The feature may not be rolled out to your app version or device yet. Update Google Messages from the Play Store and re-check Settings → Backup & restore.
Do I need the same phone number to restore SMS?
Usually, your restore is account-based for message history, but your ability to receive new SMS depends on your SMS configuration and phone number setup. For the best results, set Google Messages as your default SMS app on the new phone.
Will WhatsApp or other apps back up through this?
No. Google Messages Backup & restore is for Google Messages SMS/MMS content. Other apps have their own backup systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I restore to a different Google account?
You typically cannot. Backups are tied to the account used during backup. Restore on a phone signed into the same Google account.
How long does restore take?
It varies based on message volume and media attachments. Plan for several minutes to longer on large histories, especially if you have lots of MMS content.
Bottom Line
Google Messages’ in-app Backup & restore is a more direct way to safeguard your message history and bring it back when you need it. The main success factors are simple: use the correct Google account, keep a stable connection, and don’t interrupt backup or restore.
If the option isn’t visible, update the app and check older backup paths like Google One SMS backup. Once you see Backup & restore in Google Messages, run one test restore before a major phone switch so you know everything comes back the way you expect.
