Google fixes Chrome zero-days exploited at Pwn2Own 2024

Pwn2Own 2024 included live exploits targeting Chrome, and Google responded by issuing fixes for the Chrome zero-days that were demonstrated. The important part for users isn’t the contest details—it’s that exploitation in a real browser means you should update promptly.

This guide tells you exactly how to update and verify Chrome across your devices, how to validate the patched build against Google’s security notes, and what to do if you can’t update immediately or if you suspect compromise.

What happened at Pwn2Own 2024 and why it matters for Chrome users

Pwn2Own is a recurring vulnerability competition where researchers attempt to compromise popular products within strict time limits. When a Chrome zero-day is exploited there, it signals that an attacker can achieve something real—typically code execution and then sandbox escape—without a previously known fix.

Google’s patch matters because Chrome is widely deployed across endpoints and cloud-managed fleets. A vulnerability chain that works on one environment can often generalize, so your safest move is to apply the vendor’s stable update and verify the resulting version.

What a Chrome zero-day implies (and what it doesn’t)

A zero-day is a vulnerability unknown to the vendor at the time attackers could use it. In practical terms, that usually means the initial waves of exploitation can hit before many defenders know what to look for.

That said, a zero-day exploited at a competition doesn’t automatically mean mass exploitation is already happening everywhere. It does mean attackers can weaponize techniques quickly once a working chain exists—so patching is still the right priority.

How to confirm you’re protected: version, release channel, and security bulletin checks

Chrome patches land in specific releases. Your job is to ensure you’re on a stable build that includes the fixes Google shipped for the Pwn2Own-related reports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know the moving parts

  • Release channel: Stable is what most people should run. Beta/Dev/Canary may include fixes earlier, but they can also be less predictable.
  • Build number: Chrome versions include a major/minor version and a build identifier. The build is what you map to security notes.
  • Update cadence: Chrome doesn’t update instantly for every device. Some hosts take longer due to policies, scheduled updates, or connectivity.

Where to verify

  • Chrome Help → About Google Chrome for your installed version.
  • Google’s Chrome Security Updates pages for the fixed releases. Look for the entries that mention zero-day exploitation and tie them to the stable version line.
  • Enterprise release notes if you manage Chrome via Google Admin or on-prem policies.

Update Chrome immediately (consumer devices)

For most users, the fastest path is simply to update to the latest stable Chrome build. If you’re on an older version, you may already be exposed to known exploitation chains that were patched after Pwn2Own.

Windows

Chrome on Windows supports background updates, but you may need to trigger a check manually.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right.
  3. Choose Help → About Google Chrome.
  4. Chrome will automatically check for updates. If an update is available, it will download and install.
  5. Click Relaunch to complete.
  6. Reopen About Google Chrome and confirm the version/build changed.

macOS

On macOS, Chrome updates may require relaunch, and enterprise Macs can be policy-restricted.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu → Help → About Google Chrome.
  3. Let Chrome check for updates and install them if offered.
  4. If updates don’t appear, check your system packaging method (for example, the distro’s package manager or Snap store) and apply the latest Chrome stable package.
  5. Recheck About Google Chrome to confirm the build changed.

Android

On Android, Chrome updates come through the Play Store and can be deferred by device settings.

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Chrome.
  3. Tap Update if it’s available.
  4. Wait for the download and install to complete.
  5. Open Chrome → tap three-dot menu → Settings → About Chrome to confirm the version.

iPhone and iPad (iOS)

On iPhone and iPad, Chrome is updated via the App Store and runs on iOS security foundations.

  1. Open App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon (top-right).
  3. Scroll to Available Updates and find Google Chrome.
  4. Tap Update (or Update All).
  5. After installation, open Chrome and check version in its in-app info screen (exact labels can vary by iOS build).

Enterprise and managed environments: policies, rollout, and validation

If you manage endpoints, treat this like an urgent patch cycle. The goal isn’t just to update “most machines”; it’s to get all reachable Chrome installs to a fixed stable build and prove it.

Rollout strategy that works in practice

  • Pick the target build using Google’s Chrome Security Updates entries for the stable release that includes the patched vulnerabilities.
  • Stage rollout (pilot → broad) using your standard change-management window.
  • Enforce update checks on endpoints that are behind schedule (policy-controlled devices often need explicit policy refresh).
  • Validate with endpoint inventory or Chrome version reporting so you can identify stragglers.

Common policy gotchas

  • Frozen versions: Some orgs pin Chrome to reduce variability. If you pinned before the patch, you must unpin for the emergency window.
  • Background update restrictions: Bandwidth caps or scheduled maintenance windows can delay fixes.
  • User-admin separation: If users lack permission, you need IT-managed update delivery, not user-driven updates.

After updating: how to verify the patched state

Updating is necessary, but verification prevents “it updated” from turning into a false sense of security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your Chrome version and build number

Go to About Google Chrome (Windows/macOS/Linux) or the equivalent info screen (Android/iOS). Record the full version shown (including the build segment if present).

Map your version to Google’s security bulletin

Open Google’s Chrome Security Updates page and match your stable release to the patched entries. When the bulletin lists fixes for the reported zero-days, those fixes correspond to specific stable builds.

If your version predates the fixed build, you’re not covered yet—even if Chrome “feels” updated.

Confirm extensions and profiles didn’t reintroduce risk

Even with a patched browser, malicious extensions and compromised profiles can cause account theft or persistence. After updating, audit extensions you didn’t intentionally install.

  • Review chrome://extensions and remove anything you don’t recognize.
  • Check site permissions for risky settings (notifications, popups, redirects).
  • If you use multiple profiles, confirm the primary one didn’t pick up new sign-ins.

Mitigations if you can’t update right now

Sometimes you’re stuck temporarily—offline endpoints, special kiosk images, or app dependencies. Mitigation won’t equal patching, but it can reduce your odds while you arrange updates.

Reduce attack surface in Chrome

  • Disable risky extensions immediately.
  • Limit third-party cookies and consider stricter tracking protection settings.
  • Turn off notifications for unknown sites.

Harden the browser runtime

Chrome security posture varies by OS and configuration. Look for settings that constrain navigation and downloads:

  • Use safer browsing settings (Standard/Enhanced) if offered on your build.
  • Avoid installing unknown software triggered by browser downloads.
  • For managed devices, ensure protective policies are enabled even if auto-updates are paused.

Common failure points and troubleshooting

When patches are urgent, update failures happen. Here are the fastest ways to troubleshoot without guesswork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome won’t update

  • Windows: Restart the machine, then retry Help → About Google Chrome. If updates are blocked by policy, ask IT to verify the policy allows updates.
  • macOS: Confirm macOS has the required security components and check for company-managed constraints in System Settings.
  • Linux: Verify your install method. A distro package and a vendor package can get out of sync; you may need to update via the packaging system you used.
  • Android/iOS: Check Play Store/App Store settings. If updates are restricted to Wi-Fi or deferred, change the update conditions and retry.

Managed devices revert updates

If you update a managed Chrome to a fixed build but it drifts back, it usually means a policy or imaging process is forcing an older version. Check the Chrome version enforcement rules and any scheduled remediation tasks.

Websites still look suspicious after updating

  • Don’t continue logging in on a suspicious session. Close the tab and start a fresh session only after verifying extension and profile integrity.
  • Run a quick extension review and clear suspicious site data for the affected domain.
  • Use your security tooling (EDR, antivirus) to scan for persistence outside the browser.

Vulnerability scanner flags the host again

Scanners sometimes map vulnerabilities to version ranges. If your version didn’t update as expected, verification will reveal it. If it did update, ensure the scanner has a refreshed fingerprint and that it’s referencing Chrome stable, not an older component path.

How to handle potential compromise (quick incident triage)

If you suspect a real compromise (not just concern), treat it like an incident. The goals are containment, evidence preservation, and account safety.

Collect artifacts

  • Record Chrome version/build and the time you updated.
  • Save browser download history and any suspicious URLs you visited.
  • Collect relevant logs from your EDR/AV tools.

Look for browser persistence

  • Check chrome://extensions for newly installed extensions or enabled developer-mode entries.
  • Review site settings (notifications, popups, background sync).
  • Check default search engine changes and unexpected homepage or redirect settings.

Check account/session risk

  • Change passwords for accounts that were logged in around the suspected window.
  • Revoke active sessions from the account security page.
  • Enable stronger authentication methods if you haven’t already (for example, security keys or authenticator apps).

Escalate appropriately

If you’re in an organization, notify your security team with the version evidence and any URLs/extensions involved. For personal cases, run full system scans and consider a clean profile or device recovery if you find persistence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAQs

Do I need to worry if I only use Chrome on one device?

Yes, because attackers often target the environment where exploitation succeeds. If that device is exposed, the risk exists regardless of whether you also use other browsers.

Will updating Chrome protect me immediately?

Updating to the patched stable build is the key protection. However, if a device was compromised already, you may also need to remove persistence and reset sessions.

What if I’m on Chrome Beta or Dev—am I safe?

Beta/Dev/Canary may receive fixes earlier, but they can also include different security tradeoffs. Verification using your exact build number and the security bulletin is the only reliable check.

Does this affect iPhone and iPad too?

Chrome on iPhone and iPad is updated via the App Store. If you’re behind on Chrome there, you can still be exposed to the same class of issues—so update the app.

How do I find my Chrome version fast?

On Windows/macOS/Linux, open About Google Chrome. On Android/iOS, check the in-app About/Version screen (labels vary slightly by build).

Bottom Line

Chrome zero-days demonstrated at Pwn2Own 2024 were patched by Google, and the practical action is straightforward: update Chrome to the latest stable build, then verify your installed version matches the fixed releases in Google’s security notes.

If you can’t update immediately, reduce browser exposure and monitor closely—but plan to patch as soon as possible. The cost of delaying is almost always higher than the effort to update today.
