Google Messages tests checkmarks for delivered and read status

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Messages is testing additional checkmarks that indicate whether your messages are delivered and whether the recipient has read them. If you’ve noticed different symbols than usual, this guide explains what they typically mean, when they appear, and how to troubleshoot when they don’t.

Because these indicators depend on RCS messaging features (not traditional SMS/MMS), the “why” matters as much as the “what.” The same conversation can show different status cues depending on carrier support, device settings, and recipient capability.

What Google Messages is testing with delivery and read checkmarks

Google Messages has long shown delivery-style feedback for some chats. The current testing focuses on making delivery and read state more explicit with checkmarks. In practice, this means you may see an additional intermediate state (delivered) and a later state (read), as long as both sides support the underlying RCS behavior.

These tests typically roll out gradually. That’s why you might see the feature in one chat but not another, even on the same phone.

What the checkmarks can mean (RCS context)

Exact iconography can vary by app version, theme, and device manufacturer skin, but the behavior generally maps to these states when you’re using RCS:

  • Single check: sent/queued to the messaging service.
  • Double check: delivered to the recipient’s device (or RCS endpoint).
  • Double check + read indicator: the recipient opened and read the message.

If your chat is falling back to SMS/MMS, you usually won’t get read receipts. You may only see classic SMS/MMS sending behavior (or no delivery/read status at all).

Prerequisites: when delivered/read indicators are possible

Delivered and read checkmarks require RCS signaling and reciprocity. If either side can’t participate, the UI may stop at “sent” or show no update.

Minimum requirements

  • RCS enabled in Google Messages for your line.
  • Recipient also uses RCS (or at least supports compatible read receipt behavior).
  • Stable connectivity (RCS uses data; it can’t rely on SMS fallbacks for read state).
  • App version and rollout: the read-checkmark test may not be enabled on every install immediately.

How to enable and verify RCS in Google Messages

If the feature is available on your account/region, you’ll need RCS turned on. Google Messages can look “enabled” while certain toggles or network conditions still prevent status updates.

On Android (Google Messages)

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right) or three-dot menu depending on your layout.
  3. Go to Messages settings.
  4. Tap Chat features.
  5. Look for Enable chat features and toggle it on.
  6. Wait for the status to show as Connected (the exact wording may be “Connected” or “Available”).
  7. Optional: verify Read receipts or the equivalent toggle is enabled if it’s shown on your build.

If you don’t see “Read receipts” in Chat features, your build or your carrier/account may not expose that control even if delivered status appears.

How to interpret read receipts vs delivered receipts

Delivery and read are different signals:

  • Delivered: the message reached the recipient’s RCS client (or RCS endpoint). Delivery does not guarantee they opened the message.
  • Read: the recipient’s client reports that the message was opened/read. This can be affected by app focus, notification behavior, background restrictions, or read-receipt privacy settings.

If you see delivered but never see read, it usually means the recipient hasn’t enabled read receipts, doesn’t support the feature, or doesn’t open messages in a way that triggers read reporting.

Why you might not see delivered/read checkmarks

Most “missing checkmarks” cases come down to a mismatch between expected RCS behavior and what your device or the other phone can actually support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common causes

  • SMS/MMS fallback: RCS is not connected, so the conversation uses SMS/MMS. Read status won’t be available.
  • Recipient not on RCS: if the other person uses a different messaging environment, you may see only basic sending states.
  • Read receipts disabled: either you or the recipient turned off read receipts in chat features (if available).
  • Network quality: RCS requires reliable mobile data/Wi‑Fi. Poor connectivity can delay or prevent status reporting.
  • Rollout variability: the test may be enabled for some users first, not everyone.

Edge cases that look like bugs

  • Chat opened in a different client: if the recipient uses another compatible client/device for RCS (or multiple devices), read state can differ.
  • Device power management: aggressive battery optimization can delay message processing and therefore delay read receipts.
  • Offline reading: if the recipient reads from an offline snapshot, the read event may not report instantly.
  • Group chats: read receipt behavior in groups can differ by configuration and recipient support.

Troubleshooting checklist when checkmarks don’t update

When the UI gets stuck (e.g., a message shows “delivered” forever, or never moves past “sent”), work through the items below in order. This avoids random toggling that can make debugging harder.

Step-by-step fixes

  1. Confirm RCS is connected: Google Messages → Messages settings → Chat features. Ensure it says Connected.
  2. Check mobile data/Wi‑Fi: toggle airplane mode on for ~10 seconds, then off. Confirm data works by loading a webpage.
  3. Restart Google Messages: force-close the app from Android app settings, then reopen.
  4. Verify read receipts toggle: if your menu shows Read receipts, turn it on (or match the recipient’s preference). Re-send a short message to a known test contact.
  5. Update Google Messages: open Google Play Store → search Google Messages → install any updates. The test UI and behavior often change between builds.
  6. Clear cache (not storage): Android settings → Apps → Messages → Storage → Clear cache. Then recheck Chat features.
  7. Re-register RCS: if RCS is partially broken, turn off Enable chat features, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on.
  8. Test with another contact: send a message to someone else who you know also uses RCS. If only one contact fails, the issue is likely recipient-side capability/settings.

Privacy and account settings that affect read status

Read receipts are sensitive because they disclose user behavior. That’s why many messaging systems treat read receipts as an opt-in or opt-out feature. Depending on your build, Google Messages may include a Read receipts toggle under Chat features.

If you want read receipts, you typically need both:

  • Your device to allow read receipt reporting.
  • The recipient device to allow read receipt reporting.

If either side disables it, you may still get delivered checkmarks, but read status will not appear.

If your chat bubble or conversation header indicates RCS/Chat, you’re in the right lane. If it looks like a standard SMS conversation, expect missing read indicators.

What to watch for during rollout tests

Rollouts for UI tests often behave like this:

  • You may see the new checkmarks with one contact but not another.
  • You may see delivered updates before read updates, or read updates may appear only after a few seconds.
  • App updates can change the icon set, so the meaning is still the same even if the shape differs.
  • Some regions/carriers may enable delivered-only first, then read later.

If you’re trying to confirm whether the test is active for your line, use a short experiment: send a new message to a contact you trust uses RCS, then compare how long it takes to transition from sent → delivered → read (if available).

FAQs

Do delivered and read checkmarks mean the recipient actually saw the notification?

Read receipts generally indicate the message was opened/read in the RCS client. It doesn’t always prove they noticed a banner or tapped the notification, but it does reflect client-side read reporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do I see checkmarks for some people but not others?

That’s usually a capability mismatch. Either the recipient isn’t using RCS, has read receipts disabled, or their device/carrier doesn’t support the same receipt reporting behavior.

Can I turn off read receipts in Google Messages?

If your build exposes the control, it’s typically under Messages settings → Chat features → Read receipts. When disabled, your messages may still show delivered but not read.

What if my RCS is connected, but read status never appears?

First confirm your read receipts toggle is enabled (if available). Then test with a different RCS contact to determine whether it’s recipient-side behavior. Poor connectivity and battery restrictions can also delay read reporting.

Is there a version number I should look for?

Google can change test behavior without obvious feature flags in release notes. The safest approach is to update to the latest available Google Messages build from Google Play, then recheck Chat features connectivity.

Final Thoughts

Delivered and read checkmarks in Google Messages are a small UI change with big practical meaning: they confirm whether an RCS message reached the other device and, when supported, whether it was opened. If you don’t see them, it’s rarely “you”—it’s almost always protocol support (RCS vs SMS) and receipt settings on one or both devices.

Use the checklist above to confirm RCS connectivity, align read receipt preferences, and test with known RCS contacts. Once the chat is truly on RCS, the status indicators should behave consistently.
