Google Maps has been rolling out a redesigned set of location pins, including changes to both pin shapes and color styling. If you’ve noticed markers looking different from what your friends see, that’s normal—rollouts are typically staged and can vary by app version and device configuration.
This guide explains what the redesign usually affects, why it matters, how to adapt on Android and iPhone/iPad, and what to do if the new pins appear inconsistent or missing.

What to expect on Android vs iPhone and iPad

Android
On Android, the most common reason you don’t see the new pins is an older Google Maps app build or delayed rollout to your account/device.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap Search and type Google Maps.
- Open Google Maps in the results.
- If you see Update, tap it. If you see Open, you’re already current.
- Launch Google Maps and pan/zoom in an area with multiple POI markers (downtown or transit hubs help).
iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
On iPhone and iPad, the same principle applies: verify you’re on the latest Google Maps app build, then give the staged rollout time.
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Google Maps.
- Tap the app entry and look for Update.
- If there’s no Update, your app build is likely current.
- Reopen Google Maps and check pins in several places (not just one neighborhood).
Accessibility and contrast: what you should check
Color redesign is only useful if it stays readable for more people. If you rely on high visibility, test the pins under your usual display conditions (night mode, reduced motion, and accessibility contrast settings).

WCAG contrast in practice
Google’s marker work generally targets readability similar to WCAG 2.1 AA requirements, where text and key UI elements typically aim for a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text. For markers, the goal is different (visual separation vs text contrast), but the practical outcome is the same: colors shouldn’t blend into the map background.
If you can, test two states:
- Day/light theme
- Night/dark theme
When pins are updated correctly, they should remain distinguishable without needing to zoom excessively.
Common issues when the redesign looks wrong or missing
Because rollouts can be staggered, “missing” doesn’t always mean broken. Still, if your experience is unusually inconsistent, these are the most common causes and what to try.
New pins don’t show up
Try this order of operations:
- Update Google Maps from the App Store or Play Store.
- Force close and reopen Google Maps, then retry.
- Check system theme: toggle between light/dark and back once.
- Test another location: some areas have more POI density, making visual changes easier to spot.
If you still don’t see it after updating, it may simply be that your device hasn’t received the specific marker asset rollout yet.
Colors look washed out or too bright
This is often related to device display settings (not Maps itself). Check these:

Pins are hard to distinguish at a glance
Even with a better design, dense areas still require scanning. Improve what you see:
- Zoom in slightly (marker differentiation often becomes clearer at certain zoom levels).
- Reduce visual clutter by switching map layers (for example, turning off some overlays if you’re using them).
- Tap a marker to confirm the place type rather than relying purely on color.
Pins overlap or hide labels
When you’re in a crowded grid, markers can stack. Try:
- Pan slowly instead of quick flicks to let the map finish rendering.
- Zoom out a bit or zoom in—either can change clustering behavior.
- Use Search for the specific place name to jump directly to the right marker.
Workarounds that still help regardless of pin style
Even if your screen hasn’t updated, you can still get the intended speed benefit by changing how you confirm results.
Use lists and directions panels
Instead of scanning pins alone, rely on the result card or list view once you tap a marker. That panel usually gives the category and details that color/shape are hinting at.
Zoom level and map mode
Small zoom adjustments can dramatically improve marker clarity. Test at two zoom levels—one “overview” and one “street-level”—then keep the level that makes pins easiest to identify.
Search and category filters
Search for what you want (for example, restaurants, gas, transit stations) so the app can filter results into a smaller set of pins. This minimizes confusion when pin visuals vary between devices.

Managing expectations: rollout behavior and device consistency
Google Maps marker redesigns are commonly delivered via staged rollouts. That means different people, even on the same city, can temporarily see different marker styles.
Staggered release patterns
Common reasons for staggered changes include:
- App version rollouts that take days or weeks to reach everyone.
- Server-side asset delivery that’s enabled gradually.
- Device-specific rendering differences based on display and performance profiles.
Mixed experiences across devices
You might see the old pins on one phone and the new pins on another. That’s normal when one device updates earlier or has different system settings affecting appearance.
Developer and data considerations (if you build location features)
If you’re building around Google Maps data, don’t treat pin visuals as a reliable contract. Users’ marker looks can change with updates.
Don’t key off pin visuals
Use stable identifiers such as place IDs, returned category/type metadata, or your own UI logic rather than assuming a color or shape will remain constant over time.
Test against multiple device themes
If your app overlays or references map UI, verify readability in both light and dark modes. Also test at multiple zoom levels, because marker clustering can change how points behave.

Why do my pins look different from a friend’s?

How do I force Google Maps to show the redesigned pins?
You can’t reliably force a specific style, but you can increase your odds by updating Google Maps from the App Store or Play Store and restarting the app. If the rollout is staged, it may still take time.
Are the new pin colors meaningful, or just cosmetic?
They’re meant to communicate category/type information faster at a glance. Still, tapping the marker for the place details is the most reliable confirmation, especially when multiple POIs are nearby.
What if the redesign makes pins harder for me to read?
Try increasing display brightness, checking accessibility color filters, and using zoom level adjustments. If needed, rely on the place cards and search filtering rather than visual scanning alone.
