SMS/MMS goes through your carrier and offers fewer interactive features. If RCS is unavailable for a conversation, Messages may use SMS/MMS instead. The key privacy distinction: eligible personal RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted; SMS/MMS is not.
RCS vs. SMS/MMS at a glance

| Who can use it | Everyone in the conversation needs RCS support and activation. Availability varies by carrier and region. | Can be used when RCS is unavailable or not being used, subject to carrier service. |
| End-to-end encryption | Available for eligible personal chats between Google Messages users with RCS enabled. Not all RCS conversations qualify. | Not end-to-end encrypted. |
| What the app shows | The compose field indicates “RCS message.” An active end-to-end encrypted conversation also shows a lock icon. | The compose field indicates “Text message”; the app may show SMS or MMS below the send icon. |

What RCS adds to a conversation
RCS is the richer messaging option in Google Messages. Depending on support at both ends, you can see when someone is typing, see when a message has been read, and share files or high-resolution photos. RCS messages can travel over mobile data or Wi-Fi, rather than relying on the carrier’s SMS/MMS delivery path.

Why a message may send as SMS or MMS
Google Messages checks whether a contact—or, in a group, all participants—can use RCS. If RCS is unavailable or not enabled for the conversation, the app may send using SMS/MMS instead. That fallback changes the delivery method and the features available; it does not make SMS/MMS end-to-end encrypted.
To check the mode before sending, look at the compose field: it says “RCS message” or “Text message.” Google Messages may also label SMS or MMS below the send icon. You can inspect RCS status in the app’s settings under RCS chats; Google’s setup instructions cover where to find the setting.

If an RCS message has not been delivered, Google Messages may offer a way to switch that message to SMS/MMS. The exact option is part of the message’s delivery controls; see Google’s instructions for controlling message delivery. Switching can help when RCS delivery is unsuccessful, but it changes the message to a carrier-delivered format and removes RCS-only capabilities.

Google says eligible personal RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted when both people use Google Messages and have RCS enabled. Look for the lock icon on the send button and next to the message timestamp to confirm that encryption is active. If the conversation is no longer eligible for RCS, messages sent or received in that state cannot use this end-to-end encryption.

SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. Nor are all RCS chats: Google says RCS conversations with iPhone users in Google Messages are not end-to-end encrypted, and RCS business chats are not either. So “RCS” alone is not proof that a message has end-to-end encryption; check the conversation’s lock indicator and account for who you are messaging.
When end-to-end encryption is not available, Google says RCS chats on its infrastructure use Transport Layer Security (TLS) between the user and Google. TLS protects messages in transit on that leg, but it is not the same as end-to-end encryption. Google also says its infrastructure may temporarily queue RCS messages for delivery. See Google’s description of RCS security and routing for details.

RCS with iPhone users and business chats
Android-to-iPhone messaging
Google says RCS can connect Android and iPhone users where the feature is available, but support depends on region and carrier. Cross-platform RCS availability does not mean a chat is end-to-end encrypted in Google Messages. Google’s RCS FAQ states that RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted.

RCS business messages
Businesses can use RCS for branded identities, media, and interactive actions such as buttons for support or order tracking. A verified checkmark can help identify a business, but it does not indicate end-to-end encryption. Google says business RCS chats are managed by businesses, messaging providers, and carriers, and are not end-to-end encrypted. Details are in Google’s RCS business chat help.
