Start with Google Lens when you have a photo of an unfamiliar electronic device: Lens can return object-related results as well as similar images and pages using the same or a similar image. If your main goal is to find where a particular picture appears online, focus on those matching-page and similar-image results. The workflows overlap—Google documents Lens as its image-search route—and its published materials do not establish that either approach is more accurate at identifying electronics.
How Google Lens and reverse image search differ
“Reverse image search” describes searching with an image rather than text. Google’s current help documentation covers this through image search and Lens-related workflows. Results may identify objects in a picture, show similar images, or link to websites using the image or a similar one. That makes Lens useful both for investigating what a device might be and for tracing an image’s online appearances.
The practical distinction is less about two entirely separate technologies than about your starting point and goal: a live camera view, a saved photo, an image already on a webpage, or an image URL. Lens also lets you add text to refine a search. Google documents these capabilities, but does not publish a head-to-head electronics accuracy comparison or a guaranteed confidence score.
Choose a workflow for your task

Lens can be used with a camera, an image, or a screenshot; Google also documents searching while browsing in Chrome on desktop and using Lens in the Google app. Shopping features vary by country and availability can change. Google announced product details for Android and iOS in select countries, initially including categories such as electronics.

Identify an electronic device from a picture
- Capture useful views. Photograph the whole device in focus. If markings are visible, take closer pictures of its maker label, model text, distinctive ports, buttons, or control layout.
- Search the clearest view. Open Lens and take or upload the image. For a device pictured on a webpage, launch Lens from that image or use the image-URL workflow.
- Refine with text. Add legible brand or model text, or a short description of distinctive features. Google documents adding a description after uploading an image; text can help narrow a broad visual search.
- Compare more than one result. Look for an exact model marking and check whether the proposed device matches visible ports, controls, and other details. A similar-looking product is only a lead.
- Verify the likely match independently. Compare the image and markings with a manufacturer page, manual, or other reliable product information. Treat Lens shopping results as a discovery aid, not proof that the first result is correct.
- Investigate the source image if needed. Use “About this image” where available to see context from other pages and metadata, while remembering that metadata can be added or removed by whoever posts the image.
What Lens results can—and cannot—confirm
A result may help you recognize a product family, locate a visually similar device, or find a page that uses the image. It does not by itself establish an exact model identity. Electronics can look alike while differing in model number, revision, or configuration, so visible labels and independent product documentation matter more than resemblance alone.
Google says Lens product details may include prices across retailers, current deals, product reviews, and where to buy when it identifies a product. Those details are useful for exploring a candidate, but availability varies and a shopping match is not independent confirmation of the device’s identity. Google’s figure of more than 45 billion products in the Shopping Graph was a global offer count reported for March 2024; it is not a count of unique electronics models and says nothing about Lens identification accuracy.

“About this image” can add context about how an image is used or described elsewhere and may show metadata. Google cautions that metadata can be added or removed by the person posting an image. Its statement about identifying AI-generated images applies to images containing an embedded SynthID watermark; it is not a general guarantee that an image is authentic.
