“Google Home won’t connect to my phone” can mean the app cannot find a speaker, setup pairing fails, or a speaker that used to work is offline after a Wi-Fi change. The fix depends on which symptom you have: first check the phone’s setup settings, then the speaker’s setup network, and finally the home Wi-Fi.
First identify what is not connecting
- The speaker is missing in Google Home: focus on power, setup mode, phone permissions, and whether the phone can see the speaker’s temporary Wi-Fi network.
- The speaker appears but setup fails: check Bluetooth, the phone’s Wi-Fi and cellular settings, permissions, and the Wi-Fi password.
- A previously working speaker is offline: check whether its Wi-Fi name, password, router, or internet provider changed.
- The speaker still responds to voice commands: Google says this indicates the device is connected to Wi-Fi, so the issue may be app discovery or phone access rather than the speaker’s Wi-Fi connection. See Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Check the phone and Google Home app
- Update Google Home. Google’s current setup guidance lists Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later for a setup phone or tablet. Requirements can change, so check the current Google Home app setup requirements if your device is older.
- Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network the speaker should use. During setup, turn Bluetooth on, disconnect other Bluetooth devices, and turn cellular data off. Google recommends these checks in its speaker and display setup instructions.
- Allow local-network access on iPhone or iPad. For iOS 14 or later, open iOS Settings and allow Local Network access for Google Home. Without that permission, the app may not discover devices on the local network.
- Restart the app and phone. Force-close Google Home, reopen it, and try setup again. If the problem remains, restart the phone or try another supported phone or tablet.
If Google Home cannot find the speaker
- Check power and setup mode. Plug the speaker directly into power and confirm it is ready for setup. Power-cycle it, toggle the phone’s Wi-Fi off and back on, then force-close and reopen Google Home. Follow Google’s device discovery troubleshooting if it still does not appear.
- Move the phone close to the speaker. Google specifies a distance of 15–20 feet (4–6 m) between the phone and speaker when connecting to the speaker’s setup hotspot.
- Look for the speaker’s temporary Wi-Fi network. In the phone’s Wi-Fi settings, check for a network named
GoogleHomeXXXX. A speaker that was set up before but has lost its Wi-Fi connection may instead appear under its assigned device name. If you see it, connect to that network, return to Google Home, and continue setup. Google describes this option in its Android device discovery steps.
If setup finds the speaker but pairing fails
- Confirm the phone is on the Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to use; keep Bluetooth on, disconnect other Bluetooth devices, and turn cellular data off.
- On iOS 14 or later, confirm Google Home has Local Network permission in iOS Settings.
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully. It is case-sensitive.
- Restart the speaker, phone, and router, then retry setup. If possible, try a second supported phone or tablet to determine whether the problem follows the original phone.
These are Google’s recommended checks for setup and pairing problems; see its setup troubleshooting steps.

If the speaker is offline after a Wi-Fi change
A new Wi-Fi name or password, router, or internet service provider can leave a previously configured speaker unable to join the network. In Google Home, forget the speaker’s saved network and set the speaker up on the new Wi-Fi, following Google’s Wi-Fi change instructions. If the speaker is still responding to voice commands, Google considers it connected to Wi-Fi, so check app discovery and phone permissions before treating it as an offline network device.

Find out whether the home Wi-Fi is the problem
Check the network and router
See whether other devices in the home can connect. If none can, restart the router; if service still fails, check for an internet-provider outage or a recent network-setting change. During speaker setup, Google recommends keeping the speaker about 15–20 feet (4–6 m) from the router, restarting the router and speaker, restarting Google Home, toggling the phone’s Wi-Fi, and trying the password again. If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try each band. Details are in Google’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting.

Use a phone hotspot as a diagnostic test
Temporarily try setting up the speaker on a phone hotspot. If it connects to the hotspot but not to home Wi-Fi, that indicates the speaker can connect to Wi-Fi but cannot connect to the home network; it does not establish that the speaker is broken. Google recommends contacting the network provider in this situation. A hotspot test is diagnostic, not a guarantee that the home network is supported.

A factory reset erases device data and cannot be undone. Do it only after the phone, discovery, and network checks fail, or when Google’s Wi-Fi-change instructions call for it—for example, if forgetting the network produces a “could not communicate” error or network settings cannot be changed in the app. Reset steps vary by model, so use the instructions for your specific speaker or display in Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
