The screenshot and folder changes extend an existing note-taking feature; they are not prerequisites for using it.
What changed in Google Meet
Google announced the changes on August 26, 2026. When Take notes for me is used, Meet can capture screenshots of presented slides alongside critical takeaways. The images add visual context when a note refers to a slide, rather than leaving the reader to infer what was on screen from text alone. Google describes this as an addition to the AI-generated notes, not a replacement for them. Google’s August 26 announcement.

The same update says Meet automatically organizes meeting notes, transcripts, and recordings in a parent folder named “Google Meet” in the host’s My Drive. Attendees can receive Drive shortcuts to those items. The folder provides a shared point of organization for several kinds of meeting records; it does not mean every attendee owns a separate copy.

What happens to notes after a call?
Take notes for me captures discussion and action items and creates a notes document in Google Docs, saved to Drive. Google says the document is generated shortly after the meeting ends and attached to the Calendar event for internal invitees. The organizer can configure automatic sharing with invited participants, subject to organizational settings. Google’s Meet Help page explains the saving, sharing, and retention behavior.

Notes are one part of the post-call workflow. Depending on what was used in the meeting, the Google Meet folder can also contain a transcript or recording. The notes document follows the organization’s configured Meet retention policy, so access and continued availability can depend on company or school policy as well as the organizer’s sharing choices.
Google also documented a September 2026 move of the previous Meet recordings folder into the new “Google Meet” folder. Existing notes are retained through that folder change. This is a Drive organization change, not a new recording requirement.

Make the notes fit the meeting
Meet offers controls for selecting which sections appear in a meeting’s notes. In its May 28, 2026 update, Google described toggles for Summary, Decisions, Next Steps, and Details. The Decisions section can classify outcomes as Aligned, Needs Further Discussion, Disagreed, or Shelved; Google also said it streamlined the Summary section. These controls let participants emphasize outcomes and follow-up rather than treating every meeting as needing the same note structure. Google’s May 28 update.

How to use Take notes for me
- Check eligibility and settings. The feature requires an eligible Google Workspace edition or Google AI plan. Your administrator may restrict who can start or stop note-taking, or require explicit consent for note-taking, recording, or transcription.
- Start note-taking in the meeting. Use the Take notes for me control in Google Meet if it is available to you. The exact availability can depend on your account’s plan and organization settings.
- Choose the sections you need. Where the controls are available, toggle Summary, Decisions, Next Steps, or Details for that meeting. Use decision statuses to distinguish agreement from unresolved or shelved topics.
- After the meeting, open the record. Look for the notes document in the organizer’s Drive, under the “Google Meet” folder. Check the Calendar event and any Drive shortcut shared with attendees.
- Review before relying on it. Correct names, decisions, dates, and action items before distributing or acting on the notes. Google recommends clear audio and an agenda to improve the usefulness of generated notes.
Eligibility, languages, and limits
Google’s help documentation lists Take notes for me for eligible Google Workspace editions or Google AI plans. The supported languages listed are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. The feature supports one language at a time; meetings that switch among multiple spoken languages are not currently supported, according to Google Meet Help.
- It is not a verbatim or guaranteed-accurate record. Google’s product page recommends reviewing and editing AI-generated notes. Slide images add visual reference, but they do not establish that every spoken detail or decision was captured correctly. Google Meet product information.
- Admin controls can change what participants can do. Host-management settings may limit who starts or stops note-taking. An administrator may require explicit consent for features including notes, transcripts, and recordings.
- Sharing is configurable, and retention is governed by policy. Automatic sharing with invitees and continued access depend on the organizer’s configuration and the organization’s Meet retention settings.
- Folder shortcuts are not the same as ownership. Attendees may get shortcuts to artifacts kept in the organizer’s Drive; access can still depend on sharing permissions.
Google’s usage figures and broader plans
In its Google Cloud Next 2026 announcement, Google reported that more than 110 million attendees used Take Notes For Me in the previous month, and said usage on that measure had grown 8.5 times year over year. These are figures reported by Google, not independently audited statistics. Google also announced an expansion intended to capture notes from meetings beyond Meet, including meetings hosted on other providers; that announcement should not be read as a guarantee that the capability works for every external meeting or account. What the update means for meeting follow-up
The practical improvement is continuity: notes can point to visual material, and meeting artifacts have a common Drive location. For a team, that can make it easier to find a decision, identify a next step, or revisit a slide without searching through scattered files. The value still depends on whether note-taking is available, whether the right participants can access the files, and whether someone checks the generated record before treating it as authoritative.
