Google Maps and Waze both work with Android Auto and provide voice-guided navigation, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance. The practical difference is in the controls and discovery features each documents: Waze offers a dedicated in-car incident-reporting flow and access to places saved in its phone app, while Google Maps offers nearby place categories and, on compatible displays, incident reports and voting. Official help pages do not establish that either app is universally more accurate or faster.

What both apps offer in Android Auto

Android Auto supports Google Maps and Waze as navigation options. Its help documentation describes voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance with Google Maps or another supported navigation app (Android Auto: Get turn-by-turn navigation).

Both apps accept voice input. To type a destination using the car display, the vehicle must be parked. Waze’s instructions also say to put the handbrake up before typing (Android Auto: Get turn-by-turn navigation; Waze: Use Waze in Android Auto).

When Google Maps is the better fit

You want to browse nearby places

Maps has car-display categories for nearby services and destinations, including gas stations, parking garages, and coffee shops. That makes it a useful fit when the destination is not settled and you want to browse by type of place rather than select a saved location (Google Maps: Use Google Maps on your car display).

You want to interact with incident reports, if supported

On compatible displays, a signed-in Google Maps user can submit an incident report and vote on reports from other drivers. Google notes that incident controls are not available on every display and that some report types are limited to certain countries, so do not assume the controls will appear in every car (Google Maps: Use Google Maps on your car display).

When Waze is the better fit

You use its incident-reporting workflow

Waze’s Android Auto documentation lists reports for traffic, police, crashes, hazards, bad weather, blocked lanes, and map issues. Use those controls only when it is safe to do so, and keep attention on road conditions (Waze: Use Waze in Android Auto).

You want fewer spoken prompts

Waze documents two voice-direction options: Normal, with all guidance and alerts, and Less chatty, with essential guidance and alerts only. Choose based on how much spoken information you want while driving (Waze: Change your voice directions).

How to use each app with Android Auto

Google Maps

  1. Connect your phone to Android Auto and choose Google Maps from the car’s Android Auto launcher.
  2. Choose a destination from Recent or Saved, browse Categories, or ask by voice. To type on the car screen, first make sure the vehicle is parked.
  3. During a route, use the displayed traffic information where available. If signed in and the display supports it, use the incident-reporting or voting controls.

Android Auto’s documented example voice requests include “Take me home,” “Navigate to [location],” “Directions to [shop name],” and “Stop navigation” (Android Auto: Get turn-by-turn navigation; Google Maps: Use Google Maps on your car display).

Waze

  1. Connect your phone to the car by USB or wirelessly, then open Waze in Android Auto.
  2. Enter a destination by voice or on-screen search. For typing, park and put the handbrake up.
  3. Select a place saved in the Waze mobile app, or start a route to another destination.
  4. Choose Normal or Less chatty voice directions in Waze’s voice settings. Use in-car reporting controls only when safe.

How to choose for your car and country

  • Choose Maps if browsing nearby categories or using its compatible-display incident reports and voting matters most.
  • Choose Waze if you prefer its documented reporting flow, use places saved in Waze, or want its Less chatty setting.
  • Check availability in your own setup before relying on a feature: country, language, vehicle display, phone, and app support can affect what is available.

There is no evidence in the official help documentation reviewed that establishes a general winner for route speed, traffic freshness, ETA accuracy, or navigation quality. Those are not head-to-head performance findings in these sources. Voice command handling may also change: Android Auto says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices and that further transition details are forthcoming in 2026 (Android Auto: Get turn-by-turn navigation).
