Some Android users are reporting a new or expanded toggle under Find My Device that refers to network settings. In other words, the feature that helps your phone be found via nearby networks seems to be showing up for only a subset of devices and accounts.
This guide explains what that means, how to check whether your device has the setting, what you should configure, and what to do when it doesn’t appear or doesn’t seem to work.

What are Android Find My Device network settings
Android’s Find My Device is Google’s built-in service for locating a lost phone. Network settings typically refer to options that help location discovery work even when your device can’t provide a traditional GPS fix immediately.

Why some users see it before others
Staged rollouts are normal for Android and Google services. Your account, device model, region, and current versions of Google components can determine when you see the toggle.
- Server-side rollout: Google can enable the feature for a percentage of users first.
- Device eligibility: Some settings are gated by hardware capability (radio support, power management behavior) or firmware versions.
- Component versioning: Many Find My Device behaviors live in Google Play services and related apps, so the change may require a specific version.
- Region and carrier differences: Availability and performance can vary by country or network configuration.
So if you don’t see it yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean something is broken—it may just be waiting its turn.
What changes when the network settings go live
The most noticeable outcome is improved findability in real-world loss scenarios: your phone may be more likely to be detected through network context when GPS isn’t immediately available (for example, indoors, under heavy power saving, or shortly after startup).
In practice, you’ll still rely on the usual Find My Device workflows: Google will show the most recent location it can determine and you can trigger a ring, lock the device, or erase data (when appropriate).
Check whether your device has the network settings
There are two common ways to verify whether the new toggle exists on your phone.
Method 1: In the Find My Device UI
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy (on some phones) or search for Find My Device.
- Open Find My Device.
- Look for an additional option related to network, location assistance, or help from network.
Method 2: Using the Find My Device web view
- On a computer, open google.com/android/find.
- Sign in with the same Google account as your phone.
- Select your device.
- If the network-related option is active or required, you may see hints or status messaging that it’s enabled.
Enable and configure network-based location help
If you see the network settings toggle, the best default approach is to leave it enabled unless you have a specific privacy constraint. The goal is to improve the odds of detection after loss.
On Pixel and stock Android
On Pixel devices, the setting usually lives inside the Find My Device or Location-related security area.

Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Search for Find My Device.
- Enable any toggle mentioning network or background.
- Check Battery settings for background restrictions.
- Allow Google Play services to run in the background if the option exists.
Prerequisites: what must be on for network features to work
Even if the network settings toggle is present, it won’t help much if key permissions and services are constrained.
Location settings
- Ensure Location is turned on.
- Verify Location services allow at least approximate location behavior.
- If your phone offers a Location accuracy or similar setting, consider using the default accuracy profile.
Google account and Play Services
- Be signed into the correct Google account on the phone.
- Update Google Play services via Play Store.
- If you use a work profile or multiple accounts, confirm the phone is enrolled under the same account used on google.com/android/find.
Background and battery restrictions
- Disable or loosen Battery optimization restrictions for Google Play services and related Google components.
- Turn off extreme Battery saver during testing.
- Check for “restricted apps” lists in the battery settings UI.
Permissions and network conditions
- Let Google Play services use location in the background if asked.
- If you use a VPN or Private DNS, test temporarily without them if locations seem stale.
- Data Saver may prevent required signals—consider disabling it briefly for verification.
How to test and confirm it’s working
You can’t perfectly simulate “lost phone” conditions, but you can validate that Find My Device can read fresh signals.
- With your phone powered normally, open google.com/android/find on a computer.
- Select your device.
- Check whether the location timestamp updates within minutes when you move the phone.
- Trigger Ring and confirm the device responds.
- Toggle network settings off/on (if you have that control) and retest after a short wait.
If location updates remain stuck for long periods, focus on permissions, Play services updates, and battery restrictions rather than the network toggle itself.
Troubleshooting when network settings don’t appear
When users report “the network settings didn’t go live for me,” the cause is usually rollout timing or missing prerequisites.

Update what matters
- Open the Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon > Manage apps & device.
- Update Google Play services.
- Update Google (the app) and Android System WebView if updates are pending.
- Update your system software via Settings > System updates or Software update.
Re-check permissions and location toggles
- Confirm Find My Device is enabled in settings.
- Open Location settings and verify Location services is on.
- Check permissions for Google Play services and ensure it isn’t blocked for location.
Clear cache for Google Play services (only if needed)
This is a controlled troubleshooting step. Clearing cache won’t delete your data, but it can briefly interrupt service behavior.
- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Tap Google Play services.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Restart your phone.
Reset network-related toggles carefully
If Find My Device appears enabled but behaves oddly, try:
- Disable and re-enable Airplane mode.
- Turn off Data Saver temporarily.
- Disconnect and reconnect to Wi‑Fi.
A full device reboot can also flush stale networking states.
Troubleshooting when the network settings are enabled but Find My Device still struggles
If your phone has the network settings toggle but the location is stale, the issue is usually discoverability, permissions, or background restrictions.
Improve discoverability
- Ensure the phone has reasonable connectivity (Wi‑Fi or mobile data) when you test.
- Move to a location with better signal if you’re validating indoors.
- Keep Location services on and consider briefly enabling location accuracy features.
Rule out battery optimization conflicts
- Go to Settings > Battery (or Battery & device care).
- Open Battery optimization or Unrestricted apps.
- Add Google Play services (and any related Google components you see) to Unrestricted.
- Restart the phone after changing the policy.
Confirm the device is actually online
Find My Device can only show what it last knew. If your phone is offline or powered down, you’ll see a stale timestamp.
Check for VPN, Private DNS, and data saver interference
- Temporarily disable VPN and retest.
- Check Private DNS (Settings > Network & Internet) and switch to Off for testing.
- Turn off Data Saver and retest location freshness.
Privacy and data-use expectations
Network-based discovery exists to help you recover a device. It typically relies on signals available to the phone’s normal radios and system services. It’s not the same thing as active GPS tracking every second.
What the network feature is designed to do
It helps the Find My Device system learn more about your phone’s last known context, especially when a strong GPS fix isn’t available.
What it is not
- It’s not a guarantee of real-time tracking after loss.
- It’s not the same as a third-party “always-on” tracker.
- It doesn’t override your device’s fundamental connectivity limitations.
Comparison: Find My Device vs alternatives
Google’s built-in approach is a solid baseline, but OEM ecosystems can offer additional recovery options.

Google Find My Device
Best for cross-brand consistency as long as you’re logged into a Google account. If the Android Find My Device network settings toggle is available on your device, it’s designed to improve detection odds.
Samsung Find My Mobile
Samsung’s service can work with Samsung accounts and may include features like remote unlocking depending on your device model and setup. It’s worth enabling alongside Find My Device if you own a Samsung phone.
Third-party tracking apps
Third-party apps can offer extra features, but many require extra permissions and ongoing battery usage. They can also be more complex to set up during an emergency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the toggle alone is enough: battery optimization and background location often matter more.
- Switching Google accounts: if you sign into another account, Find My Device may stop using the account you expect.
- Ignoring stale timestamps: stale location usually means the phone was offline or constrained.
- Testing with Battery saver permanently on: it can change background behavior and reduce discovery quality.
FAQs about Android Find My Device network settings
Why do I not see Android Find My Device network settings?
The most common reasons are staged rollout timing, missing Play services version requirements, or device/region eligibility. Also verify you’re signed into the same Google account used on google.com/android/find.
Do I need to turn on Location for this to work?
Yes. Find My Device relies on location permissions and system services. Keep Location enabled and avoid blocking Google Play services from running in the background.
Will this make my phone track me in real time?
No. Network-based discovery helps with recovery and last-known context, not continuous live tracking the way some specialized trackers attempt to do.
If I enable the network setting, will it always find my phone accurately?
Not always. It improves the chances, but you still need connectivity, reasonable battery behavior, and a device that can transmit signals when needed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if Find My Device shows the wrong location?
First check whether your phone had a recent network connection. Then verify Location settings and battery restrictions for Google Play services. A reboot and Play services update can fix a surprising number of stale-location issues.
Bottom Line
Android Find My Device network settings are part of a staged rollout that improves device recovery odds when GPS isn’t immediately usable. If you see the toggle, enable it and protect background behavior for Google Play services.
If you don’t see it, update Google Play services and system software, confirm Location permissions, and give the rollout time. When the setting is present but performance is still weak, focus on battery optimization, VPN/Private DNS, and connectivity before assuming the feature is broken.
