I Gave Up My The Witcher 3 Run to Play Dressmaker—and My Life Is Better for It

I put my The Witcher 3 run on pause and started playing Dressmaker. For me, the switch felt like trading a sprawling adventure for the simple satisfaction of making something, one deliberate step at a time. I came away feeling better—not because a dressmaking game is a cure for anything, but because this was the kind of play I wanted then.

Why I wanted a different kind of play

There are games I love and still don’t feel like opening on a particular evening. That was where I was with The Witcher 3: I had a run underway, but I wanted a change in what I was doing moment to moment. I wasn’t looking for another quest to push through. I wanted to make something.

Dressmaker gave me a clear, tactile-feeling sequence of choices. Its Steam listing describes selecting fabric, arranging and cutting patterns, sewing garments, and adding decorations. The point is not to conquer a map or follow a long chain of objectives; it is to build a dress and decide how it should look.

What kept me at the dressmaking table

Each garment is a chain of small decisions

Choosing fabric sets a direction. Laying out a pattern turns that idea into a shape; cutting and sewing carry it forward; decoration gives the finished piece its last bit of character. The official Steam listing also describes making custom dresses for townsfolk, as well as displaying and selling pre-made designs.

That loop suited my mood because it kept my attention on the next concrete action. I could focus on a material, a cut, or a finishing detail rather than holding the whole imagined journey in my head. That is my experience, not a claim that the game will feel relaxing or restorative to everyone.

Creative authorship mattered more than scale

What drew me in was the feeling that the finished object reflected a sequence of choices I had made. A commission for a townsfolk character gives the work a purpose; designing a dress gives me room to make it my own. I didn’t need a bigger world or a more consequential story in that moment. I wanted a small project with a visible result.

What Dressmaker is—and what it isn’t

Dressmaker is a released single-player simulation developed by Cozy Lives and published by Free Lives. Steam gives its release date as September 21, 2026. That distinction matters because some earlier coverage, including PC Gamer’s October 3, 2025 article, covered a prototype rather than the later full release.

The Steam page lists Achievements, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, and Steam Deck Playable status. It lists English, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese for interface, audio, and subtitles. Storefront features and compatibility details can change, so check the current listing for the platform and language you need. View Dressmaker on Steam.

Steam Community announcements show that the game received early post-launch patches, including usability improvements and bug fixes. That establishes that updates followed launch; it does not promise any particular future support. Dressmaker’s Steam Community page.

Why I paused The Witcher 3 instead of forcing the comparison

I didn’t give up on The Witcher 3 because Dressmaker proved to be the better game. I wanted different actions and a different scale of attention. In one, I was immersed in a long-running RPG; in the other, the advertised core loop was fabric, patterns, stitching, and decoration. My preference was about what felt right for me at that point, not a verdict on either game’s quality.

Putting the RPG aside also made it easier to enjoy it as something I could return to, rather than a task I had to keep advancing. The more useful question wasn’t which game deserved my time in the abstract. It was what I wanted from the next session.

What this change meant for me

My life wasn’t transformed by a game, and I wouldn’t turn one person’s evening into a wellbeing recommendation. But my play felt better when I stopped insisting that I continue a run just because I had already started it. Dressmaker gave me a focused creative activity and a satisfying sense of completion; taking a break from The Witcher 3 gave me permission to follow that preference.

Games can be worth returning to later. Sometimes the best way to enjoy one is to stop playing it for a while.
