What Screen Distance Is (and what it needs to work)
Screen Distance uses the iPhone’s front-facing sensors to estimate how far you are from the screen and then issues reminders when the distance is too close. Because it relies on sensor input, it can fail silently when the camera/sensor pipeline is blocked, the feature is disabled, or the conditions aren’t met.

Before you troubleshoot: confirm compatibility and settings
Check your iPhone model
Screen Distance depends on the front sensor system used for face awareness and depth estimation. If you’re on an older model (or a model with limited TrueDepth-style sensing), the feature may be unavailable or unreliable.
On your iPhone, confirm you can find the option at: Settings → Accessibility → Screen Distance. If you don’t see it, there’s nothing to troubleshoot for iOS 18/17 on that device—check compatibility first.
Confirm you’re looking for the right behavior
Some users expect an always-on indicator. Typically, reminders appear when your viewing distance stays too close for a period. If you only test for a second or two, you may think it’s broken.
10 Best Tips to Fix Screen Distance Not Working in iOS 18/17
1) Toggle Screen Distance off and back on
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Screen Distance, switch it Off, wait 10–20 seconds, then switch it On again. This resets the feature’s active state.
If you’re in an iOS 18 beta or recently updated, doing a fresh toggle often forces the setting to reinitialize.
2) Re-check the Accessibility configuration page
Open Settings → Accessibility and make sure Screen Distance isn’t overridden by other related Vision settings. Also verify there isn’t a profile or automation disabling it.
Look for items that affect attention or reminders (for example, options under Vision or Per-App settings) and temporarily disable them to test.

3) Update to the latest iOS 18/17 build
Minor releases fix sensor- and accessibility-related bugs. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → Software Update and install the newest version.
After updating (and rebooting), re-enable Screen Distance and test again for at least 30–60 seconds of normal use.
4) Restart your iPhone (not just lock/unlock)
A full restart clears stuck camera/sensor sessions that can block features relying on the front sensors. Power cycle your iPhone, then test Screen Distance in a well-lit place.
If it started failing after an app crashed or you ran a heavy camera workload, a restart is often the fastest fix.

Screen Distance can be sensitive to front-camera smudges and case-related interference. Wipe the front camera area and check for protective glass that overlaps sensors.
Also remove any screen protectors or covers that extend upward toward the TrueDepth module (or covers that don’t line up correctly with the notch/camera housing).
6) Test in good lighting with a stable facing position
Test with the front of the iPhone facing you, in normal indoor light (avoid darkness or backlit windows). Extremely low light or strong glare can reduce sensor accuracy and stop reminders.

Move from “close” to “too close” gradually, and keep your head/face relatively steady for 10–20 seconds.

7) Check Screen Time and restrictions that may block reminders
If your device uses Screen Time restrictions, confirm nothing prevents the feature’s reminders. Go to Settings → Screen Time, then review allowed content and any downtime/app limits that might indirectly affect accessibility behavior.
Also check if you use Guided Access or similar modes that can constrain system features.
8) Ensure the front camera and Face ID aren’t failing
Screen Distance can be impacted by front sensor issues. Test Face ID reliability: go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode and run Set Up Face ID (or verify it works).
If Face ID fails repeatedly, fix that first. In many cases, a broken sensor, dirty hardware, or a hardware failure will cause Screen Distance to “never trigger.”
9) Reset Face ID attention settings and re-enable Face ID features
If your Face ID still works but attention-based behavior is inconsistent, you can re-check the toggles in Settings → Face ID & Passcode. Ensure the related options that depend on attention are enabled where applicable.
Then toggle Screen Distance off/on again after you change Face ID settings, so the system rebinds the sensor pipeline.

10) Reset all settings (last resort)
If Screen Distance still won’t work after the steps above, a settings reset can clear corrupted preferences. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings.
This does not erase your data, but it resets Wi‑Fi passwords, display settings, and some privacy preferences—so re-check Screen Distance after the reboot.

Night Shift / True Tone
Adjust screen color temperature. They don’t affect the sensor calculations that power Screen Distance.

Why does Screen Distance work for a few minutes, then stop?
That pattern often points to a sensor interruption (poor lighting, obstruction, smudged front lens) or a conflicting accessibility setting. Clean the front area, test in consistent lighting, and temporarily disable other Vision-related options.
Do I need to restart after every iOS update?
Not always, but it helps when accessibility features rely on camera/sensor sessions. If Screen Distance acts up right after updating to iOS 18 or iOS 17, do a restart and toggle the setting once.
Is Screen Distance supposed to work everywhere and with any app?
