How Do You Post an Empty Comment on Scratch? A Quick Guide

Scratch lets you leave comments on profiles and project pages, but “empty” isn’t always the same as “blank.” Many fields require at least one character, and Scratch often trims or rejects input that contains nothing printable.

Because of that, the practical question becomes: can you post something that looks empty to other users while still satisfying Scratch’s minimum-content rules? This guide covers the working options, the failure modes, and what to do when Scratch blocks the request.

What Scratch Counts as an “Empty” Comment

On Scratch, a comment box generally won’t accept truly zero characters. Even if the field looks blank, Scratch may run validation like “must contain at least one character” or it may strip whitespace and re-check the result.

So you usually have two cases:

  • Truly blank: 0 characters (this typically fails validation).
  • Visually blank: contains characters that render as nothing (often accepted, depending on Scratch’s sanitization).

Before You Try: Prerequisites and Constraints

Make sure you’re commenting in the right place (profile comments or project comments), and that you have permission to post (for example, you’re logged in and not blocked from messaging/commenting).

#1 Best Overall

Also note two constraints that affect “empty” comments:

  • Input trimming: regular spaces may be removed before validation.
  • Sanitization: invisible Unicode characters may be stripped or converted depending on how Scratch processes comments.

Method 1: Use a Unicode Zero-Width Character (Visually Empty)

This is the most common way people create a comment that appears empty while still being technically “non-empty.” The goal is to use a character that renders with zero width.

Best option: Zero-width space (U+200B)

Try posting a zero-width space. Copy it exactly from below, paste it into Scratch’s comment box, and submit.

  1. Go to the Scratch profile or project page where you want to comment.
  2. Find the comment input field and click inside it.
  3. Paste the zero-width space into the field.
  4. Press the submit/post button (often labeled Comment or Post).

What you should see: the comment box will look blank, but the comment may still be accepted.

Alternative: Non-breaking space (U+00A0)

If zero-width space doesn’t pass validation, try a non-breaking space. It can be treated as meaningful content even when it looks like a normal blank.

  1. Open the same Scratch comment field.
  2. Paste the non-breaking space into the box.
  3. Submit the comment.

If Scratch strips whitespace, this method may still fail. If it works, the posted comment may render as blank or as a subtle spacing artifact depending on the UI.

Method 2: Copy/Paste a Single Character That Looks Blank

Some “invisible” characters behave differently across web apps. Scratch may allow certain Unicode characters but block others. If U+200B fails, try an alternative from a known-good set.

Invisible separators and similar characters

Copy one of these into the comment field, then submit:

  • (zero-width space, U+200B)
  • ‌ (zero-width non-joiner, U+200C)
  • ‍ (zero-width joiner, U+200D)
  1. Paste the character into the Scratch comment box.
  2. Submit the comment.

Expect that at least one of these may work for some Scratch builds, while others get sanitized out.

Method 3: If Scratch Rejects Blank Input, Use a Minimal Visible Placeholder

If Scratch won’t accept any “empty” characters (common when the platform enforces strict sanitization), the only reliable workaround is to submit something minimal that still satisfies validation and moderation checks.

Common placeholders that won’t break the rules

  • Single punctuation: . or !
  • Emoji: 🙂 or 👍
  • Short neutral text: Nice / Cool

Yes, it won’t be “empty,” but it’s the method most likely to post successfully every time.

Troubleshooting: What to Do When Your “Empty” Comment Won’t Post

Scratch’s behavior can change depending on the site version, account status, and how it sanitizes the comment. When it fails, don’t assume your device is the issue—try the fixes below in order.

Scratch won’t submit (button stays disabled or error appears)

  • Try a different invisible character (swap U+200B for U+00A0, U+200C, or U+200D).
  • Remove trailing newlines: if you paste from somewhere that includes line breaks, the app may reject it.
  • Re-paste into the field: click in the input and paste again to ensure the characters didn’t get trimmed.

Your comment shows up as a dot/character anyway

Scratch may be converting unsupported Unicode to a fallback character, or it may be storing content but displaying it with normalization. In that case, the “empty” effect won’t be achievable consistently.

Try a different character type (again: U+200B is your first bet).

Scratch strips the character after posting

That usually means the sanitization step removed “invisible” or “non-standard” input. If you paste an invisible character and it disappears from the displayed comment, switch to a visible minimal placeholder.

You get filtered for “spammy” input

Submitting multiple near-identical empty/invisible comments can trigger moderation or anti-spam measures. If that happens:

  • Stop repeating the attempt.
  • Wait and submit a normal, meaningful comment instead.
  • If you think you were wrongly flagged, consider contacting Scratch support through the official channels.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using regular spaces: these are frequently trimmed and can be treated as “empty.”
  • Copying from a web page that auto-normalizes Unicode: some sites may strip zero-width characters when copying.
  • Pasting rich text instead of plain text: use plain paste if your browser offers it (some editors paste styled content).
  • Assuming behavior is identical across browsers: clipboard and sanitization can differ by browser engine.

FAQs

Can I post a comment that is completely blank on Scratch?

In most cases, no. Scratch typically requires at least one character after trimming/sanitization, so a truly blank input won’t pass validation.

Do invisible characters always work?

No. Scratch can strip or normalize certain Unicode characters. If U+200B doesn’t survive, try U+00A0, U+200C, or U+200D. If none work, use a minimal placeholder.

Will other people see the comment as empty?

If the character survives sanitization and rendering, yes—it may look blank. Some UIs may still show spacing artifacts, cursor behavior, or fallback rendering.

Is it allowed to post “empty” comments?

Scratch moderation rules can vary, and repeated blank/invisible comments may be treated as spam. If you’re unsure, posting a short friendly note is the safest route.

Bottom Line

If you want an “empty” look, try a zero-width space (U+200B) by copying the character and pasting it into the Scratch comment box, then submitting. Scratch may strip invisible input depending on its sanitization rules.

If Scratch rejects the invisible characters, the reliable fix is to post a minimal placeholder (like a period or a simple emoji) so your comment passes validation every time.
