At the October 6, 2026 close, a third-party market comparison put NVIDIA’s forward price-to-earnings ratio at 19.78 and AMD’s at 58.48. That is a striking valuation gap, but it does not establish that NVIDIA is categorically safer or that either stock is mispriced. Forward P/E depends on projected earnings, the estimate provider and the share price; it can change quickly. The more defensible takeaway is that the two stocks carry different expectations and risks, and the best choice depends on what an investor means by “safer.”

What the valuation split shows—and what it doesn’t

The comparison summarized by MobileStalk, using Stock Analysis figures and updated October 7, 2026, reported the following market snapshot for the October 6 close:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Metric NVIDIA AMD
Share price $239.24 $649.42
Market capitalization $5.78 trillion $1.06 trillion
Trailing P/E 30.25 165.76
Forward P/E 19.78 58.48

These are third-party market data and estimates, not company guidance. Share price by itself does not show which stock is cheaper: companies have different numbers of shares outstanding. P/E compares a share price with earnings per share; trailing P/E uses reported earnings, while forward P/E uses forecast earnings. The latter can shift when prices move or analysts revise estimates. The comparison itself cautions that forward P/E is not a guarantee of future earnings and that a lower multiple alone does not prove NVIDIA is underpriced or AMD overpriced. “Historic” describes the reported gap, not a proven turning point or permanent relationship. A single snapshot cannot show how unusual the spread is across a full market cycle, and it does not predict which stock will deliver better returns.

How the companies’ latest reported results compare

The operating results help explain why investors might assign different expectations, but the companies reported different fiscal quarters and operate at very different revenue scales. Percent growth rates should not be mistaken for comparable dollar growth.

NVIDIA: fiscal Q2 2027

NVIDIA announced on August 26, 2026 that revenue for the quarter ended July 26, 2026 was $96.2 billion, up 18% sequentially and 106% year over year. Data Center revenue was $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year. The company reported GAAP gross margin of 75.0% and GAAP diluted EPS of $2.46. Its non-GAAP figures are separate; accounting bases should not be mixed. NVIDIA’s Q2 fiscal 2027 results.

AMD: Q2 2026

AMD announced on August 4, 2026 that Q2 2026 revenue was $11.5 billion. It reported GAAP gross margin of 54%, operating income of $2.0 billion, net income of $2.3 billion and diluted EPS of $1.38. On a non-GAAP basis, it reported gross margin of 56%, operating income of $3.1 billion, net income of $2.8 billion and diluted EPS of $1.66. • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

The results show NVIDIA’s much greater revenue scale in the cited periods, while AMD also reported substantial growth and profitability. They do not by themselves establish which company’s future earnings are more dependable: both stocks’ valuations ultimately depend on results that have yet to occur.

What “safer” can mean for these two stocks

There is no single safety ranking in the cited evidence. Investors may mean a smaller risk of paying too much for expected earnings, more durable business demand, steadier earnings, or lower share-price volatility. Those are distinct questions, and a lower forward P/E answers only part of the first one.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
  • Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system
  • Valuation risk: NVIDIA’s lower reported forward P/E gives it a smaller multiple at this dated snapshot, but the comparison depends on forecasts. If projected earnings fall short, the apparent discount may not protect shareholders.
  • Scale and growth expectations: NVIDIA’s reported revenue and Data Center business were far larger in its cited quarter. Scale can matter, but it does not guarantee that growth persists or that the share price will rise.
  • Execution and demand risk: Each company must convert expectations into products customers buy and earnings they report. Management commentary about demand is a view, not proof that future demand will continue.
  • Business-specific uncertainty: AMD’s FY2025 filing identifies product demand, market growth and competition, customer concentration, international sales, financing, and legal and regulatory developments around emerging technologies such as AI as risks. The available evidence does not provide a matched current risk ranking for NVIDIA.

AMD’s chair and CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, described the quarter as one with “record revenue and profitability” and said Data Center revenue more than doubled year over year. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said, “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” These are management characterizations of market conditions, not independent verification of future demand. AMD’s filing and investor materials also include forward-looking expectations; product plans and outlook are not achieved results. AMD’s FY2025 filing and AMD’s investor presentation.

A practical way to compare the stocks

  1. Set a common date and source. Compare prices and valuation estimates from the same date and provider. The October 6, 2026 figures above are a dated snapshot, not live quotes.
  2. Check what the forward multiple assumes. Confirm which forecast period and analyst estimates the provider uses. A forward P/E is only as useful as the earnings assumptions behind it.
  3. Compare results on like terms. Use the same accounting basis for margins and EPS, note each company’s fiscal period, and look at revenue scale as well as growth percentages.
  4. Decide which risk matters to you. If your main concern is valuation, the reported multiple gap is relevant. If you are concerned about demand durability, customer concentration, competition, execution or volatility, the P/E spread cannot settle the choice.
  5. Recheck before acting. Quotes, forecasts and quarterly results can change. A dated ratio should not be treated as current after new prices, estimates or company releases arrive.

Bottom line on the “safer” claim

The October 6, 2026 snapshot favors NVIDIA on the narrow metric of forward P/E: its reported multiple was 19.78 versus AMD’s 58.48. NVIDIA also reported much greater revenue in the cited quarter. Neither fact proves that NVIDIA is universally safer, undervalued, or destined to outperform. AMD reported profitable growth, while its filing identifies several business risks; the available evidence does not support a directly matched risk score for both companies. Treat the valuation gap as a reason to investigate assumptions and risks—not as a stand-alone buy signal.
