Google Home app has removed the ‘Call Home’ feature

Many people noticed the same problem: after a Google Home app update, the Call Home option either vanished from the interface or stopped functioning. If you’re staring at a Google Home screen with no obvious replacement, you’re not imagining it—Google has shifted what “calling” means over time and rolled features out unevenly by region, device, and app version.

This guide is a practical reference for figuring out whether Call Home is truly gone for your setup, restoring calling-related features when they still exist, and switching to the closest working alternatives.

What the Call Home feature was (and why it may disappear)

“Call Home” was commonly associated with Google Assistant-enabled calling behavior from Google Home devices—often framed around contacting a home line, a family member, or a preconfigured destination. In practice, the feature’s availability depended on product generation (Nest/Home speakers vs. displays), app versions, and whether your account and country supported Assistant calling flows.

When Google changes Assistant calling UX, it often does so by moving the setting, renaming it, limiting it to certain devices, or disabling it for specific regions. So a missing button in the Google Home app can mean any of these: renamed feature, delayed rollout, device limitation, or a hard deprecation on your model.

First checks: confirm you’re looking for the right feature

Before you assume it’s removed, confirm the feature isn’t simply relocated under a different label. Google Home calling features may appear as Calling, Call and text, Communication, or be tied to a particular device type like a Nest display.

Try these quick checks:

  • Open Google Home and tap your profile icon (top right) or Settings, then search for calling, communication, messages, or Assistant calling.
  • Open the device page for your speaker/display and look for communication-related toggles.
  • In Google Assistant, check whether you can still trigger a call flow with a voice command (availability depends on your setup).

Why the button is gone: the most common causes

The following causes explain most “Call Home disappeared” reports:

  • Feature rename/relocation: The function may still exist but under a different UI path.
  • App rollout timing: Google Home changes roll out gradually. Two phones on the same Wi‑Fi can show different options.
  • Account mismatch: You may be signed into the wrong Google account, or “personal results”/voice features may be off.
  • Region or language limitations: Some calling features only work in specific countries or languages.
  • Device capability: Certain models support calling and messaging; others only support intercom-style features like Drop In.
  • Permissions revoked: If microphone/contact permissions change, communication options can hide.

Verify requirements (accounts, permissions, and device compatibility)

Calling-related features depend on your Google account being configured and your Google Home setup meeting prerequisites.

Check the basics

  • Correct Google account: Confirm you’re signed into the same account used to set up the home.
  • Home membership: Make sure your phone is added to the correct home/household.
  • Device type: If you only have a basic speaker model, calling may be limited compared with displays or newer speakers.
  • Contacts access: If the feature requires contacts, ensure permissions are allowed.

Confirm app permissions on your phone

If Google Home can’t access what it needs, it may hide communication controls.

  • Android: Settings → Apps → Google Home → Permissions → enable Contacts and Microphone (names vary by Android skin).
  • iPhone/iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → enable relevant permissions for Google Home (Contacts, Microphone if prompted).

Re-enable calling in Google Home (if it’s still supported on your setup)

If calling features still exist for your region and device, you should be able to turn them back on—sometimes the toggle simply isn’t obvious after an update.

Android steps

  1. Open Google Home.
  2. Tap Settings (gear icon) or your profile, then find Assistant or Services.
  3. Look for a Communication or Calling entry.
  4. Enable the relevant option (for example, Call & message or Calling), then confirm any prompts.
  5. Open the device you expect to use and check for any communication-related toggles.

iPhone and iPad steps

  1. Open Google Home on iOS.
  2. Tap Settings or your profile.
  3. Go to Assistant or Communication (wording varies).
  4. Turn on Calling / Communication options if they appear.
  5. Check the specific speaker/display device page for any additional toggles.

Check Google Home Assistant calling settings

For many users, the “Call Home” UI is removed, but the underlying calling behavior is controlled by Assistant settings (account, recognition, and communication permissions).

Set up Voice Match and verify Assistant can recognize you

If Voice Match is off, some communication features won’t route correctly. On your phone:

  1. Open Google app or Google Home settings where Assistant preferences live.
  2. Find Assistant → Voice Match.
  3. Follow the prompts to train your voice.
  4. Confirm Personal results are enabled (if available).

Then test with a voice command that previously triggered calling behavior (exact phrasing can vary by language/region).

Update and reboot: fast ways to clear stale states

Feature UI changes are often accompanied by cached states and partial rollouts. A clean update and restart can bring back missing controls when the root cause is sync state.

Update the app and restart devices

  1. Update Google Home from the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
  2. Restart your phone.
  3. Restart your Google Home/Nest speaker or display (unplug power for ~10 seconds, then reconnect).
  4. Open Google Home and confirm the home and devices sync.

Clear app cache (Android) or reinstall (iOS)

If the option is missing only on one phone, cache corruption is a real cause.

Alternative ways to do the same thing without Call Home

Even when “Call Home” is removed, you may still be able to reach people using other Google Home communication features. Availability varies by device model and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Intercom or Drop In (if available on your speakers/displays)

If your original goal was “reach someone inside the house,” intercom-style features are often still present. In Google Home, open the device and look for Intercom or Drop In settings.

Use Duo/Meet-based calling via compatible Assistant features

Some calling functionality migrated into Assistant-supported calling flows connected to Google communication experiences. If you’re trying to call a family member, search your Google Home settings for any call entry that references calling your contacts or initiating communication.

Use a phone-call-capable Assistant routine (where supported)

In some setups, you can replicate “call from the speaker” behavior using routines that trigger Assistant actions. If supported, you’ll find routines in Google Home under Routines and then create a routine tied to a command or schedule.

Device and account limitations apply—this won’t work everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a smart speaker’s native calling features (varies by model)

Some Google/Nest devices historically supported specific calling features. If you upgraded hardware recently or changed your display/speaker mix, the visible calling options may change. Compare the options on each device page rather than assuming one universal setting exists.

If calling still doesn’t show up: troubleshooting matrix

Use this matrix when the UI remains missing after updates, permissions checks, and restarts.

Feature missing only on one phone

  • Verify you’re signed into the same Google account on both phones.
  • On the affected phone, clear cache (Android) or reinstall (iOS).
  • Check phone OS permissions for Contacts and Microphone.
  • Confirm the home selection inside Google Home points to the correct house.

Feature missing on all phones

  • Restart the speaker/display and force a resync.
  • Update Google Home on all devices and re-test.
  • Check whether your device model supports calling; use the device’s settings page to look for any communication capability toggles.
  • Confirm your country/region supports the calling feature. If your account’s region changed (travel/VPN/alternate accounts), the UI can disappear.

Google Home says calling is unavailable or disabled

  • Open Assistant/Communication settings and ensure toggles are enabled.
  • Check Voice Match and Personal results.
  • Re-link or re-authorize any service prompts if the app requests them.

Assistant can’t find the contacts you expect

  • Confirm contacts are stored with the expected names and phone numbers in your Google account.
  • Verify Contacts permission for Google Home.
  • Test by making a small change: add a new contact or update a contact’s phone format, then retry.

Security and privacy considerations after a feature change

When features change names or disappear, it’s smart to re-check the permissions and contact access you’ve granted. Communication features often depend on microphone access and contacts access, so you should confirm they still match what you want.

Also review household sharing: if you removed someone from your home or changed household members, calling/contact routing may change even if the UI doesn’t clearly explain why.

Common mistakes that make it look like Call Home is removed

  • Wrong home selected: Google Home can hold multiple homes/households. Check you’re viewing the correct one.
  • Wrong app version: If one device is still on an older Google Home build, UI paths can differ.
  • Using Voice Match with a different profile: If you trained voice on one phone/account and switched devices, recognition can fail.
  • Contacts permission revoked: The option can hide when Contacts access is blocked.
  • Assuming one device setting controls all devices: Some features are enabled per device page.

FAQs

Is Call Home permanently gone?

For some users and device/region combinations, it may be deprecated or replaced. For others, the feature still exists but appears under a different label or within a different settings path. Use the calling/communication search in Google Home and check the device-specific page to confirm.

Why do I still see calling options on someone else’s Google Home app?

Google Home changes roll out gradually and can vary by region, account eligibility, and device model. Two different app versions (or two different speaker/display models) can legitimately show different options.

What should I do if I only need calling to family members?

Check for the current communication/calling settings inside Google Home, enable the relevant toggles, confirm Voice Match, and verify Contacts permissions. If “Call Home” is not supported on your model, use Drop In/intercom for inside-the-house contact and the supported calling flow available for your setup.

Will I lose my devices or settings if I reinstall Google Home?

Usually you won’t lose the physical devices, because they stay tied to your Google account. But you may need to sign back in and re-confirm certain permissions. Reinstall is most effective when the issue is limited to one phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does this depend on iOS vs Android?

The underlying feature eligibility usually depends more on account and device compatibility than on iOS vs Android. But app UI differences and permission prompts can make it look like iOS users or Android users are affected differently.

Bottom Line

If the Google Home app has removed “Call Home,” it’s usually not random—it’s either a rename/relocation, a rollout eligibility change, or a device/region limitation. Start with account verification, permissions, and device-specific settings, then update and reboot before concluding the feature is permanently unavailable.

If calling isn’t supported on your setup anymore, focus on the closest alternatives your devices still support (Drop In/Intercom, and any current communication/calling options that appear under Google Home settings).
