Samsung killed the stylus with Galaxy Fold, but it’s not gone forever

Samsung didn’t “kill” the stylus on Galaxy Fold devices so much as it changed the rules. The Galaxy Fold line never fully matched the built-in, always-ready stylus lifestyle that defined the Galaxy Note era, but it still supports S Pen use on most recent generations—via a specific pen and a case-based approach.

If you’re hearing that Samsung abandoned stylus support, it usually comes from one of two places: (1) confusion with the Note series ending, and (2) the Fold form factor not having the same integrated S Pen storage. Once you know the compatibility details, the experience is still very real.

What people mean by Samsung killing the stylus on Galaxy Fold

The most common complaint is that the Fold lineup stopped offering a Note-like “stylus first” experience. Galaxy Note devices typically had a built-in S Pen silo and a pen that felt like part of the phone hardware.

Galaxy Z Fold devices, by contrast, require a different setup—usually a dedicated S Pen model (often “Fold Edition”) and a compatible case/holder. That shift makes the stylus feel optional instead of automatic.

The real story: Samsung replaced a built-in Note workflow with a Fold workflow

Samsung ended the Galaxy Note line starting with the Note 20 generation, and it didn’t replace Note’s core value (pen-first productivity) with a single Fold feature toggle. Instead, Samsung leaned into a hybrid approach: pens still work, but the Fold’s design priorities pushed storage, ergonomics, and even the pen form factor into a different category.

The Fold’s internal display, hinges, and dust/water considerations also matter. Samsung has to keep thickness, durability, and serviceability in balance—so “always built-in” isn’t the same engineering target as it was on Note.

Where the S Pen experience stands on current Galaxy Z Fold models

On modern Galaxy Z Fold devices, Samsung continues to support S Pen functionality. However, it’s not “any stylus will do” and it’s not identical across pen types—so the right purchase matters more than it did on Note.

In practice, you can still write, annotate, take notes, and sketch on both the cover display and the inner screen (depending on app support), and Samsung’s software features are designed to recognize S Pen input.

S Pen compatibility: which pens work with which Galaxy Fold devices

Samsung doesn’t treat stylus support as a single checkbox across the entire S Pen lineup. Fold devices are picky: the pen model and what you’re attaching to the phone (case/holder) can determine whether you get full detection, hover behaviors, and pressure/recognition accuracy.

Pen Best for Typical fit with Galaxy Z Fold What you should know
S Pen Fold Edition Classic writing/notes on Fold Designed specifically for Galaxy Z Fold cases Pick this when you want the most “Fold-native” feel and detection.
S Pen Pro Pen input + Bluetooth air actions May work on Fold depending on model generation support Bluetooth features (air actions) depend on pairing and firmware.
Older S Pens from Galaxy Note Trying to reuse what you already own Compatibility is inconsistent across generations Some Note-era pens may detect but won’t replicate the same experience.
Generic third-party styluses Convenience drawing Often unreliable on Fold Fold digitizers typically require an EMR-active stylus for best results.

S Pen Fold Edition vs S Pen Pro vs other pens (what to buy)

If your goal is “I want Note-style writing on a Fold,” start with S Pen Fold Edition. If you specifically want remote shutter, slideshow controls, or other Bluetooth air actions, then consider S Pen Pro—assuming your Fold generation supports its feature set.

For anything else, don’t gamble. Stylus compatibility on Fold is one of those areas where “it kind of works” can still feel frustrating because handwriting recognition, palm rejection, and hover/edge behaviors degrade.

How to use an S Pen on Galaxy Z Fold (setup and daily controls)

Once you have a compatible pen, the setup is straightforward. The real win is configuring your apps (Samsung Notes and handwriting workflows) so you don’t fight the interface every day.

  • Compatible Devices: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Z Fold 4
  • Work smarter with the S Pen Fold Edition and turn your scribbles into strokes of genius

Enable S Pen features in Settings

  1. Open Settings on your Galaxy Z Fold.
  2. Go to Advanced features.
  3. Look for S Pen (or a stylus-related menu), then enable relevant options such as:
    • Air actions (if your pen supports it)
    • Floating messages or note shortcuts (names vary by One UI version)
    • Screen write / quick note features (if available)

If you don’t see an S Pen menu, it often means the device isn’t recognizing the pen type correctly, the pen isn’t fully supported for your Fold model, or you’re missing the right case/holder.

Use Samsung Notes and handwriting on the cover and inner display

Samsung Notes is the most consistent experience for stylus handwriting on Fold because it’s built to interpret pen input and manage multi-page layouts.

  1. Open Samsung Notes.
  2. Create a new note and choose Pen mode.
  3. Write on the inner display for larger strokes and spacing.
  4. For cover-screen use, keep a shorter note format so page zoom doesn’t fight your handwriting scale.

If you use OneNote or PDF markup, test your handwriting on both displays. Some workflows behave differently when apps don’t support pen-specific intent the way Samsung Notes does.

Gestures, palm rejection, and hover behaviors

Galaxy Fold digitizers handle palm rejection and hover, but the feel depends on screen protector choice and pen type. To get the best behavior:

  • Use Samsung-recommended screen protectors when possible.
  • Avoid mismatched third-party films that change surface friction.
  • Keep your pen tip clean; worn tips can reduce tracking accuracy.

What changes when you unfold: apps, accuracy, and latency

The Fold’s inner display is the “big canvas,” but the transition between folded and unfolded states can affect app layout, zoom level, and stylus targeting. That’s normal: the phone changes how it renders the canvas space.

For writing-heavy work, expect the best consistency when your note or drawing app maintains a stable zoom scale. If you’re seeing “missed” touches, it’s usually because the app UI resized when you unfolded.

Common problems and troubleshooting

If stylus input doesn’t feel right, don’t start by changing apps. Start by isolating hardware recognition, then software settings, then screen protection.

Stylus not detected

  1. Remove and re-seat the pen if your case uses a holder.
  2. Reboot the phone once (fastest reset for recognition layers).
  3. Confirm you’re using a compatible pen model for your Fold generation.
  4. Update Samsung One UI software to the latest available patch level.

If detection still fails, the pen may be the wrong variant. With Fold devices, “stylus that works on phones” doesn’t automatically mean “stylus that works on Fold digitizers.”

Writing feels delayed or inaccurate

  1. Check for a screen protector mismatch. Even good films can interfere with fine tracking.
  2. Test in Samsung Notes only, then test in another app (PDF markup, OneNote) to pinpoint the layer.
  3. Inspect the pen tip. Replace it if the tip looks rounded or worn.

Surface issues are the #1 cause of “my handwriting looks off” on Fold after buying a new protector or case.

Palm rejection fails

  1. In Samsung Notes or your drawing app, look for palm rejection or handwriting mode settings.
  2. In Settings, confirm stylus/palm settings (names vary by One UI version).
  3. Try writing without gloves and with a clean screen.

If palm rejection fails immediately after installing a new protector, revert to a known-compatible film.

Handwriting recognition is wrong

Handwriting recognition depends on language configuration and input style. Fix it by:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify note language settings inside Samsung Notes.
  2. Use consistent stroke size (very small handwriting is harder to classify).
  3. Turn off any aggressive beautify modes if you see shape distortion.

Recognition quality can also vary with pen model and tip condition—if the tip is too worn, the phone sees “fuzzy” characters.

Case or screen protector issues

Fold cases are more than “where the phone sits.” Some cases include the pen holder, and pen alignment can influence detection stability.

  • Use a compatible Fold S Pen case or holder designed for your Fold model.
  • Install the screen protector carefully—bubbles and edge lifting can cause tracking glitches.

Alternatives if you want Note-like writing on a Fold

If you’re frustrated that Fold can’t replicate “pen is always there,” choose the alternative that matches your workflow: plain handwriting, pen shortcuts, or full annotation.

Use the S Pen Fold Edition plus Samsung Notes (most direct path)

This is the closest thing to a Note experience on a Fold without forcing unsupported hardware. You get reliable pen input and Samsung’s handwriting-to-text features in a workflow built for notes.

For best results, treat your inner display as your primary writing surface and keep cover notes short and structured.

Use S Pen Pro for Bluetooth air actions

If your productivity depends on remote actions—like controlling slides or using air gestures—S Pen Pro is the more feature-forward option. It’s especially useful for presentations and quick media controls.

Just verify Bluetooth features with your specific Fold generation and One UI version, and expect setup steps to include pairing depending on the pen’s model.

Use a third-party EMR stylus (only if it’s explicitly compatible)

Some EMR-compatible third-party pens can work for writing, but they won’t always match Samsung’s detection behavior, hover characteristics, or tip quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you go this route, buy from a seller with easy returns, then test in Samsung Notes for handwriting and palm rejection before committing.

Use handwriting via apps even without the stylus (worst-case option)

If you’re in a situation where you don’t have the right pen, you can still write with your finger and rely on handwriting recognition in some apps. It’s not the same precision, but it can get you through meetings and quick forms.

For serious sketching, diagrams, or annotations, though, the stylus is the difference between “usable” and “comfortable.”

Why Samsung likely won’t bring back a Note-style built-in silo to every Fold

The Note silo was convenient, but it forced a thicker, dedicated storage design. Fold’s core value is the folding form factor—so every extra cavity and millimeter has to justify itself against durability and portability.

Samsung also has to maintain hinge reliability and protect the display stack. A built-in silo across every Fold variant is a tougher design constraint than a case-compatible pen workflow.

In other words: it’s not that Samsung can’t support styluses—it’s that it’s choosing a pen experience that matches Fold’s engineering priorities, not Note’s.

FAQs

Can I use any S Pen on my Galaxy Z Fold?

No. Fold devices are sensitive to the exact pen model. To get the best experience, use S Pen Fold Edition for your Fold generation, or confirm S Pen Pro support if you want Bluetooth features.

Will Samsung Notes work on the inner display for handwriting?

Yes. Samsung Notes is designed for pen input and handwriting workflows on both displays, with the inner screen usually giving the most natural spacing for longer writing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my stylus work on one app but not another?

Some apps treat pen input like touch, while others implement pen-specific behaviors (pressure, intent, handwriting conversion). Test in Samsung Notes first, then move to annotation tools once you confirm the pen is recognized correctly.

Do I need a screen protector for the best stylus experience?

Not strictly, but it strongly affects feel and tracking. If you add a protector, make sure it’s compatible and installed smoothly—bad films are a common cause of inaccurate writing.

Bottom Line

Samsung didn’t remove stylus support from Galaxy Fold—it changed how stylus support is delivered. With the right compatible S Pen (often S Pen Fold Edition) and a compatible holder/case, you still get a strong pen-and-notes workflow on both screens.

If your expectation is “Note, but folded,” you’ll be disappointed. If your expectation is “a Fold that can write like a tablet when you bring the right pen,” then the stylus isn’t gone—it’s just not automatic anymore.
