Google’s Chrome team says Android support for its Email Verification API starts in Chrome 154. The feature is still an origin trial, so it is experimental and not generally available. It only works when the website, your email provider and your signed-in browser session all take part.
What Chrome’s email verification does
Normally a site that wants to confirm your address emails you a one-time passcode (OTP) or a link. You leave the site, open your mail, and come back. The Email Verification API lets the browser talk to your email provider instead, and confirm that you control the address without that detour.

That update was published October 5, 2026. It says the existing API and protocol stay the same on Android. The user must be signed in to their email provider in the browser.

How the flow works
- You type your email address into a participating site’s form.
- Chrome checks whether the address’s domain advertises an authorized issuer, and whether you have an active session with that issuer.
- If both are true, Chrome can obtain a signed Email Verification Token and bind it to that site and form submission.
- The first time, Chrome asks permission. On Android the prompt appears as a bottom sheet.
- If you allow it, Chrome remembers your choice for that email address across participating sites.
Gmail is named by Google as a participating provider in the origin trial. The documentation does not publish a complete list of providers, so don’t assume your own provider is covered.
When it won’t kick in
Google describes this as a progressive enhancement. The normal confirmation email, code or link remains the fallback in any of these cases:

- The browser doesn’t support the feature.
- The email provider doesn’t support the protocol.
- You have no active session with the provider in that browser.
- Verification fails, or the site hasn’t joined the trial.
So you will still see inbox-based verification on many sites for now.

What it does not prove
The feature verifies that you have an active session with the provider for the submitted address. It does not prove that an email actually reached you. Sites may still want to send a welcome or onboarding message, and they are expected to keep their regular confirmation path available.

Where to control it on Android
Open Chrome and go to Settings > Addresses and more > Verified Email. From there you can manage individual verified addresses or turn the feature off.
What’s unknown
Google’s official pages give no figures on adoption, error rates or time saved, so any claim about how much faster it is would be unsupported. The feature is also separate from Chrome’s general autofill for forms, which fills in saved details and is a different mechanism from verifying that you control an address.

How it compares with codes and links
| Question | Email OTP or link | Chrome Email Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves the site? | Yes, you go to your inbox | No, when the flow succeeds |
| Needs a signed-in provider session in the browser? | No | Yes |
| Provider support needed? | Any provider that receives mail | Yes; Gmail confirmed, full list not published |
| User prompt | None beyond entering the code | One-time permission, remembered per address |
| Fallback | Not applicable | Normal code or link |
The Bottom Line
If you use Gmail in Chrome 154 or later on Android and stay signed in, some sign-ups may stop sending you to your inbox. Because it is an origin trial, treat it as an early, optional convenience and expect the old code-or-link flow elsewhere.
