Google Chrome’s Extension Menu Makes Website Access Easier to Control

Chrome’s announced extension-menu redesign was meant to surface existing site-access controls, not change permission defaults. Here’s how Chrome Help says to manage access and what’s known about availability.

Google’s announced Chrome extension-menu redesign was intended to make website-access controls easier to find—not to change extension permission defaults. Chrome Help currently describes ways to limit an extension to selected sites, the current site, or access when selected, but Google’s published guidance does not establish that the redesigned menu is available to every Chrome user.

What Google announced

On November 19, 2024, Chrome for Developers author Oliver Dunk announced a test with a small percentage of Canary users. Google said it hoped to expand the feature later. The redesigned menu was meant to show more clearly which extensions could run on a page and let users adjust access per extension, including an option to stop all extensions from running on a particular site. Dunk wrote: “The goal of these changes is to make it easier for users to discover controls that are already available.” Chrome for Developers

Google emphasized that the change did not alter settings or defaults. In particular, host access requested by an extension at installation would still be granted at installation. The announcement described a more visible way to manage access, not a new permission model.

How to manage an extension’s site access

Chrome Help documents controls for changing an extension’s access through the Extensions menu or the extension’s details page. The exact redesigned menu may not appear in every Chrome version; the Help page does not specify its channel or geographic rollout status. Chrome Help: Install and manage extensions

  1. Open Chrome and select the Extensions icon in the toolbar. Choose the relevant extension, or open its details from the Extensions menu.
  2. Choose the site-access setting that matches how you want the extension to work: when selected, on the current site, on specific sites, or on all sites.
  3. To manage a specific-site list, open the extension’s details and add or remove sites.

These controls apply to sites covered by the extension’s host permissions. They do not govern lower-level network access changed through VPN or proxy settings.

What each access choice means

Access choice Effect
When you select the extension Access is available when you actively select the extension.
On the current site The extension can access the site currently open in the tab.
On specific sites Access is limited to sites in the extension’s permitted-site list.
On all sites The extension can access all sites covered by its host permissions.

Limiting access can reduce what an extension is able to do on sites where it is not needed. It can also prevent site-dependent features from working until access is granted for the relevant site.

What the announcement means for extension developers

Chrome extensions declare API and host permissions in their manifest. Depending on the permissions, host access can support tasks such as fetching requests from an extension context, injecting content scripts, accessing cookies, and monitoring or modifying requests. Google recommends optional permissions when they suit the feature, so users can grant access at runtime rather than automatically receiving every permission in advance. Requesting access after it has been withheld

The 2024 announcement introduced permissions.addHostAccessRequest for extensions that need access to a page whose host permission the user has withheld. A user could grant persistent host access through the extensions menu or grant immediate access through a toolbar action. The request is associated with a tab and clears automatically when the user navigates to another origin. Chrome for Developers

Google advised developers to make requests only when access is genuinely needed. Repeated or irrelevant prompts may be ignored, and Chrome may throttle excessive requests. The announcement also said API calls would be ignored when the new menu was not enabled, so developers need to account for whether the feature is available rather than assume every user can receive a request.

How this differs from administrator controls

On managed Chrome devices, administrators can control whether users may install extensions based on the information those extensions can access. That is an organizational installation policy, not the same as an individual user choosing which sites an installed extension may access. Chrome Enterprise Help

Is the redesigned menu available in Chrome now?

Google’s November 2024 post documented an in-progress test. At that time, the API was enabled by default in Chrome Canary 133.0.6860.0 and higher, and the menu could be enabled with the “Extensions Menu Access Control” flag. Those were test-era instructions, not confirmation of current release availability. The official user-help and developer pages cited here do not establish whether the redesigned menu or API is now available across Chrome channels or regions.

If the redesigned controls are not visible, use the site-access options in the extension menu or its details page as documented in Chrome Help. The documented controls provide a way to review and limit site access without relying on the test-era flag.
