Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Instead of scanning a QR code, eligible users sign in at messages.google.com/web/ and confirm the connection on their Android phone by matching a character or emoji-like choice. QR pairing still existed for some users during that rollout, so this was a transition—not proof that QR codes were universally removed.
What “Device pairing” means
Device pairing authorizes another device or browser to use Messages for web through the Messages setup on your Android phone. It does not turn SMS into a general cloud-messaging service, and the December 2023 report does not establish how messages are stored, encrypted in the browser, or retained in a Google Account.

The rollout was reported by 9to5Google on December 18, 2023, after the feature began reaching stable users around that week. Availability, labels and eligibility may differ by Messages version, account, device and rollout status; that report does not verify universal availability in 2026.

| Method | How authorization starts | What happens on the phone | Rollout status reported in December 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR code | Open Messages for web and scan its QR code with Messages. | The scan links the browser to the phone. | Still available in the tested experience. |
| Google Account “Device pairing” | Sign in to Messages for web with the Google Account used by Messages on the phone. | Confirm the request and match one of three displayed characters or emoji-like choices. | Rolling out as the newer account-based flow. |
The account flow avoids positioning a phone camera over a QR code and makes the phone-side authorization step explicit. It can also be easier on a computer or tablet with an inconvenient camera, but it introduces a common source of confusion: choosing the wrong Google Account in a browser with several signed-in profiles.

How to try Device pairing
- Open Google Messages on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile image in the top-right corner.
- Look for Device pairing. The exact wording or location can vary by app version and rollout.
- On the computer, open https://messages.google.com/web/.
- Continue through the Google Account prompt, selecting the account associated with the intended Messages setup.
- Keep Messages available on the phone. The reported flow displayed a sheet such as “Trying to pair another device?” and showed three character choices.
- Select the character or emoji-like choice on the phone that matches the one shown in the browser.
The browser may first show wording such as “Message on your other devices”. These labels describe the December 2023 flow and are not a guarantee that every current build uses identical text.
Are QR codes gone?
Not necessarily. During the reported rollout, the QR-code interface remained available alongside the account-based experience. The most accurate description is that Google was moving Messages for web toward Google Account pairing while both methods could coexist. A QR option may therefore still be the practical fallback on a device that has not received the newer flow.

What the web interface looked like
In the account-pairing experience described by 9to5Google, controls such as Archived, Spam & blocked, Settings and Unpair moved into a navigation drawer. The older QR experience placed those controls in an overflow menu. A different layout usually indicates a different interface version or rollout state, not necessarily a failed pairing.
Device and browser limitations
9to5Google’s testing reported that only one browser instance could be active at a time, while an Android tablet could be paired simultaneously. The interface could also identify or name the Android device in use. These were observations from that testing, not a published permanent Google policy. If you routinely use multiple computers, browser profiles or workstations, expect the active-session behavior to depend on the current Messages build.

Unpair computers you no longer trust
A paired browser should be treated as access to sensitive conversations. Remove sessions from shared, public, borrowed or sold computers, old laptops and browser profiles you no longer control. Closing a tab alone should not be treated as removing authorization.
- Open Messages for web while signed in to the relevant session.
- Open the navigation drawer or the account/device controls.
- Choose Unpair (or the equivalent device-removal command).
- Confirm removal if the interface asks.
Menu placement can change, so use the current device-removal control shown by your version of Messages. If a lost computer remains listed, unpair it from another active Messages for web session as soon as possible.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“Device pairing” is missing
- Update Google Messages through Google Play.
- Check that the phone is online and that you are using the intended Google Account.
- Open the official web address directly rather than a saved or altered link.
- Remember that the rollout may not be present on every account, device or app version.
- If QR pairing is offered, use it while the account flow is unavailable.
A non-Google SMS application, a changed menu location or a staged rollout can also explain why the option is absent; no universal Android-version minimum or geographic availability is established by the December 2023 report.

The phone confirmation never appears
- Check the phone’s network connection and keep Messages open.
- Verify the browser account.
- Reload Messages for web.
- Try a separate browser profile or private window.
- Unpair stale sessions and retry.
- Use QR pairing if it remains available.
These are practical recovery steps, not a complete list of Google-documented requirements. Browser policies, privacy extensions and work-managed accounts can interfere with sign-in or confirmation.
Messages remain visible on a shared computer
Use Unpair and sign out of the browser profile. Treat the session as active until it has been explicitly removed.
Changing phones or Google Accounts
The available rollout report does not define a complete migration policy. In practice, a phone replacement may require pairing again, and changing Google Accounts can associate the browser with a different Messages setup. After moving to a new phone, check Profile image → Device pairing and manually remove old browser sessions that are still listed.

What is still unverified
The December 18, 2023 report cannot establish current 2026 availability, a universal Android-version requirement, country coverage, support for every browser, whether QR pairing has since been removed, or whether pairing persists through every phone and account change. Google’s web endpoint is available at messages.google.com/web/; the sign-in shell alone does not document those rules. For any current support details, consult Google’s help material at support.google.com/messages/answer/7611075?hl=en.
