First identify what disappeared: a visit or route in Timeline, a Maps search or directions history item, a saved place or list, or a My Maps map. These are separate types of Google Maps data and use different controls. Then check that you’re viewing the right Google Account and device; the same account may not have the same Timeline data on every device.
Start by identifying the missing data
- A visit or route from a particular day: Check Timeline in the Google Maps mobile app.
- A search or other Maps activity: Check Maps history and its activity controls.
- A saved place, list, or label: Look in the Maps app’s personal-content area, and verify the account.
- A map you created: Check My Maps and the account you used to create it.
Google’s help pages describe these as distinct categories: deleting Maps history does not delete Timeline visits, saved lists or labels, reviews, photos, edits, or feedback reports. Google Maps Help: Manage your Maps history

If Timeline visits or routes disappeared
Timeline is optional and records visits and routes only when it has been turned on. Google says it is off by default. Its current help describes Timeline data as saved on signed-in devices, so confirm the account and device before assuming the data was deleted. Google Maps Help: How Google keeps your Timeline data private
- Confirm the account: In the Google Maps mobile app, check the profile image and make sure the selected Google Account is the one that recorded the visits.
- Open Timeline: In Maps, tap the profile image, then Your Timeline. Check the relevant date and whether Timeline is on. Google’s current instructions are for Android; labels and settings may vary while Google updates its Search services settings. Google Maps Help: Manage your Google Maps Timeline — Android
- Check other eligible devices: If you used Timeline on another device, check it while signed in to the same account. Google says Timeline data may still be saved on other eligible devices unless you delete all your data. Google Account Help: Manage your Timeline data
- Look for an existing backup: In Timeline settings, check whether backup is available and whether a backup copy exists. If it does, Google’s Android instructions explain how to import it on another device. Backup is optional, and Google says changes can take a few days to appear in a backup. Google Maps Help: Manage your Google Maps Timeline — Android
A backup can help only if a usable copy was created before the data went missing. Google says Timeline deletion is permanent; if the data was deleted and no copy remains on another eligible device or in a backup, the documented recovery options do not provide a way to recreate it. If Maps search or activity history is missing
Check Maps history and the related My Activity controls for the account you’re using. This history is separate from Timeline: removing Maps history does not itself remove Timeline visits or saved places and lists. Google Maps Help: Manage your Maps history
Also distinguish “not visible in Maps history” from “no location or activity data exists anywhere in the account.” Google says other location or activity data may remain depending on settings such as Search Services History or Web & App Activity. That does not restore Timeline data that was deleted. Google Account Help: Manage your Timeline data

If a saved place, list, label, or My Maps map is missing
Check the Maps app’s personal-content area and verify the account used to save or create the item. Google’s Android help explains where to find places and lists in the You tab. These items are not restored by importing a Timeline backup. Google Maps Help: Find your places & lists in the You tab — Android

If a saved place or list still does not appear after checking the account and the relevant Maps section, the cited help pages do not establish a general recovery method for that specific case. Avoid treating Timeline controls as a fix for missing saved content.

Keep a recovery option for future Timeline changes
Timeline and Timeline backup are separate opt-in controls. If you want a recoverable copy for use on another device, turn on backup in Timeline settings and verify that a backup is present. Enabling it now does not recreate Timeline data that was already permanently deleted without another surviving copy. Google Maps Help: Manage your Google Maps Timeline — Android
