It accelerates TensorFlow Lite models and works alongside a host computer rather than serving as a general-purpose computer by itself. Coral’s product materials describe versions built into a development board and added to a host through USB.
What does an Edge TPU do?
Inference is the step in which a trained machine-learning model processes new input—such as an image—and produces a result. The Edge TPU is designed to accelerate that step. It is an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), meaning its hardware is specialized for a defined class of tasks rather than intended to replace a computer’s general-purpose processor.

Coral describes the Edge TPU as accelerating TensorFlow Lite models. That does not mean every model or operation automatically runs on the chip: the model and software must be supported, and the host still provides the surrounding computing environment.
How does it fit into a computer?
The product form determines how the accelerator connects to the rest of a system. Coral documents three forms:
#1 Best Overall
- A development board to quickly prototype on-device ML products. Scale from prototype to production with a removable system-on-module (som)
- Performs high-speed ML inferencing: the on-board edge TPU Coprocessor is capable of performing 4 trillion operations (tera-operations) per second (tops), using 0.5 watts for each tops (2 tops per watt). For example, it can execute state-of-the-art mobile vision models such as mobilenet V2 AT 400 FPS, in a power efficient manner
- Provides a complete system: a Single-board computer with SoC plus ML plus wireless connectivity, all on the board running a derivative of Debian Linux We call Mendel, so you can run your favorite Linux tools with this board
- Supports tensorflow Lite: no need to build models from the ground up. Tensorflow Lite models can be compiled to run on the edge TPE
- Supports automl vision edge: easily build and deploy Fast, high-accuracy custom image Classification models to your device with automl vision edge
| Form | How it is integrated | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Coral USB Accelerator | Adds an Edge TPU coprocessor to a separate host computer over USB-C. | The host needs the Edge TPU runtime and API library. See the USB Accelerator datasheet and current setup documentation. |
| Coral Dev Board | Combines an Edge TPU coprocessor with an NXP i.MX 8M system-on-chip, memory, and other components. | It is an embedded development platform, not just an accelerator chip. See the Dev Board datasheet. |
| Coral Accelerator Module | A module intended for integration into a larger system. | Its datasheet block diagram shows PCIe and USB-related signals. See the Accelerator Module documentation. |
In all three cases, the Edge TPU handles supported inference work while other system components handle tasks such as running the operating system, managing input and output, and preparing data.
What do the published performance figures mean?
Coral’s version 1.4 USB Accelerator datasheet (2019) states a peak performance of 4 trillion operations per second (TOPS) at 2 watts, or 2 TOPS per watt. Its version 1.7 Dev Board datasheet (December 2022) also states 4 TOPS at 2 watts. These are vendor-published product specifications, not independent benchmark results.

- Wide Compatibility: Fully compatible with making it easy to integrate into your existing projects
- Rich Interfaces: Providing flexible connectivity for sensors, displays, and motors
- Stable Communication: For stable signal transmission in smart home and IoT applications
- Beginner-Friendly Resources: Comes with a comprehensive user manualand step-by-step tutorials,Technical support and driver downloads are available to help you get started quickly
The Dev Board datasheet gives almost 400 frames per second (FPS) on MobileNet v2 as an example. That figure is specific to the vendor’s cited model and conditions; it is not a general speed promise for every model, input, or application.
Why use inference at the edge?
Running inference on or near the device collecting data can produce local results without sending each input to a cloud service. Coral’s Farmwave case study describes combine-mounted systems that use Raspberry Pi computers and Coral USB Accelerators to process crop images during harvesting, without cloud processing in the described design. It is an example of one deployment, not proof that every edge system has the same needs or outcomes.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Versatile & Flexible – TPU cutting mats make everyday food prep easier. Chop vegetables, slice fruit, prepare meat, then flex the mat to funnel ingredients neatly into bowls or pans.
- Made in South Korea – Crafted from premium TPU for a durable yet flexible cutting surface. Designed to be gentler on knife edges while resisting everyday scratches and wear.
- Mess-Free Food Prep – Textured surfaces help reduce slipping, while integrated juice grooves catch liquids from fruits, vegetables, and meats to help keep countertops cleaner.
- Durable for Everyday Use – Scratch-resistant TPU is designed to handle regular meal prep, though normal cut marks may develop over time. Hand washing is recommended for best results. Top-rack dishwasher safe; air-dry only to help prevent warping.
- Space-Saving – Slim, stackable mats store easily in drawers without taking up valuable kitchen space. Portable, with hanging holes for convenient storage.

What should you check before using one?
- Model support: Confirm that the model and operations you need can run on the Edge TPU; the chip is intended for supported inference workloads, not all machine-learning computing.
- Host and software: For the USB Accelerator, provide a compatible host and install the Edge TPU runtime and API library. Follow the current Coral setup instructions, since software compatibility and setup guidance can change.
- Operating mode and heat: The USB Accelerator datasheet says its maximum clock frequency is twice the reduced setting, with higher inference speed and power consumption. It also warns that the device can become very hot at maximum frequency.
- Compatibility and lifecycle: Check current official documentation for compatibility and support before planning a deployment; historical datasheet specifications do not establish current availability or software support.
