To use spreadsheet rows as Google Forms dropdown choices, you need a separate Apps Script integration; linking a response sheet alone does not make form questions pull options from it.
What “pull data” means in Google Forms
There are two different workflows that can sound like “pulling” data:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Forms to Sheets: Send answers submitted through a form to a linked spreadsheet. This is the native response-destination feature.
- Sheets to Forms: Use values in a spreadsheet as choices in a form question, such as a dropdown. This requires scripting to set the choices; it is not what the response-destination link does.
Google Forms also lets you view responses in Forms, link them to Sheets, or download them as a CSV. Google’s response-management guide describes those options.
Send Google Forms responses to a spreadsheet
Choose a new spreadsheet or an existing one as the form’s response destination. Google says new submissions are stored in the linked spreadsheet. Follow the current interface path:
#1 Best Overall
- Open the form and select the Responses tab.
- Open the response-destination control.
- Choose Create a new spreadsheet or Select existing spreadsheet, then complete the prompts.
Google’s response-destination instructions cover linking and unlinking. If you unlink the destination, new responses stop going to that sheet, but the data already there remains. You can reconnect a destination later.
Manage form and spreadsheet access separately
Collaborators on a form may also have access to a newly created response spreadsheet. However, later changes to form permissions do not automatically synchronize with spreadsheet permissions. Review access to the form and the sheet separately; Google’s response-management guidance also notes the distinction between collaborator access and response-sheet access.

Use spreadsheet values as Google Forms dropdown choices
If your goal is to populate a Google Forms dropdown from Google Sheets, Google documents an Apps Script method for setting a list question’s choices. The ListItem.setChoiceValues(values) method takes an array of strings and sets the question’s visible options. The script must obtain the values from the spreadsheet and run whenever you want the choices updated; those steps are integration work, not an automatic result of linking a response sheet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor example, the general flow is to read the desired spreadsheet values, prepare them as strings, and pass them to the list item’s choice-setting method. The Apps Script ListItem reference documents the method and notes that an empty array causes an exception. Scripts using the method require Forms authorization; see the authorization scopes in its reference. Google’s FormApp reference documents how Apps Script can open or create forms, but a working spreadsheet-to-dropdown setup still needs code to read the sheet and an execution or refresh mechanism.

Plan how choices will refresh
Changing values in the spreadsheet does not, by itself, update the form’s choices through the response-destination feature. Decide how and when the script will run, and handle blank or missing values so it does not pass an empty choices array. The official method establishes how to set choices, not a ready-made refresh schedule or complete sheet-reading script.

| Approach | Data direction | Setup | Update behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linked response spreadsheet | Google Forms to Google Sheets | Choose a new or existing spreadsheet in the form’s Responses tab | New submissions are stored in the linked sheet |
| Spreadsheet-fed choice list | Google Sheets values to Google Forms choices | Use Apps Script to obtain values and set list-item choices; authorize the script | Requires the script to run when choices need refreshing |
For broader data ingestion workflows, Google points to Apps Script and the Sheets API as flexible routes, alongside the linked Forms-to-Sheets response workflow. See Google’s data-ingestion guidance.
