Google is rolling out a text field redesign in Google Messages, adding a shortcuts bar inside the message composer. The goal is simple: fewer taps, faster access to the actions you use most, and a cleaner place to draft and send.
Because these changes typically roll out in waves, you may not see the update immediately—even if you’re on a recent version. This guide covers what’s changing, how to check whether you have it, and what to do when the shortcuts bar doesn’t appear or behaves oddly.

The headline change is the message composer (text field). Instead of a static input area, the UI introduces a shortcuts bar that lives alongside or above the typing field—depending on your screen size and the exact build Google is serving to you.

In practical terms, the redesign usually aims to:
- Make common actions faster by putting them one step closer to where you type.
- Reduce context switching (fewer jumps into menus).
- Improve the layout so the text field and attachment/send controls fit more consistently across Android skins.
You’ll typically still draft, attach, and send messages the same way—but with actions you use often becoming more direct.
Who will see the update (and when)
Rollouts like this are almost always staged. That means the same app version can behave differently on different devices during the testing window.
Expect differences based on:
- Google Messages version (you need a build new enough to include the UI changes).
- Server-side rollout flags (features can be enabled per account or device cohort).
- RCS capability on your carrier/device (some composer actions are more relevant under RCS).
- Screen size and Android UI scaling (the shortcuts bar may render differently for tablets or large fonts).
How to enable the shortcuts bar
If you want the new composer sooner, your job is to make sure you’re running a compatible version and that Google Messages is actually the app in charge of SMS/RCS conversations on your device.

Check for updates
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Messages.
- Tap Update if you see it.
- After updating, reopen Google Messages and check a chat thread.
If there’s no update button, you may already be on the newest version—or you may simply be queued for the server-side feature rollout.
Confirm you’re using Google Messages as your SMS app
- Open your phone Settings.
- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Tap Default apps.
- Choose SMS app (or Messaging app).
- Select Google Messages.
If another app is handling SMS, you won’t see Google’s composer UI there.
Join beta/testing (optional)
If you want the redesign early, consider the Google Messages beta program (availability varies by region). This can speed up access, but it can also introduce bugs.
- Open Google Play Store.
- Open the Google Messages app listing.
- Scroll to Join the beta or Become a tester.
- Install the beta update when prompted.
- Check the composer in a conversation.
How to use the new text field and shortcuts bar
Once the redesign is enabled, the shortcuts bar is meant to reduce friction while you’re already typing. The exact icons can vary by build, but the workflow pattern stays consistent.

Understanding the composer layout
On most phones, you’ll see three zones:
- Typing area: where your message text appears.
- Shortcuts bar: quick actions placed near the input field.
- Send and attachments: controls for sending and adding media (often still reachable from the same general control area).
If the shortcuts bar collapses after you start typing, it usually does so to preserve space for longer messages.
Common shortcuts you’ll likely see
Google tends to use a mix of universally useful actions. Depending on your carrier/RCS status and device, you may encounter shortcuts such as:
- Attach media (photo/video) or open the gallery picker
- Start a call or open contact actions (only when supported)
- Stickers/emoji actions to insert content without opening a separate panel
- Quick reply-style options or inline suggestions (more common under richer chat experiences)
If you don’t see a particular action you expect, verify you’re on the updated build and that the chat supports the related features (for example, certain RCS behaviors won’t show up in plain SMS-only conversations).
Fast sending and reduced taps
Try this workflow to feel the redesign:
- Open any existing conversation.
- Tap the text field once to focus.
- Use the shortcuts bar to add an attachment or insert content.
- Type your message.
- Tap Send and verify the attachment and text send together as expected.
Most users notice the time savings when attaching media or inserting content repeatedly in the same chat.

The redesigned composer is largely controlled by Google’s app UI and server-side rollout. However, you can still adjust a few settings that indirectly change how the composer behaves.
Conversation settings that affect the composer
Depending on your device, look for settings inside Google Messages such as:
- Chat features or Advanced options
- RCS settings (if you use RCS)
- Presence/verification controls (some actions differ based on whether chat features are active)
If shortcuts depend on RCS, flipping RCS settings back on can restore missing shortcuts.

Device-level settings that can change behavior
Android display settings can affect whether the shortcuts bar appears fully or collapses:
- Font size and display size (larger settings can force a compact layout)
- Accessibility toggles that change keyboard and input rendering
- Battery saver modes that restrict background UI updates
Troubleshooting when the redesign doesn’t show up
If you don’t see the shortcuts bar, don’t assume it’s broken. In most cases it’s one of three things: app version, default SMS app, or server-side rollout timing.
The new UI is missing
- Confirm you’re updated: Play Store > Google Messages > check for updates.
- Restart the app: fully close Google Messages, reopen it, and check a new and an old chat.
- Confirm SMS default: Settings > Default apps > SMS app > Google Messages.
- Try a different chat: open a thread with recent activity (shortcuts sometimes render based on chat type or state).
- Wait for rollout: if everything checks out, it may just be queued for your device.
If you want to verify you’re running a specific version, open Google Messages > tap your profile/menu > Settings and look for an app version line (UI can vary).
The shortcuts bar won’t respond
- Force stop the app: Settings > Apps > Google Messages > Force stop.
- Clear cache (not data): Storage > Clear cache.
- Reopen Google Messages and test the bar in a single conversation.
- If it persists, reboot the phone and try again.
A full “clear data” can remove local configuration and log you out of certain chat states—use it only if cache and restarts don’t help.
Text field is misaligned or cut off
This is often caused by display scaling, keyboard overlays, or an incompatible accessibility setting.
- Temporarily reduce Font size or Display size to a default level.
- Disable custom keyboard overlays (if you use a third-party keyboard) and test with the default keyboard.
- Turn off accessibility display magnification or screen magnifier, if enabled.
- Update both Google Messages and your keyboard app.
Animations or suggestions don’t load
Composer UI can depend on background network and feature flags. Try:
- Switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular
- Disabling VPN (if you use one)
- Turning battery optimization off for Google Messages: Settings > Apps > Google Messages > Battery > Unrestricted
Known gotchas and edge cases
Even well-tested UI rollouts can behave differently in a handful of scenarios.

Multi-SIM and default line behavior
On phones with multiple SIMs, the composer can render based on which line is active for a particular conversation. If you see inconsistent shortcuts between chats, confirm which SIM is being used and check default messaging settings.
Work profile or restricted devices
Managed profiles (work profiles) can restrict overlays, background access, or app permissions. If the shortcuts bar is missing only on a work-managed instance, check the policy restrictions.

Accessibility and large font scaling
When font size is pushed high, UI elements often compress. That can change whether the shortcuts bar is visible at the same time as attachments. Try reducing font size slightly and retesting.
RCS vs SMS differences
If your chat isn’t using RCS (for example, it’s falling back to SMS), some composer actions may be hidden or replaced. Verify RCS status inside Google Messages’ chat settings if available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing alternatives: Google Messages vs other SMS apps
The redesigned composer is part of why Google’s messaging app keeps competing with OEM SMS apps. Still, it’s worth knowing what you gain—and what you might miss—compared with other options.
What you gain with the redesigned composer
- Faster access to repeated actions due to the shortcuts bar being close to the typing field.
- Cleaner layouts across different Android form factors.
- Consistency with Google’s broader RCS chat experience.
Trade-offs versus legacy UI
- Staggered rollout confusion: not everyone sees the same UI at the same time.
- Reduced visible area if the shortcuts bar consumes space when typing on smaller screens.
- Temporary behavior changes after an app update, especially if your display scaling is customized.
If you prefer the older layout, there’s typically no built-in “revert UI” switch—waiting for the rollout or using the beta can be the only realistic paths.
FAQs
Will the shortcuts bar appear in every conversation?
Not always. UI rendering can vary by chat type (RCS vs SMS), conversation state, and device conditions. If you don’t see it in one thread, check another active conversation.

Why don’t I have the redesign even though my app is updated?
Most likely you’re waiting on a server-side rollout flag. Google Messages can include the code in a version but only enable the UI for certain device cohorts.
Can I force the redesign to show up?
There’s no guaranteed “force enable” switch. Your best options are updating Google Messages, ensuring it’s the default SMS app, trying the beta, and restarting after updates.
Will this change how attachments work?
Typically attachments still send the same way. The main change is where actions are located in the composer and how quickly you can reach them.
Is my message data safe if I clear cache?
Clearing cache usually doesn’t delete your messages, but clearing app data can affect local app state. If you need to do maintenance, start with cache and force stop before any data reset.
Final Thoughts
The Google Messages text field redesign with a shortcuts bar is a practical UI upgrade: it places common actions closer to where you type, reducing taps and making faster replies easier—especially for attachment-heavy conversations.
If you don’t see it yet, don’t panic. Update Google Messages, confirm it’s your default SMS app, and give the rollout a little time. When the feature does land, it should feel like a smoother composer rather than a brand-new messaging workflow.
