Google Messages rolling out gallery redesign with HD+ quality

Google is rolling out a gallery redesign in Messages and pairing it with HD+ quality for supported media. If you’ve noticed smoother browsing, updated thumbnails, or clearer media delivery, you’re likely seeing the same phased update.

Because rollouts are staged, you may not get the new UI and HD+ features at the same time as other people. This guide shows you how to verify what you have, what changed, and what to do when HD+ or the redesigned gallery doesn’t appear.

What the Google Messages gallery redesign includes

The gallery redesign focuses on how you view media inside a conversation—especially images you’ve sent and received. Expect changes to thumbnail behavior, browsing speed, and how quickly you can preview and open attachments.

Rollouts typically roll in UI updates first, then performance and quality improvements. HD+ quality may also depend on factors like network conditions and how your conversation is provisioned (RCS vs fallback messaging).

What HD+ quality means in practice

HD+ is Google’s higher-quality media mode intended to preserve more detail than standard delivery. The practical impact is usually clearer images and more usable previews, especially when you open gallery items from within the chat.

Quality can still vary. In real-world conditions, delivery quality depends on the sending app settings, the chat’s messaging type, recipient capabilities, and whether the network supports the higher-size payloads without fallback.

Prerequisites and rollout reality checks

Before you troubleshoot, confirm the basics. Google’s phased deployment can be influenced by device model, Android version, carrier, and server-side feature flags.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Device: Android phone running a reasonably recent OS (Google doesn’t publish an exact cutoff for each rollout; many features target newer Android builds).
  • App: Update Google Messages from the Google Play Store.
  • Chat type: HD+ behavior is typically tied to RCS messaging. Legacy SMS/MMS can’t deliver the same “HD+” experience.
  • Network: Unstable mobile data or restrictive Wi‑Fi can trigger lower-quality delivery.
  • Rollout status: Features may be server-side and not appear even after updating.

How to check whether you have the redesign

There’s no single public toggle that guarantees the new gallery. The most reliable method is to update the app and then verify behavior inside a chat.

Check your Messages version

Open Google Messages > tap your profile/avatar or More (three dots) > Settings > look for About or the version number. Then compare that to what you see on the Play Store listing.

Look for the gallery UI changes in a conversation

Open any chat that includes photos. Scroll to the media/gallery row or attachment strip and tap it. The redesign typically shows faster thumbnail loading and updated browsing/preview behavior.

Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

If the gallery behaves exactly like older versions—same layout, same preview flow—you probably haven’t received the feature flag yet.

How to ensure HD+ quality is enabled

HD+ isn’t always a simple on/off switch. In many cases, you need RCS enabled and the feature must be available for your account/device.

1) Enable RCS (Chat features)

Open Google Messages > tap Settings > select your SIM/account if prompted > find Chat features (sometimes labeled RCS chats).

  1. Toggle Enable chat features (or equivalent) to ON.
  2. Wait for registration to complete (it may take a few minutes).
  3. Confirm status shows as connected/active (wording varies by build).

If RCS isn’t active, you’re more likely to receive standard-quality delivery rather than HD+.

2) Use Wi‑Fi or a stable connection for larger media

When networks are constrained, apps sometimes choose safer payload sizes. For best results, send HD+ content on reliable Wi‑Fi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect to Wi‑Fi or switch to a stronger mobile signal.
  2. Send a test image and re-open it from the gallery.

3) Verify both ends can support higher-quality delivery

Even with HD+ enabled on your side, the recipient may not support the same quality mode or may be on a messaging pathway that forces fallback.

  1. Test with a contact known to be on Google Messages with RCS enabled.
  2. If the same file arrives lower quality, the limiting factor is likely on delivery or recipient capability.

What to expect in the new gallery experience

The redesigned gallery tends to make it easier to find the media you want without jumping back to the conversation timeline.

Faster thumbnail browsing

Most users notice quicker scrolling and fewer “blank thumbnail” moments when they open gallery view.

Better preview behavior

When HD+ is available, previews opened from the gallery usually look sharper, with fewer compression artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More consistent open-and-close flow

UI changes often reduce the number of taps it takes to return to the conversation after previewing media.

Common issues and troubleshooting

If you updated Messages and still don’t see the redesign or HD+ quality, don’t assume it’s broken. It’s often a feature-flag, RCS status, or caching issue.

Problem: I don’t see the redesign

Try the following before concluding you’re stuck on an older build. Feature rollouts are phased and can take time.

  1. Confirm app update: Open Google Play Store > search Google Messages > confirm you’re on the latest available version.
  2. Restart Messages: Close the app fully from the recent apps switcher and reopen.
  3. Wait for server-side enablement: Some UI flags enable days after a version update.
  4. Clear cache (not data): Android settings > Apps > Messages > Storage > Clear cache.
  5. Reboot the phone: A simple restart can help after major app updates.

Problem: HD+ doesn’t show up

HD+ visibility can depend on chat type and account provisioning. Start by checking RCS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check Chat features status: Messages > Settings > Chat features > ensure it’s enabled and connected.
  2. Confirm the recipient is also on RCS: Send a test and compare how the file is labeled/handled.
  3. Try again on Wi‑Fi: HD+ often needs a reliable connection to avoid fallback.
  4. Update Google Play services: Some RCS components rely on updated system services.

Problem: Media looks blurry or downgraded

Blurry results usually mean the message delivered via fallback or compression rather than HD+.

  1. Verify you’re in RCS mode: If the chat is falling back to SMS/MMS, you’ll see lower-quality media.
  2. Recheck recipient capability: If the contact is on a non-RCS path, your sends may arrive compressed.
  3. Check network congestion: Re-send on Wi‑Fi or during better signal.
  4. Avoid re-uploads from compressed sources: If you send a heavily compressed image from another app, HD+ can’t restore detail that’s already been lost.

Problem: Gallery thumbnails are missing or slow

This can happen after app updates, data restrictions, or storage pressure.

  1. Grant storage/data access if prompted: Some Android versions require permissions for media indexing.
  2. Turn off battery optimization for Messages: Android Settings > Battery > Battery optimization > Messages > set to Unrestricted (wording varies).
  3. Clear cache: Messages > Storage > Clear cache.
  4. Check device storage: If storage is low, media thumbnails may not cache properly.

Comparisons and alternatives

It helps to understand what changes are specific to Google Messages versus what’s limited by the underlying messaging pathway.

RCS vs MMS/legacy SMS

RCS typically supports richer formatting and better delivery behavior for media. SMS/MMS is more constrained and often forces smaller sizes and heavier compression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • RCS: More consistent with HD-quality experiences and modern gallery behavior.
  • MMS/SMS: More likely to downgrade or compress attachments.

Media apps and file sharing options

If you need predictable high-resolution delivery, consider sharing files with a dedicated method rather than relying on chat media compression rules.

  • Send as a file: Some Android share flows allow sending the original file rather than a preview image.
  • Cloud links: For very large files, link-based sharing avoids chat attachment limits.

Privacy and storage considerations

Gallery redesigns usually change how media is cached and indexed locally. That can affect storage usage and what’s retained for quick browsing.

  • Storage: High-quality thumbnails and preview caches can use more space than older versions.
  • Data usage: Loading HD+ previews can consume data on mobile networks.
  • Deletion behavior: Clearing chat history or disabling chat media settings (if present) can change what remains cached.

If you’re low on storage, clearing app cache (not necessarily data) is a safe first step, then reassess any media-heavy chats.

FAQ

Will HD+ work for all images and videos?

Not always. HD+ availability can depend on the file type, size, the chat’s RCS status, and recipient capability. Smaller images on stable connections are the most consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does one contact get HD+ and another doesn’t?

That usually means the chats aren’t using the same delivery pathway. If one conversation falls back to MMS/SMS or the recipient device/app doesn’t support the same quality mode, the result can differ.

Can I force the redesign or HD+ on my device?

Some aspects are controllable (updating the app, enabling Chat features, using stable Wi‑Fi), but the final enablement is commonly server-side. There’s no guaranteed universal toggle for everyone.

What should I do after updating Messages if features still look unchanged?

Restart the app, then clear cache for Messages. If nothing changes, wait for the server-side flag to reach your account, which can take days.

Does this affect group chats?

It can. If HD+ depends on RCS and recipient support, group chats with mixed capabilities may deliver media differently to different members.

Bottom Line

The Google Messages gallery redesign and HD+ quality are meant to make photo and media browsing faster and sharper inside conversations. If you don’t see it yet, you’re usually looking at rollout timing, RCS status, or network constraints—not a permanent issue.

Update Messages, confirm Chat features are connected, test on stable Wi‑Fi, and use the troubleshooting steps above when quality or the gallery UI doesn’t behave as expected.
