Google DeepMind’s October 15, 2026 walkthrough shows its Antigravity science workbench identifying a plausible antimicrobial-peptide lead from Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae. The lead, UniProt sequence A0A0U0D591, is a 97-amino-acid member of the Lactococcin 972 bacteriocin family. Sequence, structure and genomic-neighborhood evidence support the hypothesis that it belongs to an antibacterial system, but it has not been proved effective in laboratory or clinical use. Google DeepMind says wet-lab validation is still under way.
What Google DeepMind discovered
The walkthrough starts with a narrow biological question: find previously unrecognized antimicrobial peptides in Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae. Antigravity coordinates the investigation across protein databases, structure-prediction resources, genomic context and experimental planning while the biologist remains responsible for scientific decisions.

The workflow highlights candidate A0A0U0D591. ProtNLM first annotates previously uncharacterized UniProt sequences, and the system identifies this sequence as a possible bacteriocin. It is 97 amino acids long and is assigned to the Lactococcin 972 family, a group associated with antibacterial activity.

1. Sequence-level novelty
The researcher sends the sequence through Swiss-Prot with the EMBL-EBI NCBI-BLAST service. The walkthrough reports no meaningful sequence homolog among manually reviewed proteins. That result makes the sequence interesting as a potentially novel candidate, but it does not demonstrate activity: a sequence can lack a close reviewed match and still be inactive, misannotated or difficult to express.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Structural evidence
Antigravity retrieves a prediction from the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database and compares it with experimentally determined protein structures. The predicted fold closely matches an experimentally determined bacteriocin structure. Structural similarity strengthens the family assignment and offers a reason to investigate the peptide experimentally, but a predicted structure is not a substitute for a measured structure or an activity assay.
3. Genomic neighborhood
The surrounding DNA provides an independent line of support. Nearby genes include an ABC-transporter permease, a possible ATP-binding partner, another annotated bacteriocin and an XRE transcriptional regulator. A0A0U0D591 is reported to sit six base pairs upstream of the transporter-permease gene. That arrangement is consistent with a coordinated bacteriocin system, in which a peptide and transport or protection machinery are encoded together.

4. Biological interpretation
Using the combined evidence and literature context, the agent proposes a mechanism involving bacterial cell division and predicts activity against several drug-resistant pathogens. Those are computationally reasoned hypotheses. The walkthrough does not present a completed susceptibility experiment, a confirmed molecular target, animal data or clinical evidence.
What Antigravity contributes
Antigravity is presented as an agentic science workbench rather than a single peptide-prediction model. Its value is coordinating a chain of investigations that would otherwise require manual movement among separate resources and careful documentation of how each result affects the next decision.

| Component | Role in the walkthrough | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|
| ProtNLM | Annotates previously uncharacterized UniProt sequences | Suggests that A0A0U0D591 may belong to a bacteriocin family |
| Swiss-Prot and EMBL-EBI NCBI-BLAST | Checks for meaningful similarity to manually reviewed proteins | Supports sequence novelty when no meaningful reviewed homolog is found |
| AlphaFold Protein Structure Database | Provides a predicted three-dimensional structure for comparison | Shows a fold resembling an experimentally determined bacteriocin |
| Genomic-context analysis | Examines neighboring genes and their spacing | Links the candidate to transporter, regulatory and bacteriocin-related genes |
| Literature and protocol planning | Builds mechanistic hypotheses and proposes experiments | Defines what must be tested rather than proving the hypotheses |
This division of labor matters. The agent connects evidence and drafts next steps, while the scientist sets the question, judges biological plausibility and decides which experiments are justified.
What still has to be tested
Antigravity converts the computational findings into a proposed validation protocol. The plan covers four main areas:

- Protein expression: produce the candidate in an experimental system and determine whether the intended peptide can be obtained in a usable form.
- Antimicrobial susceptibility testing: measure whether the peptide inhibits or kills target organisms under controlled laboratory conditions.
- Target engagement: test whether the proposed cellular target and mechanism are supported by direct experiments.
- In-vitro toxicity testing: assess unwanted effects on relevant non-target cells before any consideration of animal or human use.
Google DeepMind describes the lead and other candidates from the pipeline as undergoing wet-lab validation. The official characterization is deliberately limited: the candidate is biologically plausible and supported by structural and genomic evidence, but it still requires laboratory confirmation.
Is the peptide proven, available or safe to use?
No. A0A0U0D591 is a discovery-stage research candidate, not an approved medicine, a clinically demonstrated antibiotic or a consumer product. The walkthrough does not provide a synthesis vendor, product SKU, price, dosage, regulatory authorization or evidence that the peptide can be safely administered to people or animals.

A laboratory that wants to investigate it would need the exact sequence, an appropriate expression or synthesis method, microbiology facilities, susceptibility assays, controls and toxicity testing. Results would also depend on peptide processing, concentration, stability, salt conditions and the organism tested. Those practical details are reasons to treat the candidate as a starting point for research, not as a treatment that can be bought and used.
Why the work matters—and where the headline can mislead
Antimicrobial resistance is the broader motivation. The walkthrough repeats an estimate that resistance could contribute to 10 million deaths globally each year by 2050, but it does not identify the organization behind that figure. It should therefore be read as unattributed context, not as a newly established statistic from this project.
The stronger conclusion is narrower: Antigravity helped assemble converging computational evidence for one previously uncharacterized peptide and translated that evidence into a testable experimental plan. It did not discover a clinically validated antibiotic. Until expression, susceptibility, target-engagement and toxicity experiments are complete and independently evaluated, the predicted pathogen spectrum and cell-division mechanism remain hypotheses.
