To build an image analyzer with Google Cloud Vision API and Cloud Run, accept and validate an image in an HTTP service, send it to Vision with only the annotations your use case needs, shape the response for your application, and deploy the service to Cloud Run. The design choices that matter most are the image source, annotation feature, access controls, and how request volume relates to Vision quotas and Cloud Run scaling.
How the image-analysis request flows
Keep the responsibilities clear: your application handles intake and validation, Vision performs the selected annotation, and your application turns the API response into a result a person or downstream system can use.

- Receive: accept an upload or an image reference through your HTTP endpoint.
- Validate: check the file type and size before sending it onward. Apply your own authorization and retention rules.
- Choose the source: provide image bytes inline, a Cloud Storage URI, or a publicly accessible URI. Google documents these options in its Vision API request guide; a public URI is unsuitable when the image must remain private.
- Select annotations: request the feature or features that answer the user’s question, rather than enabling every feature by default.
- Call Vision: make an authenticated server-side request and keep credentials out of client code.
- Shape and return: extract useful fields—such as OCR text, labels, confidence values, or object locations—and return a stable response for your application.
The standard REST endpoint is POST https://vision.googleapis.com/v1/images:annotate. Its JSON body contains a requests list; each request identifies an image source and one or more feature types. Multiple feature types can be requested for an image. See Google’s request guide and Vision documentation for the request format and client-library options.

“Image analysis” is not one fixed model or output. Start with the result your application needs, then select the corresponding feature. Google’s feature list describes these annotation types and their outputs.

| Need | Feature | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Read text in an ordinary image | TEXT_DETECTION |
Designed for text in general images, especially sparse text within a larger image. |
| OCR a dense scanned document | DOCUMENT_TEXT_DETECTION |
Provides document-oriented text output. For structured parsing or entity extraction in dense document workflows, Google recommends considering Document AI. |
| Describe general image content | Label detection | Generalized labels with confidence and topicality information. |
| Find objects and where they appear | Object localization | Object labels and normalized bounding polygons. |
| Locate faces | Face detection | Face locations and attributes; it does not identify a specific individual. |
| Assess defined explicit-content categories | SafeSearch | Likelihood ratings for adult, spoof, medical, violence, and racy categories. |
| Recognize a known landmark or logo | Landmark detection or logo detection | Names or descriptions, confidence, and location data as documented. |
| Find web matches or related images | Web detection | Web entities and information about matching images or pages. |
| Get dominant colors or crop suggestions | Image properties or crop hints | Image properties include color information; crop hints can be requested for multiple aspect ratios. |
Do not treat confidence as certainty or return raw API JSON without explaining it. For example, an object-localization result is a label paired with coordinates, while OCR produces text structures; the consuming interface needs to interpret those fields in context.
Decide how images reach Vision
The input method affects privacy, storage, and request handling. Vision supports inline base64 content, a Cloud Storage URI, and a publicly accessible URI; the API documentation does not decide which option fits your organization’s privacy policy.
- Inline image content: useful when the service receives an upload and forwards its bytes. Validate the payload before encoding or sending it, and account for JSON request size as well as image size.
- Cloud Storage URI: useful when images already live in a bucket or when your workflow stores them before analysis. Configure bucket access deliberately and decide how long originals should be retained.
- Public URI: can avoid sending image bytes in the JSON body, but requires the image to be publicly accessible. Do not use it for private or sensitive images unless public access is an intentional, approved choice.
For a first version, an upload endpoint can validate a file and make a server-side Vision call. If analysis is decoupled from the user’s request or involves a large collection, use an appropriate batch workflow rather than assuming that a synchronous HTTP request is the right shape.

Shape an application response
Translate annotations into a response contract your application can maintain. Return only the fields the user or next service needs, and preserve enough structure to make results actionable.
- For OCR, return recognized text and, where relevant, its text hierarchy or location rather than an unexplained nested payload.
- For labels, include the label and its confidence or topicality value if the interface needs to rank or qualify suggestions.
- For localized objects or detected faces, retain the returned polygon or location data so a client can draw overlays against the original image.
- For SafeSearch, present the category likelihoods as ratings, not as a categorical guarantee that content is safe or unsafe.
Validate your own error responses as well: distinguish invalid uploads, authorization failures, Vision API errors, and quota or size failures so clients can respond appropriately.
Deploy the HTTP service on Cloud Run
Cloud Run runs containerized HTTP applications as services and provides a stable service endpoint. Your container must listen for requests on the TCP port supplied in the PORT environment variable; the documented default is 8080. You can deploy a container image or use a source-code deployment flow. Start with Google’s Cloud Run documentation and deployment guide.

- Build the HTTP app: implement upload or image-reference intake, validation, the authenticated Vision request, response shaping, and explicit error handling.
- Prepare the container: ensure the application binds to
PORTrather than assuming a local-only port. - Choose deployment access: decide whether requests should be public or require authentication. Restrict access when the analyzer is not intended for everyone.
- Configure the service: select a region and set the service identity, timeout, concurrency, memory, and scaling limits for the workload.
- Protect credentials: keep secrets out of source code and use a service identity with only the permissions the application needs. Confirm current identity and IAM details in Google Cloud’s deployment guidance.
- Deploy and exercise the endpoint: verify a valid image, an invalid upload, an API error, and the configured access behavior before exposing the service to users.
Plan for quotas, limits, and traffic
Vision quotas are enforced at the Google Cloud project level, independently of how many Cloud Run instances can scale up. The quota page retrieved in 2026 lists 1,800 requests per minute for common Vision request types and 1,800 per-minute feature quotas for label and text detection. It also lists a 20 MB image-file limit, a 10 MB JSON request-object limit, up to 16 images per synchronous images:annotate request, and up to 2,000 images per asynchronous image batch request. These values can change; check the current quota page and your project’s configured quotas before setting production limits. The page distinguishes quota limits from fixed system limits, and some limits apply per image or page rather than per request.
Cloud Run normally autos-scales with demand and scales to zero when there is no traffic. Minimum instances can keep capacity warm at an ongoing resource cost; maximum instances can bound service capacity and help protect backing services. Concurrency, timeout, memory, and scaling settings should reflect the request duration and the capacity available under Vision quotas. Google documents these controls in its scaling guide.

Vision charges are based on billable feature units: each feature applied to an image is a unit, and multi-page files are billed page by page. Google’s pricing page retrieved in 2026 lists the first 1,000 monthly units as free for features in its table. For monthly usage from 1,001 through 5,000,000 units, that page lists $1.50 per 1,000 units for label detection, text detection, document text detection, face detection, landmark detection, logo detection, and image properties; $3.50 for web detection; and $2.25 for object localization. Higher tiers have different rates, and prices may change. Check the current Vision pricing page and applicable currency-specific SKUs before budgeting.

Your full application cost also depends on Cloud Run configuration and traffic, plus any storage and network services in the design. Estimate using your expected image or page volume, the number and type of features per image, and the service’s scaling and resource settings. Google’s Cloud Run billing settings documentation explains the service-side billing options.
Operational checks before launch
- Track request errors and latency in both the HTTP application and its Vision calls.
- Watch project quota use and define behavior for throttling, retries, and overload rather than allowing Cloud Run scaling to overwhelm the downstream API.
- Set upload validation and request limits in the application, consistent with current Vision limits.
- Review access policy for the service, Cloud Storage objects, and credentials; do not expose private images through public URIs by accident.
- Test the chosen feature on representative images, especially where OCR quality, object locations, or content ratings affect user decisions.
- Revisit minimum and maximum instances as traffic changes: warm instances trade cost for startup responsiveness, while instance caps trade peak capacity for bounded load.
Cloud Vision’s label-detection quickstart says its steps take about five minutes and describes a no-charge allowance of up to 5 GB of Cloud Storage and 1,000 Vision feature requests per month. Those are offer details stated on that quickstart page, not a general promise for every account; confirm current eligibility and billing terms on the quickstart page before relying on them.
