Google Photos sync issue doesn’t show new photos and videos

If Google Photos isn’t showing your newest photos and videos, it’s usually not a mystery bug—it’s a sync pipeline issue. The app can be taking pictures fine, but uploads may be blocked by settings, permissions, network, battery limits, storage constraints, or file-location rules.

This guide walks through a reliable, step-by-step checklist for Android, iPhone, iPad, and the web. You’ll also find common edge cases (SD cards, shared libraries, HEVC, and “paused” backup) that specifically cause the exact symptom: new items never appear in Google Photos.

Use the sections in order. Start with the quick triage, then move to your device checklist, and finish with the account-side checks if nothing changes after a restart and re-upload attempt.

How Google Photos sync is supposed to work

Google Photos “sync” is really Backup: your device copies new media from the camera roll (and supported folders) to your Google Account.

On most devices, backup runs in the background under these conditions: the app has permission to access media, backup isn’t paused, the device is online (often Wi‑Fi for large files), and Google Photos isn’t restricted by battery or data saver rules.

Quick triage (fix in minutes)

Before changing settings, do these fast checks—most fixes come from one of them.

  1. Confirm the media exists on your device (open your phone’s Photos/Gallery app and find the newest photo/video).
  2. Open Google Photos and tap Profile picture > Photos settings (Android) or Settings (iOS) to check Backup status.
  3. Check your network: switch from mobile data to Wi‑Fi (or vice versa) and make sure you have internet access.
  4. Force a sync attempt: in Google Photos, go to the backup status screen and look for Retry or Resume.

If you see any error message (for example, “Backup paused,” “Waiting for Wi‑Fi,” or “Not enough storage”), jump to the matching section below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the two most common settings

These settings cause the majority of “new photos/videos won’t show up” cases.

1) Backup status: not paused

In Google Photos, open Settings and find Backup. If it’s paused, turn it back on and wait for it to scan your library.

2) Backup quality and metered limits

When backup is set to a quality mode that requires Wi‑Fi or when data saver is enabled, new uploads can sit in a queue.

On Android, look for settings like Backup on Wi‑Fi only or data restrictions. On iPhone/iPad, check whether Background App Refresh is off (it can delay uploads).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android troubleshooting checklist

Start here if you use a Samsung Galaxy, Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, or any Android device.

Verify Backup is enabled and working

Open Google Photos > tap your Profile picture > Photos settings > Backup.

  1. Confirm Backup is turned On.
  2. Check the status message for Last backup time.
  3. If you see Pausing or Paused, turn it off and back on.

Confirm the correct Google Account

It’s common to have multiple accounts (work + personal). Make sure Google Photos is backing up to the same account you’re viewing in the app.

  1. In Google Photos, tap Profile picture and check the account name/email.
  2. On the web (photos.google.com), open the same account and confirm you’re in the right library.

Check device storage and free space

Low free space can prevent uploads and can also interrupt background processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Free space on the phone (aim for at least a few hundred MB minimum; more is better for video uploads).
  2. Restart the device.

Battery optimization and background restrictions

Android’s power management can stop background upload scanning.

  1. Go to Settings > Battery (or Battery and device care on Samsung).
  2. Find Battery optimization or App power management.
  3. Search for Google Photos.
  4. Set it to Unrestricted (wording varies by brand).

Data saver / background data

If Data Saver is enabled, Google Photos may avoid uploads on mobile data.

  1. Check Settings > Network & Internet > Data usage.
  2. Look for Data Saver and disable it temporarily.
  3. Try uploading again on Wi‑Fi after toggling.

SD cards and “where photos are stored”

Some Android devices keep camera footage on an SD card. Google Photos Backup may not include every SD folder depending on permissions and device behavior.

  1. Move one test video from SD card to Internal storage (Camera folder) using the file manager.
  2. Open Google Photos and check if it uploads shortly after.
  3. If the test works, you’ve found the storage-location cause.

Clear cache (not data) for Google Photos

Cache issues can stop the app from scanning for new files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Photos.
  2. Tap Storage > Clear cache.
  3. Open Google Photos and verify Backup status.

iPhone and iPad troubleshooting checklist

If you use an iPhone or iPad, focus on permissions, Background App Refresh, and iOS upload conditions.

Check Backup status in the Google Photos app

Open Google Photos > tap your Profile picture > Photos settings > Backup.

  1. Confirm Backup is On.
  2. Check whether it says Paused, Waiting for Wi‑Fi, or shows an upload error.

Verify Photos permission (required for scanning new media)

iOS blocks new uploads if Google Photos doesn’t have permission to read your Photos library.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos.
  2. Find Google Photos.
  3. Select All Photos (or the strongest option available).

Enable Background App Refresh

If Background App Refresh is off, Google Photos may not upload until you open the app or the device decides to run background tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  2. Turn it On (or ensure Google Photos is allowed).

Check Low Power Mode and Cellular settings

When Low Power Mode is enabled, iOS can delay background uploads. Also, cellular rules can prevent uploads depending on your settings.

  1. Disable Low Power Mode (Settings > Battery).
  2. Ensure Google Photos is allowed on cellular if you need it (Settings > Cellular > Google Photos).

Update iOS and the Google Photos app

Upload bugs are sometimes fixed in app updates. Use your device’s app store to update Google Photos, then try again on Wi‑Fi.

  1. Update Google Photos from the App Store.
  2. Update iOS if you’re on an older version with known background/upload issues.

Web and account-side checks

Sometimes photos are uploading, but you’re looking at the wrong place or the web library hasn’t refreshed yet.

Confirm you’re viewing the same account

On a browser, open https://photos.google.com and sign in with the same Google account shown in the Google Photos app on your phone.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for “Pending” or recent uploads

Recent uploads can take time—especially for 4K video. Refresh and give it a few minutes after forcing a sync.

Check if Backup is actually uploading

On your phone, return to the Backup status screen and verify it’s not showing errors like “Can’t upload” or “Backup paused.” Web won’t fix a phone-side block.

Shared libraries and family sharing confusion

If you use Google Photos sharing features, you may be looking at a Shared Library instead of your personal library (or vice versa). Ensure you’re viewing the correct library view.

Edge cases that stop new uploads

These are the less obvious reasons your newest photos/videos don’t show up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Videos shot with unusual codecs or high bitrate

Some devices produce videos in formats that take longer to process before upload. If you see only videos missing (photos appear), try a shorter clip as a test.

  1. Take a short test video (10–20 seconds).
  2. Wait on Wi‑Fi with the screen off for 10–20 minutes.
  3. Check Google Photos again.

Slow scanning after large bursts

After bursts (events, trips, 500+ shots), backup may pause scanning until the queue catches up.

  • If the backup status shows “Processing” or “Preparing,” it’s working—give it time.
  • Switching Wi‑Fi and keeping the app open briefly can help it catch up.

Media stored in folders Google Photos doesn’t watch

Google Photos commonly watches the Camera folder and certain gallery areas. Some apps (WhatsApp, downloaded images, screenshots) have different backup behavior.

Private files or locked albums

Some phones store “locked folder”/“secure folder” photos separately. Google Photos may not access them depending on your device’s security model and how the files are exposed to the Photos picker.

Incorrect device date/time

Usually rare, but wrong date/time can interfere with the ordering and detection logic.

  1. Set date/time to Automatic.
  2. Wait for Google Photos to rescan.

What to do if uploads are stuck or delayed

If Google Photos shows backup running but nothing new appears, treat it like a stuck queue.

Android: force a rescan with toggles

  1. In Google Photos, go to Backup.
  2. Turn Backup Off.
  3. Wait 10 seconds, then turn it On.
  4. Connect to Wi‑Fi and keep the phone awake for 2–5 minutes.

iPhone/iPad: app restart + Wi‑Fi

  1. Restart the Google Photos app (close it fully, then reopen).
  2. Connect to Wi‑Fi.
  3. Leave the phone on the charger for 15–30 minutes.

Reboot the device

A restart clears stuck background tasks and reinitializes scanning. It’s boring, but it works often enough to earn a spot in a real troubleshooting playbook.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear cache (Android) or reinstall (last resort)

Clear cache usually fixes sync issues without data loss. If it still fails, reinstalling can refresh internal state—just be aware it won’t delete already backed-up media.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Storage, quality, and format gotchas

If your account storage is full or near full, uploads may stop mid-stream.

Check Google Account storage

Open Google One / storage settings and check how much is left. When you’re out of space, backup often pauses until you free space or upgrade.

Quality settings can change what counts as “new”

Switching quality can lead to confusing behavior because previously uploaded items don’t re-upload. You may think it “forgot,” but it’s actually finishing older uploads or leaving completed ones alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HEIC/HEVC issues

Newer iPhone and iPad video/photo formats can take longer to process, especially for HEVC. Make sure you give the device time on Wi‑Fi and power.

Permissions and device restrictions

Google Photos can only upload what it can read. Permission issues are particularly common after OS updates.

Android permissions

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Photos.
  2. Tap Permissions.
  3. Ensure access to Photos and videos (wording varies).

iOS permissions

As noted above, verify Google Photos has All Photos access in Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos.

VPN, proxy, and restricted networks

Some networks block Google upload endpoints or throttle background traffic. If you’re on work Wi‑Fi or a restrictive hotspot, try a different network (hotspot from another phone) to test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting flow (when the main method fails)

Use this decision flow if you’ve tried the quick triage and still see missing new items.

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Photos show up, videos don’t Video processing/large uploads stuck Leave on Wi‑Fi + charger; test a short 10–20 second clip; check backup status for “Processing”
New items never appear Backup paused/off or wrong account Confirm Backup is On; toggle Off/On; verify account in app and on photos.google.com
Only items from certain folders missing Unsupported location or SD card behavior Move one test file to Camera/Internal storage and retest
Works on Wi‑Fi, not on cellular Wi‑Fi-only upload or cellular restrictions Allow cellular for Google Photos (iOS) or disable data saver / metered limits (Android)
Everything stops after a while Storage full or background restrictions Check Google storage; disable battery optimization for Google Photos; restart device

Common mistakes that keep photos from syncing

  • Viewing the wrong account: you switched Google accounts on the phone or web and kept the old library open.
  • Assuming “sync” means instant: Google Photos queues uploads and may delay for Wi‑Fi, power, and processing.
  • Leaving Data Saver on (Android) or blocking background refresh (iOS).
  • Ignoring OS update permission changes: after iOS/iPadOS upgrades, Photos access can be reset.
  • Trying to upload while storage is full: backup pauses and won’t resume until there’s space.

Bottom Line

If Google Photos sync isn’t showing new photos and videos, the fastest route is to confirm Backup is On, verify the correct Google Account, then eliminate device restrictions (battery/data saver on Android, Photos permissions + Background App Refresh on iPhone/iPad). Those checks cover the overwhelming majority of real-world cases.

If you still don’t see uploads after toggling Backup and retrying on Wi‑Fi while the device is charging, use the troubleshooting flow table: it will point you toward whether you’re dealing with video processing, storage full, unsupported folders, or a network restriction.

FAQs

Why do my newest photos not appear in Google Photos right away?

Backup can queue uploads while your phone scans and processes media. Large videos also require processing time and may wait for Wi‑Fi and power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I wait after turning Backup back on?

On a normal library, expect a few minutes to start uploading. For large recent bursts, it can take tens of minutes. If nothing changes after 30–60 minutes on Wi‑Fi + charger, move to the permission and restrictions checks.

What if only one app’s media (like screenshots) isn’t uploading?

That usually means the files aren’t in the folders Google Photos backs up on your device, or your Google Photos settings exclude that category. Test by saving a photo to the Camera folder and see if it uploads.

Will reinstalling Google Photos on my phone delete my uploads?

No. Reinstalling removes the app from the device, but it doesn’t delete already backed-up media from your Google Account.

My account storage is full—can I still fix the sync issue?

Yes, but you need space first. Free up Google storage (or upgrade), then return to Google Photos Backup and let it resume.
