Google is giving people a more direct way to steer Google Discover: a new Lab that uses prompts to adjust what the feed shows. Instead of only tapping topics, you can describe the kind of coverage you want in plain language.
This guide walks you through enabling the Lab (where available), writing prompts that get better results, and fixing the common issues when Discover doesn’t respond the way you expect.

What Google Discover prompt customization is
Google Discover is the personalized feed inside the Google app (and on some devices within Google surfaces). Traditionally, you’ve influenced it by interacting with cards—liking, following topics, and selecting interests.
The new Labs experience adds a prompt-based layer. You provide a short instruction (a “prompt”) describing your preferences, then Google uses that text to reshape the Discover mix—topics, sources, and article themes—closer to your stated intent.

Who this is for (and what it can’t do)
This feature is most useful if you:
- Want tighter control than “tap topics” offers
- Work in a role with shifting priorities (e.g., “research for interviews” → “product updates”)
- Keep getting irrelevant content and want a more direct correction
- Prefer writing instructions rather than hunting for settings
It can’t guarantee that every card will match your prompt. Discover is still a feed: you’ll get a distribution of results, and personalization behavior can take a little time to stabilize.
Prerequisites before you try the Lab
Before you look for the Lab prompt controls, make sure you’re positioned correctly.
Devices and app
You’ll typically need the Google app installed and signed in. Availability of Labs features can vary by region and rollout stage.
- Android: Google app from the Play Store (ensure you’re on the latest version)
- iPhone / iPad: Google app from the App Store (update to the newest version)
Account and personalization settings
Prompt customization works best when Discover personalization is enabled.
- Be logged into your Google account in the Google app
- Use consistent language/locale settings on your device
- Ensure you haven’t disabled Discover personalization features in Google app settings
Rollout reality check
Labs features don’t always appear for everyone immediately. If you don’t see it, update the app and check again later—don’t assume it’s missing permanently.
How to enable Discover Lab and start using prompts
The exact UI labels can differ slightly by platform and app version, but the workflow usually follows the same pattern: open the Discover experience, find Labs, then enter prompts.
- Open the Google app on your Android device or iPhone/iPad.
- Confirm you’re signed in to the correct Google account.
- Go to Settings inside the Google app (often accessible via your profile icon).
- Look for Discover settings.
- Find Labs (or a Labs-related entry) tied to Discover customization.
- Enable the Discover Lab feature if it appears as a toggle.
- Open your Discover feed and find the prompt entry point (it may appear as a button, prompt box, or guided card).
- Enter a prompt, submit it, then wait for the feed to refresh.
If you don’t see Labs at all, try updating the app first, then re-check. Also confirm you’re in a supported region—Labs rollouts are commonly staged.

Prompt patterns that work (with ready-to-copy examples)
Prompts work best when they’re specific about topics, time frame, intent, and “what to avoid.” You’ll get better results from clear constraints than from broad desires.
Use one prompt per goal, then iterate after you see the feed shift.

Example prompt:
Show me reliable news and explainers about AI policy and regulation. Focus on the last 30 days.
Add a “why” line if you want a particular angle (e.g., impact on businesses, startups, or consumers).
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Switch to a learning plan style feed
Example prompt:
Give me beginner-friendly tutorials for data analysis and practical guides using Python. Prefer step-by-step articles.
If the feed becomes too technical, revise toward “conceptual overviews” or “real-world examples.”
Plan for a trip with location-based interests
Example prompt:
For my trip to Lisbon, show travel guides, neighborhood recommendations, and realistic itineraries. Include food and public transit tips.
If you start seeing the wrong country context, explicitly mention city and time frame.

Be careful with blanket statements; if you ask to “avoid everything,” Discover may struggle. Prefer targeted constraints (“avoid sensational headlines,” “more sports than politics”).
Follow a career or job-search theme

Show me interviews, hiring trends, and role-specific advice for product management. I want examples from 2024 and 2025.

- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
This is a good approach for time-bounded preferences. If you don’t see enough recent pieces, tighten the recency language.
Keep it local: your language and region
Example prompt:
Prioritize news and updates relevant to the United Kingdom. Use clear English and include local sources.
If you see global content, your device language or region settings may not match what you asked for.
Managing your prompt history and feed consistency
Most prompt-based systems behave more predictably when you treat prompts as “instructions” you revise, not a one-time magic spell.
Use short iteration loops
After you submit a prompt, give the feed time to refresh. Then watch for drift: if the mix is too broad or off-topic, submit a revised prompt that corrects the imbalance.
Prefer changes over piling on conflicts
A common failure mode is stacking contradictory prompts. If you previously asked for “beginner tutorials” and later ask for “advanced research papers,” you may need an explicit clarifier.
- Replace the prompt with a new one when you change direction
- Add constraints rather than adding new unrelated goals
- If you can’t remove old prompts, use the new prompt to override with explicit priorities
Balance prompts with real interactions
Even with Labs prompts, your actions still matter. If you consistently ignore certain content types, you’ll get better personalization by also interacting (e.g., “Not interested” or hiding unwanted stories when that control exists).
Privacy and data handling: what to expect
Prompt-based customization depends on the text you provide. Treat prompts like you’d treat a search query: don’t include passwords, private identifiers, or sensitive information you wouldn’t want associated with your account.
What you should assume
- Your Google account personalizes the Discover feed across devices where you’re signed in
- Prompts are part of your customization intent and may be processed to refine results
- Google typically uses privacy controls inside settings to govern personalization and ad-related signals (availability varies)
Practical privacy checklist
- Don’t paste private data into prompts (addresses, unique IDs, account numbers).
- If you share a device, ensure each user has their own Google account.
- Review Google app privacy and personalization settings if you want tighter control.
Troubleshooting when prompts don’t change Discover
When the feed doesn’t move, the cause is usually one of four things: the prompt isn’t specific enough, the app hasn’t refreshed, personalization is constrained, or Labs isn’t fully available on your account.

1) Confirm you’re using the prompt entry that affects Discover
Labs features can be nested. If you type a prompt somewhere else (like a different AI tool area), it may not affect the Discover feed.
- Return to the Discover prompt UI and re-check that it’s the Discover Lab prompt box
- Submit the prompt and wait for the feed refresh
2) Refresh the feed and wait
Discover updates can lag slightly. Give it time—then open a few new cards to confirm the distribution changes.
- Pull to refresh or restart the Google app
- Try again after a short interval (rather than submitting 10 prompts in 1 minute)
3) Reduce prompt conflict
If your prompt contains many “musts” and “avoid” constraints, the model may not know what to prioritize.
Fix by rewriting the prompt with a single clear goal and 1–2 constraints. Example:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Show tech news about cybersecurity. Avoid celebrity gossip. Prefer explainers over breaking-only headlines.
4) Check personalization controls
If Discover personalization is restricted, prompt guidance may not take effect.
- Open Google app Settings.
- Find Discover or Personalization controls.
- Confirm the options that govern Discover personalization aren’t disabled.
5) Update the Google app
Labs rollout features sometimes require a newer build. Update the Google app and retry.
- Android: Play Store → Google app → Update
- iPhone/iPad: App Store → Google → Update
6) Clear cache carefully (last resort)
If the UI is stuck or you can’t access Labs prompts, clearing app cache can help on Android. On iOS, you typically rely on reinstall rather than cache clearing.

Comparing prompt customization vs. traditional Discover controls
Google Discover already has “learn from you” behaviors. Prompt customization adds a more expressive layer, but it doesn’t replace all traditional controls.

| Method | Best for | Speed | Control level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompts in Discover Lab | Describing intent in plain language, setting topic and tone constraints | Fast to moderate (varies) | High |
| Following topics | Ongoing subject selection (e.g., Sports, Finance, Tech) | Moderate | Medium |
| Card interactions (hide/not interested) | Correcting repetitive irrelevant content | Fast | Medium |
| Search behavior | Training long-term interest signals | Slow to moderate | Medium |
If you’re trying to fix a specific kind of bad feed drift, prompts are great for direction. If a particular source keeps repeating, the fastest fix is usually to hide or mark it irrelevant when the UI offers that option.
Common mistakes that make the feed feel worse
- Being too broad: “Show me better news” rarely gives a measurable target.
- Ignoring time frames: Without recency or date constraints, you may see older-but-popular content.
- Mixing unrelated goals: Combining travel planning, tech news, and health advice in one prompt can dilute results.
- Overcorrecting: If you submit multiple contradictory prompts back-to-back, the feed can thrash for a while.
- Not interacting: Prompts help, but your real engagement signals still guide personalization.
FAQs
Will my Discover prompt settings sync across devices?
Because Discover personalization is tied to your Google account, prompt-based customization can carry across devices where your account is signed in. Exact behavior depends on the feature rollout and your account settings.
Can I remove a prompt or reset Discover back to default?
Labs experiences often let you revise instructions, but reset options vary. Check the Labs/Discover settings for any “reset,” “clear,” or prompt history controls. If no reset exists, you can steer back by submitting a neutral prompt and then using traditional controls (hide/not interested) to rebalance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo prompts change ads in Google products?
Discover is primarily editorial content, but personalization signals across Google services can interact with ad targeting. For exact effects, review your Google account privacy and ad personalization controls.
What happens if I write a prompt that’s vague or contradictory?
Results may become inconsistent, because the system can’t confidently infer priorities. Fix it by rewriting the prompt to include a single primary goal plus 1–2 constraints (topics, tone, recency, or what to avoid).
Why do I still see content I marked as unwanted?
Feeds don’t update instantly, and you may get “holdover” cards in the short term. If unwanted content persists, mark it as irrelevant when the UI allows, then submit a corrective prompt to reinforce the direction.
Bottom Line
Google Discover Lab prompt customization is a practical way to steer your feed with natural language—especially when you want tighter control than topic toggles provide. The fastest results come from clear, single-purpose prompts plus normal feedback via your interactions.
