Samsung Find and Google Find Hub can help locate or secure a lost Galaxy, but results depend on account setup, settings, power and connectivity.

Yes. If your Galaxy had Samsung’s finding features enabled, sign in to Samsung Find or SmartThings Find and check its location; you can also try Google Find Hub. A result may be a last-known location rather than a live one, and tracking or remote actions depend on the phone’s settings, power, connection and account setup.

What to do when your Samsung phone is missing

  1. From a browser, open Samsung Find or SmartThings Find and sign in with the Samsung account associated with the phone. Select the device and check the map. You can also use the service from another Galaxy device. Samsung’s US guide covers these steps at How to locate your lost Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet.

  2. If you think the phone is nearby, choose Ring. Samsung says it rings for one minute, even if the phone is muted or set to vibrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. If the phone may be moving or stolen, choose Track location to request updates every 15 minutes. Treat the map as information for authorities, not a reason to approach a suspected thief.

What needs to be enabled for Samsung to find the phone?

Samsung’s US support guide says the phone should be powered on and connected to a stable network, have a Samsung account added, and have remote controls enabled. The guide lists these settings under Settings > Security and privacy > Lost device protection:

  • Allow this phone to be found
  • Send last location

Samsung says remote controls turn on by default when a Samsung account is added. Check the settings while you still have the phone, rather than relying on a default after it goes missing. Menu labels and availability can vary by model, software version and carrier.

Why a location may be unavailable or out of date

A map does not necessarily show where the phone is now. If it is offline, powered off, out of battery or unable to meet the service’s requirements, the displayed position may be stored or last known. Samsung says only the last known location is available when the phone is powered off. Google likewise says Find Hub may show a last known location if one is available; its encrypted recent-location and offline-network features depend on settings and device conditions. Neither service guarantees a current location for every phone.

For Google Find Hub, Google’s Android Help page lists power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, a signed-in Google Account, Find Hub being on and visibility on Google Play among the requirements to secure or erase a device. Google says adding a Google Account automatically turns on Find Hub, but checking the phone’s settings in advance is still prudent.

Protect yourself if the phone may have been stolen

Samsung’s US Support guide gives this warning: “If you are using SmartThings Find or Samsung Find to locate a stolen phone or tablet, do not go directly to the location on the map. Inform the authorities and let them retrieve it for you.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote erasure is a last resort because it deletes data and can end location visibility. Samsung advises backing up before resetting and notes that Google device protection may require the registered Google Account if the phone is recovered. Google says a device’s location will not be available in Find Hub after erasure. If remote erasure fails, change passwords for accounts that may be signed in.
