Beta builds are where regressions show up first—sometimes only when paired with a specific Android Auto version, projection system, or phone setup.
This guide focuses on practical, repeatable fixes. Start with the quickest checks (versions and restarts), then move through cache resets and a safe rollback from beta to stable if you need immediate stability.

Confirm it’s the Google Maps beta build
Before you reset anything, confirm you’re actually on the Google Maps beta. The same symptoms can also come from an Android Auto update, a corrupted app cache, or a head unit firmware quirk.
Check the installed app version
On your Android phone, open Google Maps → tap your profile icon (top-right) → Settings → find the About or Version line. If you see a beta-specific build number and you joined the beta program, that’s your likely culprit.

Confirm you’re enrolled in the beta program
Open the Google Play Store listing for Google Maps → scroll to the beta section. If it says you’re in beta (or shows an “Update” button tied to beta), you’ve found the risk factor.
Fast fixes that often stop the crash
These steps cost almost no time and fix a surprising number of “beta crashes” caused by stale data and temporary projection glitches.
1) Reboot the phone and restart Android Auto
Restart your Android phone. Then disconnect Android Auto, wait 10–20 seconds, and reconnect. If you use wireless Android Auto, try switching to wired (or vice versa) for the test.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2) Force-stop Google Maps (on the phone)
Go to Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Force stop. Reopen it, then start Android Auto and try navigation again.
3) Clear Google Maps cache (not data)
In Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Storage, choose Clear cache. Keep “Clear data” for later—cache clears are reversible and won’t wipe your account-related settings.
Verify version compatibility (Android Auto + Maps)
A common failure pattern is: a fresh Google Maps beta build breaks an integration path used by a particular Android Auto release. Versions don’t always match neatly across phone models.
What to check
| Component | Where to check | What you’re looking for |
|---|---|---|
| Android Auto | Play Store → Android Auto listing → version number | Recent updates right before the crash began |
| Google Maps | Play Store or Maps settings → version/build | Beta build label or a brand-new beta update |
| Android OS | Settings → About phone | OS update timing that overlaps with the issue |
Practical compatibility rule
If the crash started within 24–72 hours of installing the latest Maps beta, treat Maps beta as the primary suspect. Then confirm Android Auto wasn’t updated the same day.

If you need Android Auto navigation to work reliably today, this is the cleanest fix. Stable versions are regression-tested for integration scenarios like Android Auto projection.
Option A: Leave the beta program
- Open the Google Maps Play Store listing.
- Scroll to the beta section.
- Tap Leave (or Leave beta).
- Open Play Store again and tap Update if it prompts you to switch tracks.
Option B: Uninstall Maps updates and return to the stable base (if needed)
On some devices, Google Maps may ship as a preinstalled app. If you’re stuck in beta behavior, returning to the stable base can help.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
- Go to Settings → Apps → Google Maps.
- Tap Uninstall updates.
- Reopen Play Store and install the latest stable update (not beta).
Reset the right caches and app data safely
If you’ve already left beta and it still crashes, you may be dealing with corrupted local data used by Android Auto integration. Clear cache first, then data if necessary.
Clear cache for both apps (recommended order)
- Clear cache for Google Maps.
- Then clear cache for Android Auto.
- Restart phone and try again.
Clear data (use when cache doesn’t fix it)
Clearing data resets local configuration. You shouldn’t lose your Google account navigation history, but some offline and local settings may need to rebuild.
Recommended Free Tools
- Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Storage → Clear data.
- Repeat for Android Auto only if Maps alone doesn’t stop the crash.
- Reconnect Android Auto and re-test navigation.
Clean reinstall steps (Google Maps and Android Auto)
If you want the most “factory clean” outcome without replacing your phone, reinstalling both apps can clear broken integrations after multiple betas/updates.
Reinstall Google Maps
- Uninstall Google Maps.
- Reboot your phone.
- Install stable Google Maps from Play Store (ensure you’re not still enrolled in beta).
Reinstall Android Auto
- Uninstall Android Auto.
- Reboot your phone.
- Install the latest Android Auto from Play Store.
After reinstall, open Android Auto once in the background (even without connecting) if the phone prompts for permissions. Then connect to test navigation.
When the crash is caused by Android Auto settings
Some Android Auto settings change which UI pipeline Google Maps uses. If your crash happens only when a certain setting is enabled, you can isolate the trigger quickly.
Disable developer or experimental settings (if present)
If you enabled any Android Auto experimental features, disable them and test again. Regressions often appear first in experimental paths.

Go to Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Permissions. Ensure location permission is granted and is not restricted unexpectedly after an update. Then check Android Auto permissions as well.
Wireless vs wired test
If the crash happens with wireless Android Auto, test wired. If it only crashes wired, test wireless. This helps confirm whether the issue is tied to the projection channel.
Advanced workaround: test with a different phone setup
If you have access to another Android device (or another user’s phone with permission), a controlled test can confirm whether the issue is phone-specific or app-track specific.

Try these A/B tests
- A/B 1: Same car/head unit + same cable, but a different phone running stable Maps.
- A/B 2: Same phone, but stable Maps instead of beta.
- A/B 3: Same phone, but disable VPN and background restrictions temporarily.
If stable Maps works instantly under the same conditions, the beta build is the likely break.

Once you’ve confirmed it’s beta-related, you’ll get faster results by reporting the regression with clear reproduction steps.
What to include in your bug report
- Phone model (e.g., Pixel 8, Samsung Galaxy S24)
- Android version (e.g., Android 14)
- Android Auto version (Play Store number)
- Google Maps beta build number
- Connection type: wired or wireless
- Exact moment it crashes: app launch, starting navigation, switching routes, search, etc.
Where to report
Use the Google Maps app feedback option and attach your details. If you’re in the beta program, submit feedback from the Google Maps beta channel as well so it reaches the right team.
Common mistakes that keep the crash coming back
- Leaving beta enabled after you try fixes—your next Maps auto-update may reintroduce the same crash.
- Clearing only Android Auto cache while staying on the broken Maps beta build.
- Skipping version checks—you may “fix” the wrong component and still be exposed to the incompatibility.
- Using multiple navigation apps simultaneously (some setups will fight for audio focus and UI session control).
FAQ
Will clearing Google Maps data fix the crash?
Sometimes. Clear cache first. If the crash persists, clearing data can remove corrupted local integration state. After that, test navigation again in Android Auto.
How do I confirm I’m not on beta anymore?
Open the Google Maps Play Store listing. If the beta toggle shows you’re not enrolled and the installed build label matches stable, you’re good. Also watch for whether Play Store offers a beta “Update.”
Android Auto crashes when I start navigation, but Maps works normally on my phone. What does that mean?
That strongly points to an integration issue between the Maps build and Android Auto’s projection flow. Roll back to stable Maps first; then clear caches for Android Auto.
Is wired vs wireless likely to matter?
Yes. Different projection paths can trigger different UI behavior. Try both to isolate whether the crash is specific to wireless casting or to the Maps/Android Auto integration itself.
My issue started after updating Android Auto, not Maps beta. What should I do?
Check Android Auto release timing. If Maps is stable but Android Auto updated recently, clearing Android Auto cache/data and verifying permissions is the fastest path. If the crash started the same day as Maps beta updated, prioritize rolling back Maps.
Bottom Line
When Google Maps latest beta is crashing on Android Auto, the most reliable fix is to leave the beta and switch back to stable—then clear cache (or data) if remnants persist. If you do the steps in this order, you’ll restore stable navigation quickly without guesswork.
If you still see the crash after rolling back, use the A/B tests (wired vs wireless, stable vs beta) and submit a detailed feedback report with versions and build numbers so the regression gets corrected.
