Android Police writer Akshay Bhalla reported using a detailed voice prompt to plan a flexible day near Mandrem Beach in North Goa, then using Google Maps-linked place information and directions to follow up. That is a useful planning shortcut—not proof that Gemini’s suggestions, traffic details, or venue information will always be current.
Why a conversational prompt can help when Maps feels overwhelming
Google Maps is useful for finding nearby places, but comparing restaurants, activities, opening times, and distances one search at a time can leave a traveler with more options than a plan. A conversational request lets you state the constraints together: where you will be, what you want to do, who is traveling with you, and which choices matter most.

Bhalla described dictating a request for a day at Mandrem Beach that included watching the sunset, having local food at a beachside restaurant or shack, possibly trying water sports nearby, and keeping the schedule flexible because he was traveling with an infant. He also asked for restaurants rated at least 4.2 on Google Maps and other review platforms, and asked Gemini to consider weather, UV, traffic, and travel and food blogs. He reported that Gemini returned suggestions taking reviews, opening hours, traffic, and travel time into account, including a recommendation to favor shade or indoor dining during peak UV hours it identified as 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those are details from one writer’s account, not independently verified conditions or a result every traveler should expect.

Include the details that actually narrow your choices, and ask for an output you can act on rather than a long list of places. A practical prompt could be:

I’m spending [time] in [destination]. Suggest a flexible plan with [interests], [food preference], and [constraints]. Group suggestions by area, include directions and estimated travel time when available, and flag opening hours, weather, traffic, or booking details I should verify.
For a family day, specify the child’s needs, breaks, shade, and how easily you can swap activities. For a short visit, provide your available hours and starting point. If a rating threshold matters, name the platform and minimum score, but still inspect the reviews yourself; ratings are not a guarantee that a venue suits your needs.

Ask Gemini to separate what it found from what you should confirm, and to provide place links or map pins. You can then inspect the candidates, compare distances, and save useful results instead of treating the generated itinerary as a fixed schedule.

Google’s Gemini help documentation says its Maps connection can find places such as businesses, restaurants, parks, and attractions; provide details including addresses, descriptions, websites, ratings, and opening hours; and give directions for different transport modes. Depending on availability, place details may also include reviews, an AI summary, images or videos, and an “Open in Maps” action. Users can view an interactive map and export pinned places to a custom Google Maps list. Some of these capabilities are rolling out gradually.

The documented connection requires signing in and having Keep Activity enabled. Google says it is unavailable in Gemini Live chats and Gemini in Google Messages. The help page also lists eligibility conditions for some Maps-in-Gemini features: users must be at least 18, use a personal Google Account, and ask about a place in English. Device location can be used with permission; saved Home and Work locations are supported.
There is an important limit for itinerary planning: Google’s help page says the Maps connection does not provide live traffic updates. It also does not support saving location history, using saved places other than Home or Work, or adding a review. So do not rely on Gemini’s Maps connection alone for current congestion or a live departure decision. Check traffic in Google Maps and verify opening hours and conditions with current sources before setting out.

Gemini, manual Maps searches, and Ask Maps
These options can complement one another. Manual Maps searches remain useful for inspecting a particular area and navigating; Gemini is useful for expressing several preferences at once; Ask Maps is a separate conversational Maps experience whose availability depends on its rollout.

Google announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, with its launch beginning in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS. That announcement describes the launch at that time, not guaranteed availability everywhere today. Check your Maps app for access. Google said Ask Maps draws on information from more than 300 million places and a community of more than 500 million contributors; those are Google-published product figures, not independent evidence that every recommendation is complete or accurate.

Use Gemini for trip research, not as the booking desk
Gemini can also search real-time flight information through Google Flights and hotels through Google Hotels, but Google says it cannot book, cancel, or change those reservations, check a traveler in, or provide saved-flight alerts. Its search also has limits, including airline-alliance searches and packages unavailable through Google Hotels.
For eligible users, Gemini can search Viator tours and activities by destination, date, type, price, or duration. The documented flow sends you to Viator to complete a booking; Gemini does not book or manage the activity itself. Google’s help page lists the feature’s stated conditions as a personal Google Account, age 18 or over, U.S. location, English, and Keep Activity enabled. These conditions may change, so check the current help page and your account’s access before relying on the feature.
