Google Maps’ Ask Maps: A New Way to Find Places with Gemini

Ask Maps lets users describe place needs in natural language and see recommendations on a customized map. Here’s how it works, its announced rollout, and its limits.

Google’s Ask Maps feature lets you describe what you need in everyday language and get recommendations on a customized map. It is designed for searches with several real-world constraints—such as finding a place to charge your phone without joining a long coffee line—but Google has not published a general response-time or search-time-savings measure. The “solved my biggest search frustration in seconds” claim is therefore best treated as a personal experience, not a verified result for every user or query.

What Ask Maps does

Ask Maps is a conversational place-discovery feature in Google Maps powered by Gemini. Instead of entering a short category such as “coffee” or “tennis court,” you can describe the situation and preferences behind your search. Google says it uses its information about more than 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors to generate recommendations. Those are figures Google reported; they do not establish that results are complete, current, or accurate for a particular query or location. Google’s Ask Maps announcement

How to ask for a useful recommendation

Give the request the constraints that matter: what you need, where or when you need it, and any preferences the result should satisfy. For example:

  • “Where can I charge my phone without waiting in a long coffee line?”
  • “Is there a public tennis court with lights that I can play at tonight?”
  • “Where can our group meet that is convenient for everyone and has the kind of food we like?”

The first two examples reflect prompts Google gave when it announced Ask Maps. The more clearly a request describes the practical need, the more directly the feature can look for places that fit it; that does not guarantee a suitable result.

What happens after the answer

Ask Maps pairs its conversational response with a customized map. Google says users can follow up by getting directions, saving places to a list, sharing them with friends, or booking restaurant reservations where that option is available. The basic flow is thus a natural-language request followed by map-based recommendations and a next action—not a published promise of faster or more accurate search than conventional Maps queries.

How it differs from a conventional Maps search

Workflow Conventional place search Ask Maps
How you ask Usually a place name or category, such as “coffee” or “tennis court.” A conversational request that can include multiple needs or preferences.
What you see Place-search results in Maps. A conversational answer alongside a customized map.
Personalization Depends on the information and settings used by Maps. May draw on account activity and saved information when available and enabled.
What you can do next Open a place or start navigation. Open or navigate to a place, save or share it, and book where supported.

These are differences in workflow, not evidence from a controlled comparison. Google has not published an Ask Maps benchmark for response speed, recommendation accuracy, or user satisfaction.

Availability: what Google announced

In its March 12, 2026 announcement, Google said Ask Maps was beginning to roll out in the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop access planned for later. That announcement describes the rollout at that time; it is not a definitive list of current eligibility by account, language, or device, nor a guarantee that the feature is available to every user in those markets. Ask Maps is not the same as every Gemini feature in Maps

Google has described other Gemini-powered Maps experiences separately. A November 5, 2025 announcement covered hands-free conversational driving tasks, including finding places along a route, checking EV chargers, asking about parking, and reporting road incidents by voice. It also described landmark-based directions and a camera/Lens experience for asking about visible places. These features have their own surfaces and rollout details; they should not be assumed to be part of Ask Maps. Google’s announcement on Gemini navigation features

Gemini Apps also has a separate connected experience for finding places and getting directions, with an interactive map and links to open places in Google Maps. Google’s Gemini Apps Help page says that experience does not provide live traffic updates and documents prerequisites for some capabilities, including sign-in and activity settings. For specified features, it lists additional conditions such as being 18 or older, using a personal Google Account, and asking about a place in English. Those requirements apply to the documented Gemini Apps experience, not automatically to Ask Maps in the Google Maps app. Gemini Apps Help: Find places and get directions

Personalization and data controls

Google says Maps AI features may use location data to make responses relevant, subject to settings. Depending on the feature and history settings, location may be stored with interactions. When available and enabled, personalization may use Maps searches and directions, saved lists or labels, reviews, ratings and photos, Search history, connected Google content apps, and prior Ask Maps chats if Maps history is saved. Its Help page also says that Maps AI interactions may be used to improve products; in certain circumstances, trained human reviewers may review data that Google says is disconnected from accounts and processed with tools intended to remove identifying and sensitive information. What “in seconds” can—and cannot—mean

Ask Maps is meant to reduce the effort of translating a multi-part need into place searches and sorting through results. The available Google announcements and Help pages do not establish a standard response time, a measured reduction in search time, or a general accuracy or satisfaction advantage. A headline about solving a personal frustration in seconds is supportable only as an account of an actual individual experience, with the query and context made clear; it should not be read as a guarantee of how quickly the feature will answer anyone else.
