Google Keep Has No Per-Note Password: What the Hidden Android Feature Really Is

Google Keep cannot currently lock an individual note with a password or PIN. The hidden Android feature being discussed concerns lock-screen note taking, not protected notes.

Google Keep does not currently let you put a password or PIN on an individual note. Google’s published Keep help pages describe no such control, and a June 2026 answer from a volunteer Google Docs Editors Community Product Expert said plainly: “It’s not currently possible to lock an individual note in Google Keep.” The “hidden Android feature” people connect to this question is a different thing: reported references to taking notes from the Android lock screen. That could make jotting something down faster. It would not lock the contents of an existing note.

What people are actually asking for

Readers who search this topic usually want a passcode prompt before one specific note opens, separate from the phone’s own lock screen. A question posted in Google’s support community asks, “how do I lock notes so that it requires a passcode to open it,” and another asks for “a option in Google keep notes to lock a individual note.” Both describe the same gap: protection at the level of one note rather than the whole device or account.

What Keep does and does not protect

Keep’s protection depends on your device and Google account. Anyone who can open your unlocked phone, or who can sign in to your Google account, can open your notes. The features Keep documents for Android (widgets, labels, colors, pins, sorting, archiving, and deletion) help you capture and organize notes. None of them adds a separate unlock step to a note.

Google’s Keep privacy guidance says: “The content you save on Keep is private to you, from others, unless you choose to share it.” That sentence describes who can receive access through sharing. It is not an extra lock on each note, and it does not stop someone with access to an unlocked phone or account from reading what is there.

Where the “hidden feature” idea comes from

Android Authority reported finding hidden references in Keep to possible note taking from the Android lock screen. That is secondary reporting, not a Google announcement, and the report said: “An official release timeline remains unknown.” Nothing in that report describes a password, PIN, or biometric check for opening a saved note.

The table below separates the three ideas that tend to get merged in discussions of this topic.

Idea Status in the sources reviewed Protects existing note contents?
Per-note password or PIN in Keep Not described in Google’s Keep Android help. A June 2026 community answer says it is not currently possible. No, because the feature is not available
Lock-screen note taking Reported from hidden references in Keep. Android Authority says no official release timeline is known. No. It is a faster way to create a note, not a way to lock one.
Keep’s privacy default (“private unless you choose to share”) Stated in Google’s Keep privacy guidance. Controls who receives access through sharing. It adds no prompt when you open a note.

The community answer is a volunteer’s statement, not a Google product manager’s or release spokesperson’s, so treat it as the best current answer rather than an official roadmap commitment.

If you need a protected note today

Until a per-note lock exists in an official release, the practical options are about controlling access around the note rather than inside it.

  1. Decide what belongs in Keep. If a note holds account numbers, passwords, or other material you would not want a household member or a lost-phone finder to read, keep it out of Keep for now.
  2. Check your phone’s screen lock. Open Settings and find the screen lock or security section. Labels differ by manufacturer, but a strong PIN, passcode, or biometric lock protects the device as a whole, including Keep.
  3. Review sharing. For any shared note, open its sharing controls and check the collaborators. Collaborators can edit shared notes, so remove anyone who should no longer have access.
  4. If you evaluate another notes app, confirm four things in that app’s own documentation before moving sensitive data: whether individual notes can be locked, what unlocks them, whether content syncs across your devices, and how recovery and sharing work.
  5. Test before you rely on it. Create a throwaway note in any app you are considering, apply its lock, then confirm the prompt appears on each device you use and that you can recover access if you forget the credential.

Sending a request for the feature

Keep includes a route for sending feature feedback from within the app. Describe the use case concretely, such as a note that holds sensitive details on a shared family tablet. The sources reviewed do not say whether a request will be answered or built, so use the feedback route as a signal rather than an expectation of a release date.

Until Google publishes an official change, the honest answer for a Keep user is that a note can be organized, pinned, shared, and deleted, but it cannot be locked on its own.
