Sometimes—but only if a specific plan adds useful protection at a price and under claim terms you can accept. A paid service contract can overlap with the warranty included with a TV or laptop, and it may not be worth the cost if repairs are unlikely or the plan adds no meaningful coverage. Compare the written terms with the included warranty before deciding.
What an extended warranty actually adds
A separately purchased extended warranty, often called a service contract, is a distinct agreement with its own coverage, exclusions and claim rules. It is not automatically an extension of the manufacturer’s included warranty. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes service contracts as optional agreements purchased separately: FTC guidance on extended warranties and service contracts.

Start with the device’s written warranty. Note when it ends, which failures it covers and what remedy it promises. Then read the entire service contract to see when its coverage begins and what it adds. A plan that starts only after the included warranty ends is different from one that overlaps it; account for any duplicated protection when judging the value. There is no reliable universal break-even calculation for TVs or laptops: the available official guidance does not establish device-specific repair probabilities, average repair bills or a standard plan price. Instead, compare the offer across these practical factors.

Incremental coverage
Identify exactly which failures and parts are covered, and whether accidental damage is included. Mechanical or electrical failure and accidental damage are not interchangeable. Do not rely on a sales label: verify the contract’s wording. The FTC advises treating an item as uncovered if the contract does not list it.
Total cost and limits
Compare the contract price with the protection period, and add any deductible, per-claim fee, required shipping charge or other cost you would pay to make a claim. Check payout limits and any reimbursement cap; the advertised price alone does not show what a repair could cost you.

Provider and claim process
The company selling the plan may not be the manufacturer. Check which company backs or administers it, who chooses the repairer, where you must send the device, how to file a claim and how long repair or reimbursement may take. Investigate the responsible provider and its complaints before buying.
Your ability to handle a repair bill
Consider whether an unexpected repair or replacement cost would be manageable. The FTC suggests setting aside money in a savings account as an alternative to buying a contract. Compare the plan with saving the same amount for future repairs or replacement.

A decision sequence before you buy
- Read the included warranty. Record its end date, covered problems and promised remedy.
- Read the full service contract. Find its start date, added protections, overlap with the included warranty, exclusions and claim rules.
- Calculate your potential outlay. Add the plan price, deductibles, claim fees, shipping and other required charges; note payout limits.
- Match coverage to your concern. Confirm in writing whether the failure or accidental damage you care about is covered.
- Check the provider and logistics. Establish who handles repairs, where the device goes and how claims or reimbursement work.
- Compare with saving. Decide whether the contract’s coverage and convenience justify its full cost compared with keeping that money for a repair or replacement.
When a plan may make sense
A plan can be worth considering when it adds protection you actually want beyond the included warranty, its total cost and limits are acceptable, and the claim process and provider are credible to you. The FTC’s caution is a useful test: “An extended warranty or service contract might not be worth the cost if a product isn’t likely to need repairs.”
If the contract mostly duplicates existing coverage, excludes the problem you are worried about, or leaves you with substantial fees and limits, its headline price may overstate its value. In that case, declining the plan and reserving the money for repairs is a reasonable choice.
