There’s a specific worry for anyone who writes Google Maps reviews but doesn’t hit publish: reports say Google Maps will delete all review drafts in July. If you’ve been “working on it later,” that warning is your cue to convert drafts into published reviews (or copy the text somewhere safe).
Because Google’s drafts aren’t guaranteed to stay around forever, the safest move is simple: locate any unfinished review drafts tied to your Google account and submit them before the July cleanup. The steps below cover Android, iPhone/iPad, and desktop, plus what to do if you can’t find the drafts.

What Google Maps review draft deletion in July means
A “review draft” is an in-progress review you started in Google Maps but didn’t submit. When Google runs a cleanup, drafts can be removed from the product so you don’t keep stale or incomplete content indefinitely.
Practically, that means anything you typed but never published may vanish—along with star ratings, photos, and your text—depending on how the draft was stored at the time it was created.

Why your review drafts can disappear
Draft deletion typically comes from one (or a combination) of these factors:
- Product cleanup: Systems periodically remove unfinished items after a set time window.
- Account and device state: Drafts may be tied to a session, device, or app version.
- Storage or policy changes: Google can change how drafts are stored or validated.
- App crashes or edits that never saved: If the app closes before saving, your work may exist only in memory.
Prerequisites before you start
Before you hunt for drafts, confirm these basics so you don’t waste time:
- You’re logged into the correct Google account in Google Maps.
- You have the latest Google Maps app for your device (Android or iOS).
- You’re on a stable connection (Wi‑Fi is fine; LTE is okay). Photos and uploads are sensitive to interruptions.
Check whether you actually have review drafts
Even if you remember writing “a draft,” it’s possible the draft wasn’t saved successfully. Your goal is to locate any draft you can still submit.

Android and iPhone/iPad (quick check)
Open Google Maps, then go to your profile and review your contribution area for anything labeled draft, pending, or in-progress.
Desktop (quick check)
On a computer, check your Google profile contributions and look for in-progress items in the reviews area.
Save your work: submit drafts before they’re deleted
If you find drafts, publish them now. The fastest path is usually: open the draft → review it → tap Post/Submit. If you can’t post immediately, copy your text first (offline backup) and come back.

- Open Google Maps on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your profile picture (top right).
- Go to Your contributions.
- Tap Reviews.
- Check for draft or pending entries.
- Open the draft, double-check the rating and text, then tap Post/Submit.
If posting fails, copy your review text first and retry on Wi‑Fi. Reviews with photos are more likely to stall on unstable connections.
Desktop (web browser)
- Go to
https://www.google.com/maps. - Make sure you’re signed in to the correct Google account.
- Open the menu (often the left sidebar) and find your Contributions or Your profile area.
- Select Reviews or the reviews contribution list.
- Look for any item that indicates it’s not fully posted.
- Open the review draft and choose Post to publish.
Desktop can be useful when the mobile app won’t show drafts properly. Still, if you’re approaching the July deadline, prioritize publishing from whichever device successfully opens your draft first.
If you can’t find your drafts, use these recovery paths
Some drafts can become invisible in the normal “Your contributions” screens. Use these checks in order—fast, low effort, and high signal.
Search your contribution history
Look for your text, star rating, or the place name in your review history. If the draft was already submitted but delayed, it may appear under reviews even if it doesn’t show as a draft.

Confirm whether it’s a draft or a draft-like item elsewhere
Sometimes what you think is a “draft review” is actually:
- A note you typed elsewhere (kept in clipboard or a Notes app).
- A review saved in a local drafts UI that isn’t actually stored as a Maps draft.
- An edit that never got posted due to an error or app restart.
If you don’t find a draft, treat it as “not safely stored” and reconstruct the review text from any backups you may have.
Best practices to avoid losing future drafts
Even if Google changes this cleanup behavior, you don’t want your writing to depend on perfect app behavior. A good workflow makes drafts redundant.
Draft workflow that survives interruptions
- Write the review text in one pass, then publish quickly if it meets your standards.
- If you need time to decide, keep the draft short and post a “v1” rather than waiting indefinitely.
- Before closing the app, confirm it saved by reopening the review edit screen.
Write offline first when the stakes are high
For detailed reviews (photos, long paragraphs, multiple visits), draft your text in Notes (iPhone/iPad/macOS) or a local editor on Android, then paste into Maps. You’re protecting against both draft deletion and app crashes.
Avoid app-state issues
- Keep Google Maps updated from the Play Store/App Store.
- Don’t kill the app mid-edit on low-memory phones.
- If drafts disappear repeatedly, restart the phone and retry on Wi‑Fi.
Common problems and troubleshooting
If you hit a snag while posting or editing, work through these checks. Most issues have a simple fix.
Your draft won’t open
Try opening it from a different entry point: from the place page (search the business name, then look for your activity) or from the reviews list. Also force-close the app and relaunch.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Android: open recent apps → swipe Google Maps away → reopen.
- iOS: swipe up to close Maps → reopen.
If it still won’t open, copy your best-remembered text and reconstruct the review as a fresh submission.
The review button is missing or disabled
Common causes are account permissions, location/permissions states, or temporary backend issues. Update the app, sign out/in, and check Play Store/App Store updates.
- Verify you’re logged into the correct account.
- Check internet access (try switching Wi‑Fi to LTE).
- Restart the app and try posting with no photo attachments first.
Edits keep reverting
If changes won’t stick, you may be losing progress due to a sync failure. Post after each meaningful edit, or paste your finalized text again and submit immediately.
If possible, avoid switching devices while editing the same draft.
Reviews submit, but don’t appear
Google often takes time to process and publish user reviews. It can also take a bit for search results to reflect changes. Wait a while, then check the place page directly.

When exactly will Google Maps delete review drafts?
Google’s cleanup is described as happening in July, but the exact day can vary by rollout and region. The safest plan is to assume your drafts could be removed at any point in July and publish them as early as possible.
Will my review drafts be lost if I don’t update the app?
Draft deletion is usually tied to backend cleanup and storage rules, not only to your app version. Still, updating reduces the risk of bugs that prevent saving or showing drafts.
Can I export or back up my draft text?
There isn’t a universal “export all drafts” button. The reliable backup is manual: copy the draft text (and any structured details) into a Notes app or document, then paste it back into Maps if needed.

If I posted the review, will it still be deleted in July?
No—published reviews aren’t typically treated as drafts. A cleanup is meant for drafts/in-progress items, not for reviews that have already been submitted and processed.
What if I don’t see drafts but I know I wrote something?
Verify your Google account, search your review history for the place name, and check whether the item became a pending post or was never saved. If you can’t recover it, rewrite from your memory or offline notes and publish a fresh version.
Bottom Line
If Google Maps is set to delete all review drafts in July, treat every unfinished review as time-sensitive. Find your drafts, submit them early, and if you can’t locate them, copy your text and recreate the review so your effort doesn’t disappear.
Once you publish, your review becomes part of your contributions and is far less likely to be affected by draft cleanup routines.
