Is AI Leaving Conservative Media Behind? What the Evidence Shows

Not yet, at least not according to the available evidence. AI chatbot use for news is growing, including among people who identify as very right-wing, but current data do not show that AI is causing conservative outlets to lose readers or fall behind. Some right-leaning sites have reported traffic declines, while smaller conservative media figures face resource constraints and internal divisions. Those are real pressures, but they are not proof of an AI-driven shift.

Are people using AI instead of news websites?

More people are turning to standalone AI chatbots for news, but the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s 2026 Digital News Report shows that this is still a minority behavior. In its cross-market survey, weekly chatbot use for news rose from 7% to 10% year over year. Just 1% of respondents said chatbots were their main source of news.

That distinction matters: a person may ask a chatbot to explain a story without replacing the publisher that reported it. The survey establishes increased chatbot use, not that readers have stopped visiting news sites or that publishers have lost traffic because of AI.

Chatbot use among very right-wing respondents

In the same 2026 Reuters Institute survey, 15% of respondents who identified as very right-wing said they had used a chatbot for news in the previous week. The figure was 16% among respondents identifying as very left-wing. The report links higher use at the political extremes to greater interest in news; it does not show that either group is abandoning news publishers.

What chatbot users do when they click through

Across 27 markets, chatbot users who clicked through to a source were less likely than people clicking from search or social media to say they wanted more detail. They were relatively more likely to say they wanted to verify a story or learn about its source. These reported motivations describe some users’ reasons for clicking; they do not measure how many visits conservative outlets gained or lost through AI tools.

What do conservative media traffic figures show?

TheRighting reported that every right-wing news website in its February 2026 tracking experienced a year-over-year decline. Its example of Truth Social recorded 18.4 million visits that month, compared with 25.2 million in February 2025, a 27% decrease. These are Similarweb visit estimates, not unique visitors, and they do not identify why visits changed. Truth Social’s figure should not be treated as a measure of all conservative news outlets or of the conservative audience as a whole.

TheRighting notes that event-driven spikes can affect monthly traffic: it reported a large one-day jump around the February 28, 2026 Iran strikes. Its methodology also changed before the period in question: it used Comscore unique visitors before December 2024 and Similarweb visits afterward. That change is important when interpreting longer-term comparisons.

Traffic is not the same as trust or audience share

Measures of visits, unique visitors, audience composition, trust and advertising activity answer different questions. Pew Research Center’s 2025 US survey, for example, found that Newsmax was a regular news source for 15% of Republicans and Republican leaners surveyed, compared with 1% of Democrats and Democratic leaners. The corresponding figures were 12% versus 2% for The Daily Wire and 9% versus 1% for Tucker Carlson Network.

Rank #3

Pew also found that 56% of Republicans and Republican leaners trusted Fox News as a source of news. That is a trust result among the surveyed US population, not a measure of Fox News traffic. Pew describes the political composition of outlets’ audiences; it does not classify each outlet’s content by political lean. Its 2025 question wording also differs from its 2019 survey, so the results should not be treated as a direct time-series comparison with that earlier study.

Could AI search summaries be reducing publisher traffic?

AI chatbots and AI-generated search summaries are different ways of encountering information. The Reuters Institute’s chatbot findings do not measure the effect of search summaries on conservative publishers. It separately reports a decline in organic Google traffic across thousands of sites, but that broad trend is not an AI-only measure and does not isolate conservative outlets.

Index Exchange, an advertising platform, reported an analysis of 1,200 publishers that found news and politics had lower exposure to AI Overviews and a 7% decline in ad requests. The same analysis found that 69% of publishers had year-over-year declines in ad opportunities; some other content categories saw declines of 40% to 50%. These are Index Exchange platform measures, not a representative comparison of conservative publishers, and ad requests or opportunities are not the same as revenue.

Together, these figures offer industry context but do not establish that AI summaries caused a specific conservative publisher to lose traffic, advertising or revenue.

Why might parts of conservative media be under pressure?

AI is only one possible change in how people find information, and the evidence reviewed here does not connect it causally to the traffic declines reported by TheRighting. Other forces can move independently of chatbot adoption:

  • Search and platform distribution: changes in organic search traffic or social-platform reach can affect publishers without being caused by chatbots.
  • News cycles: interest in major events can produce sharp, temporary visit changes, as TheRighting’s account of the February 28 Iran strikes illustrates.
  • Fragmentation and resources: Axios reported in January 2026 that smaller outlets have limited resources and that disputes among prominent conservative media voices can weaken their ability to deliver a unified message.
  • Different fortunes among personalities and shows: Axios also described gains in reach for Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson and some Daily Wire podcasts. That points to a fragmented landscape, not a uniform decline across conservative media.

These explanations are not interchangeable. A website can lose visits while a personality gains an audience on another platform; an outlet can retain trust while its advertising opportunities change. None of those outcomes alone demonstrates that AI is responsible.

What would prove that AI is leaving conservative outlets behind?

A persuasive claim would need outlet-specific evidence connecting exposure to AI answers or summaries with a measurable change in referrals, audience or revenue. It would also need to distinguish AI effects from shifts in search rankings, platform distribution, news interest and other causes. The figures available here do not provide that causal comparison.

Vanessa Otero, founder and CEO of Ad Fontes Media, offered this view in Index Exchange’s article: “When it’s important enough that you want to be accurately and fully informed about some big international, national, or local event, a quality news site is still a much better experience than asking an AI chatbot, which may give a genericized or inaccurate answer.” This is Otero’s assessment, not a comparative test establishing how audiences behave or how AI affects publisher traffic.
