Yes. In May 2024, after bizarre Google AI Overview answers went viral, Google manually disabled the generated summaries for some specific searches. Some affected searches then displayed “An AI Overview is not available for this search.” The action addressed known queries; it did not show that the feature’s broader reliability problems were solved.
What Google removed—and what users saw
AI Overviews are generated summaries shown above or among Google Search results. In late May 2024, shortly after introducing the feature at Google I/O, Google began turning off AI Overviews for individual queries that had produced conspicuously bad answers. Reports described the fallback message as “An AI Overview is not available for this search.” (Gadgets 360; Futurism)
This was a targeted intervention, not an announcement that Google had removed AI Overviews from Search altogether. Nor did Google publish a comprehensive count of the queries it disabled.
What were the bizarre answers?
Glue on pizza
One viral answer suggested using glue to make cheese stick to pizza. Google Search chief Liz Reid later explained that a sarcastic Reddit comment had been taken as useful advice. She noted that forums can offer authentic first-hand information but can also produce misleading recommendations. (Google)

Eating rocks
Another widely shared answer appeared to recommend eating rocks. Google said satire had been treated as factual information in this case. That distinction matters: a search system can retrieve a real page and still produce a false answer if it misunderstands the page’s purpose or tone. (Google)
Other viral claims and screenshots
Coverage also cited an answer falsely claiming Barack Obama was the first Muslim president. However, not every screenshot circulating online was genuine or independently verifiable. Google said some viral examples were fabricated or altered, so a screenshot alone does not establish that Search displayed the answer. Check whether reputable reporting or Google’s own account confirms a particular example before treating it as authentic. (Google; Futurism)

Why did the AI answers fail?
Google described several contributing problems, rather than one single defect:
- Data voids: Some searches had little high-quality information available, leaving weaker material more influential.
- Satire mistaken for fact: The system did not reliably recognize that a source was joking.
- Forum content taken too literally: User-generated posts can be useful, but a sarcastic or low-quality comment is not necessarily sound advice.
- Misinterpreted language: Ambiguous wording can lead a system to answer a different question than the one a user intended.
Google’s stated design principle was that AI Overviews should show information backed by top web results. The incidents showed that having sources does not guarantee that a generated summary accurately interprets them. (Google))

Google said it had made “more than a dozen technical improvements” in response. The measures it described included:
- Improving detection of nonsensical queries that could trigger unreliable answers.
- Reducing reliance on user-generated content when it could produce misleading advice.
- Showing AI Overviews less often when users had not found them helpful.
- Adding stronger safeguards for health and other sensitive subjects.
Reid wrote that Google wanted to explain what had happened and the steps it had taken. Those changes were a response to identified failure modes, not evidence that every misleading answer had been eliminated. (Google)

Did Google fix AI Overviews?
Google disabled summaries for some known problematic searches and announced technical changes, but the available reporting does not establish that the underlying reliability issue was fully solved. Google did not provide an independently verified error-rate percentage or a complete total of manually disabled queries. Sundar Pichai told The Verge that factuality metrics had improved year over year, while acknowledging: “it’s not solved.” (The Verge)
For readers, the practical lesson is to treat an AI Overview as a starting point, not a final authority—especially for health, safety, or other consequential decisions. Open the cited pages, check whether they support the summary, and look for context that could reveal satire, sarcasm, or a dispute between sources.
