All three come from Failbetter Games and share the Fallen London universe, but their formats and play styles differ.
What makes a game feel like Fallen London?
Failbetter Games describes Fallen London as a free, browser-based text adventure and literary RPG. Its stories evolve with player choices, and its bite-sized sessions let players pursue different stories and ambitions. As the publisher puts it, “Welcome to a dark and hilarious Victorian-Gothic underworld, where every choice has a consequence, from the style of your hat to the price of your soul.”

For a close match, look beyond the dark Victorian setting. The more useful questions are whether authored writing drives play, whether choices shape a character or relationships, and how much travel, combat, or survival happens between story scenes. The recommendations below are the closest verified options in the same universe, not an exhaustive list of every game that might appeal to Fallen London players.

| Game | Best fit | How it differs from Fallen London |
|---|---|---|
| Sunless Sea | Exploration and survival in the Fallen London universe | A discovery-and-exploration game, with officers whose stories can be uncovered. Zubmariner is an expansion. |
| Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition | Travel, exploration, and a strange Victorian setting in space | You captain a spacefaring locomotive, with narrative choices, combat, equipment upgrades, and captain lineage or reloading after death. |
| Mask of the Rose | Romance, social choices, and a murder mystery | A visual novel built around matchmaking, relationships, storycrafting, and investigating a murder. |
Choose Sunless Sea for exploration in the same world
Sunless Sea is the most direct choice if the setting and prose are what you want to revisit, but you also want to travel and discover things rather than stay with a browser-based text-adventure format. Failbetter describes it as an exploration game set in the Fallen London universe and highlights stories to uncover through your officers.
#1 Best Overall
It is a fit for readers who want narrative discovery wrapped in an active expedition. The available official description establishes that broad focus, but does not provide a detailed basis for comparing its difficulty or pacing with Fallen London. Zubmariner is an expansion, not a separate recommendation in this list.
Choose Sunless Skies for a locomotive voyage among the stars
Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition takes the strange Victorian atmosphere into space: you captain a locomotive and encounter exploration, narrative choices, and combat. The Nintendo listing describes equipment upgrades and the option to continue a lineage of captains or reload after death. Steam lists it as a single-player RPG and gives its release date as January 31, 2019.
Rank #2
Choose it if you want the shared world with more active travel and combat between story moments. Those systems also make it a less direct fit if your priority is mostly text and choices. Store listings and regional availability can change, so check the storefront for your region.
Choose Mask of the Rose for relationships and mystery
Mask of the Rose is Failbetter’s visual novel in the Fallen London universe. Its focus is social rather than expedition-based: the developer highlights matchmaking, relationship choices, storycrafting, and a murder investigation. Failbetter also describes it as an introduction to the setting that does not require playing earlier games.

Pick it when you want character relationships and a mystery to sit at the center of play. It shares the universe, but the official description presents it as a visual novel, not as a version of Fallen London’s browser-game format.

A November 2025 post in the Interactive Fiction Community described wanting narrative-rich games with actual mechanics, good characters, and less grinding. That is one player’s preference, not evidence that any of these games involves less grinding than another. The official descriptions establish differences in format and broad gameplay, but do not support a reliable grinding comparison.
