Google Maps Fuel-Efficient Routes vs. Fastest Routes: Which Should You Choose?

Choose the fastest Google Maps route when time is critical; choose the efficient route when its arrival time is acceptable and estimated energy savings matter more.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the fastest route when arriving as soon as possible matters most. Choose the fuel- or energy-efficient route when its arrival time works for you and reducing estimated vehicle energy use is worth the trade-off. Google Maps may show both options when efficient routing is enabled and more than one route is available.

What the two route choices mean

The fastest route prioritizes getting you to your destination sooner, based on the route and traffic information available to Maps. The fuel- or energy-efficient route is the option Maps estimates will use less fuel or energy for the configured vehicle. Google also describes the more efficient option as producing lower CO₂e emissions.

These labels describe estimates, not guarantees. Your actual consumption and arrival time can differ with your vehicle, driving style, traffic, and conditions on the day. Maps bases its efficiency estimate partly on regional average vehicle consumption and route characteristics, rather than measuring the fuel or battery use of your particular car during the trip.

Think of the two choices as answering different questions. The fastest route is for the driver asking, “Which available option is expected to get me there sooner?” The efficient route is for the driver asking, “Which option is estimated to use less vehicle energy, if its timing works for me?” Neither label, by itself, settles what matters most to you on a specific journey.

The efficient route is not necessarily the shortest route, and the fastest route is not automatically the one with the least estimated fuel or energy use. Maps considers route characteristics, not just distance. Two paths can differ in hill steepness, stop-and-go traffic patterns, or road type, all of which Google identifies as factors in the efficiency estimate.

How to decide which route to take

Choose this route When it fits What to weigh
Fastest Arriving sooner is the priority, or the efficient route adds more time than you are willing to accept. Compare the displayed arrival times and consider how important the time difference is for this trip.
Fuel- or energy-efficient Its arrival time is acceptable and you want to reduce estimated vehicle energy use. Compare the relative savings Maps displays with the additional travel time, if any.

Maps’ recommendation balances estimated efficiency with arrival time. It recommends the efficient option when its arrival time is roughly the same as the fastest route. When the time increase is significant or the estimated savings are small, Maps shows relative savings to help you compare. Google does not publish a fixed savings percentage or a universal number of extra minutes that should determine the choice.

In practical terms, use your own cutoff: if a modest time difference is acceptable, the efficient route may suit you; if you need to arrive by a particular time, favor the fastest route. Do not assume the green-leaf route is always the fastest, or that a longer route will necessarily save a particular amount of fuel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful way to make the call is to read the route cards together rather than focusing on a single symbol. Start with the estimated arrival-time difference. Then look for any relative fuel or energy savings Maps displays. Ask whether the potential saving is meaningful enough to justify the additional time for this trip, given your schedule. If time is tight, the fastest option may be the right practical choice even when Maps identifies another route as more efficient. If the arrival times are close enough for your needs, choosing the efficient option aligns with reducing estimated consumption and CO₂e emissions.

There is no universal “worth it” threshold because the importance of a few extra minutes depends on the journey and your schedule, while Maps does not publish a single savings figure that applies to every trip. A route comparison is most useful when you can see both a time difference and relative savings. If one or both are not shown, avoid assuming that the efficient route is dramatically better or that an apparent difference will translate directly into a particular amount of fuel saved.

Turn efficient routing on or off

To let Maps consider efficiency when recommending routes, open the app and go to Profile picture or initial → Settings → Navigation → Route options. Turn Prefer fuel-efficient routes on or off. After requesting directions, the route’s Options menu may also provide access to the setting and vehicle choice.

When the preference is on, Maps considers efficiency along with real-time traffic, route simplicity, and road conditions. When it is off, fuel or energy efficiency is not factored into route recommendations. Maps may still mark the most efficient available alternative with a green leaf based on the selected engine type; that marker does not mean efficiency was used to choose the recommended route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters if you see a leaf while the preference is off. The marker identifies the most efficient available alternative for the selected engine type; it does not mean the app used efficiency as a factor in its route recommendation. Conversely, turning the preference on means efficiency is considered alongside other factors, not that every trip will necessarily show two routes or that the efficient option will always be selected as the recommendation.

Menu labels and availability can vary by region and app version. The feature is available only in select regions, and Google’s help information does not enumerate them. If the option is missing, check whether it is available in your location and app.

To compare the options, request directions after confirming the setting. Google describes the display of both the fastest and most efficient choices as applying when the feature is enabled and multiple routes are available. If there is only one route shown, that does not provide a two-option comparison for that trip. The setting changes how efficiency is considered, but it does not guarantee that Maps will always present separate alternatives.

Set the vehicle type before comparing

Maps’ estimate changes according to engine type, so use the closest match to the vehicle you will drive. In the app, open Settings → Your vehicles and select an engine type. Google lists gas or petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric. Its help instructions map CNG and LPG vehicles to the gas option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • No engine type selected: Maps defaults to gas or petrol, which Google describes as the most common type in most countries and regions.
  • Motorcycles: Google says the currently supported engine type is gas or petrol only.
  • Diesel: Google says diesel’s relative economy advantage is generally greatest on highways.
  • Hybrids and EVs: Google says they tend to benefit more in stop-and-go city driving and on hills, where regenerative braking can help.

Those are general patterns, not a prediction that a particular vehicle will use less energy on every route. A mismatch between your vehicle and the selected profile can make route comparisons less useful.

Check the vehicle choice before comparing routes, especially if the car profile has never been set or if you are using a different vehicle from the one you normally drive. With no engine type selected, the default is gas or petrol. That default may be convenient for many drivers, but it will not match every vehicle. A diesel, hybrid, or electric vehicle should be set to the corresponding option where available; Google’s instructions place CNG and LPG under gas.

Engine type affects how Maps estimates relative efficiency, so the green leaf and route comparisons should be understood in relation to the selected profile. The same trip may be evaluated differently for different engine types. Google’s general guidance says diesel’s relative economy advantage is greatest on highways, while hybrids and EVs tend to benefit more in stop-and-go city driving and on hills where regenerative braking can help. These are broad tendencies, not a promise about an individual model or a fixed outcome on a particular road.

For motorcycles, Google currently lists only gas or petrol as a supported engine type. If the available choices do not precisely describe your vehicle, choose the closest supported match rather than treating the estimate as a vehicle-specific measurement. The important point is to avoid comparing routes with a profile that plainly does not represent the vehicle you will drive.

What goes into the efficiency estimate

Google identifies several inputs to its estimate: regional average vehicle consumption, the steepness of hills along the route, stop-and-go traffic patterns, and road types such as local roads and highways. Google says the calculation draws on insights from the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

These inputs help explain why the efficient route can differ from the fastest one. A route with different hills, traffic flow, or road types may have a different estimated energy use even if it takes longer. The estimate is most useful as a comparison between the displayed routes for your configured vehicle—not as a measured result for your exact car, load, speed, or driving habits.

For example, a route that passes through stop-and-go traffic may be assessed differently from one that uses more highway, and a route with different hills may affect estimated consumption. Google’s engine-type guidance adds another layer: the relative economy comparison can vary between diesel, hybrid, and electric profiles. This is why a single rule such as “the longer route always wastes more” or “the highway is always more efficient” is not supported by the route labels alone.

The calculation uses regional averages and route-level factors. It cannot know from the comparison alone exactly how your particular car will perform, how you will drive, or how conditions will unfold during your trip. Nor does the label mean Maps has measured energy use on your vehicle as you travel. Treat the estimate as a way to compare available options under the configured profile, while keeping the uncertainty in mind.

Google notes that the more efficient route is associated with lower fuel or energy use and lower CO₂e emissions. That describes the estimated direction of the comparison, not a guaranteed amount of energy or emissions saved. The reviewed Google Maps Help guidance does not provide a named savings statistic, percentage, or universal time threshold that can be applied to every journey.

How to compare routes for a real trip

  1. Check the vehicle profile. Confirm that Settings → Your vehicles reflects the vehicle and engine type you are using.
  2. Enable the preference if you want efficiency to influence recommendations. Use Settings → Navigation → Route options → Prefer fuel-efficient routes.
  3. Request directions and compare the displayed options. When multiple routes are available, look at the arrival-time difference and any relative fuel or energy savings shown.
  4. Apply your priority for that trip. Select the fastest route if arrival time is more important; select the efficient route if its timing is acceptable and estimated energy use matters more.
  5. Plan separately for EV charging. An energy-efficient route does not include charging stops, so account for charging needs yourself.

If Maps shows only one route, there may not be multiple options to compare for that journey. The ability to see both the fastest and most efficient choices depends on the feature being enabled and multiple routes being available.

It helps to make the comparison in order. First, verify that the vehicle profile is appropriate. Second, make sure the efficient-routing preference is on if you want efficiency to influence recommendations. Third, request directions and compare only the options Maps actually shows: note the arrival-time difference and relative savings when displayed. Finally, choose according to the trip’s priority instead of assuming one route type is always superior.

If you are heading to an appointment or have a firm arrival time, the arrival-time estimate may carry more weight than a possible efficiency advantage. If your schedule allows flexibility, the more efficient option may be attractive when the additional time is acceptable. The app’s comparison is a decision aid; it does not make that trade-off on your behalf or establish a fixed threshold for every driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also distinguish between “the feature is on” and “there are alternatives to compare.” Enabling the preference lets Maps consider efficiency, but both choices may be displayed only when multiple routes are available. When there is just one route, you cannot make a direct fastest-versus-efficient comparison from two displayed options. Do not infer from the absence of a second route that the only displayed route is necessarily the lowest-energy choice or that there would be no alternative under different conditions.

Important EV limitation

Google states: “Energy-efficient routes for EVs don’t include stops to charge.” An efficient-route estimate therefore does not tell you whether a trip has adequate charging opportunities or include charging time in the route choice. EV drivers should check the trip’s charging needs independently rather than treating the displayed arrival time as a complete charging-aware itinerary.

This is a specific limitation of the efficient-route comparison, not a minor detail to overlook when planning a trip that depends on charging. An energy-efficient route may help compare estimated vehicle energy use, but it does not add charging stops to the route. The route’s displayed arrival time should not be read as including time for a charging stop that is not included. Consider charging needs separately when deciding whether the trip plan is workable.

For an EV driver, the decision therefore has two parts: choose between the displayed route options based on time and estimated energy use, then independently account for charging. Google’s help guidance does not say that efficient routing includes charging stops; it explicitly says it does not. Do not assume that choosing the efficient route also creates a charging-aware itinerary.

What Maps’ recommendation can—and cannot—settle

The recommendation is a decision aid: it brings estimated efficiency and route conditions into the comparison with travel time. It cannot establish your exact fuel use, battery consumption, emissions, or arrival time in advance. Regional average consumption and changing traffic are among the reasons the realized result may differ.

There is no universal rule that the efficient route is worth taking whenever it saves fuel, or that the fastest route is always the sensible choice. Compare the values Maps actually presents for your trip, then decide whether the time difference is acceptable for your schedule. If there are no displayed savings or route alternatives, the available information may not support a meaningful efficiency-versus-time trade-off.

In short, choose the fastest route when the value of arriving sooner outweighs the estimated efficiency benefit. Choose the efficient route when its arrival time fits your plans and you prefer the lower estimated fuel or energy use. Before making either choice, make sure the app is using the right engine type and remember that the estimate reflects regional averages and route characteristics, not a promise about your individual vehicle.

Google’s official guidance describes the feature and its limits in Google Maps Help, “Use eco-friendly routes on your Google Maps app – iPhone & iPad,” accessed October 13, 2026. It notes that availability is limited to select regions, without listing them in the reviewed help page; check in your app if local availability matters to your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a fuel-efficient route always slower than the fastest route?

No. Google says Maps recommends the efficient option when its arrival time is roughly the same as the fastest route. When the efficient route takes significantly longer, Maps can show relative savings so you can weigh the trade-off. The guidance does not set a universal time difference.

Does the green leaf mean Maps recommended the fastest route?

No. The leaf marks the most efficient available alternative based on the selected engine type. If Prefer fuel-efficient routes is off, efficiency is not factored into the route recommendation, even though Maps may still show the leaf.

Why can’t I see both the fastest and fuel-efficient routes?

Google describes both choices being shown when efficient routing is enabled and multiple routes are available. If only one route is shown, there may be no alternatives to compare for that trip. Feature availability and menu wording can also vary by region and app version.

Does Google Maps tell me exactly how much fuel I will save?

It can display relative savings to help compare routes, but the estimate is not a measured result for your particular car or driving style. Google’s guidance does not give a universal savings percentage or promise a fixed amount for every trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What vehicle type should I select in Google Maps?

Choose the closest available engine type for the vehicle you will drive: gas or petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric. Google maps CNG and LPG to gas in its instructions. If no type is selected, Maps defaults to gas or petrol; for motorcycles, Google currently lists gas or petrol only.

Do efficient routes for electric vehicles include charging stops?

No. Google says, “Energy-efficient routes for EVs don’t include stops to charge.” EV drivers should plan charging needs separately and should not treat the route’s arrival time as a charging-aware itinerary.

Where do I turn on Prefer fuel-efficient routes?

In the Google Maps app, go to Profile picture or initial → Settings → Navigation → Route options, then turn Prefer fuel-efficient routes on. After directions are loaded, the route’s Options menu may also expose the setting. Exact wording and availability can vary.

What factors affect Google Maps’ efficiency estimate?

Google lists regional average vehicle consumption, hill steepness, stop-and-go traffic patterns, and road types such as local roads and highways. It says the calculation draws on insights from the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the fastest route when getting there sooner matters most. Choose the fuel- or energy-efficient route when its arrival time is acceptable and reducing estimated vehicle energy use matters more. Check your engine type, compare the displayed time and relative savings, and plan EV charging separately—the efficient route does not include charging stops.
