Google Play services version 26.39 reportedly describes two improvements for Google Find Hub network tags: tapping a tag with an NFC-enabled phone to open its details or identify a lost tag, and choosing a category, name, and selected settings during initial registration. The report does not confirm when either change will reach users or which tag models will support the NFC interaction.

What does NFC do on a Google Find Hub tag?

According to 9to5Google’s October 5, 2026 report, text in Google Play services version 26.39 describes using a phone’s NFC to access a Find Hub tag’s details and settings, or identify a lost tag by tapping it. That could make it easier for someone who finds a tag to identify it, without first navigating through the Find Hub app.

The report reproduces this feature description: “With NFC support, you can quickly access Find Hub tag details and settings or identify lost tags when you tap the tag with your phone.” This is reported interface text; it does not establish that the feature is generally available.

How does the new tag registration flow work?

The same report describes a revised first-time setup flow that lets users make more choices while registering a tag, rather than completing pairing and changing those options later in the app.

  • Rename the tag: Set a more recognizable name during setup.
  • Configure selected settings: The report names Left-Behind Reminders as an example.

The reported interface text says these choices can be made “when you first set up your Find Hub network tags.” The practical benefit is fewer follow-up steps after pairing; the report does not specify which settings beyond its example will be included.

Can I tap a lost Find Hub tag with my phone?

That is the interaction described in the version 26.39 feature text, but the report alone is not confirmation that it is available on your phone or with your tag. NFC capability in a phone or tracker should not be treated as proof that it supports this particular Find Hub feature.

Which Find Hub tags support NFC?

The available report does not identify supported models, and Google’s Find Hub compatible-device directory lists compatible trackers without specifying support for this newly reported NFC interaction. A listing therefore confirms Find Hub compatibility as Google represents it, not compatibility with the NFC feature.

Google’s directory includes products such as Chipolo ONE Point, Chipolo CARD Point, Moto Tag, and Pebblebee Clip, Card, and Tag. Those listings should not be read as confirmation that any of these models supports the reported tap-to-access or lost-tag identification feature. Google also cautions that availability, features, and specifications can vary by region, carrier, and device.

There is no confirmed rollout date or model-by-model compatibility list in the report. Before relying on NFC when choosing or using a tracker, look for explicit confirmation for that exact model and region.

How NFC differs from UWB precision finding

NFC is the reported tap-based interaction. It is not the same as UWB precision finding, which helps locate a nearby tracker with more precise guidance. Google says UWB precision finding requires UWB support on both the phone and tag, with UWB enabled; availability and performance vary by model. See Google’s Find Hub guidance for details.

How Find Hub handles offline finding

Separately from the NFC changes, Google documents Find Hub’s offline-finding network as using encrypted recent locations and end-to-end encrypted location information. Google also provides settings that determine whether a device participates in network-based finding. These privacy and participation controls concern the finding network; they do not establish whether the reported NFC features have rolled out.
