Google Chrome Keyboard Shortcuts: Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook Cheat Sheet

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome shortcuts vary by operating system: Windows and Linux generally use Ctrl, Mac uses ⌘ Command, and Chromebook uses Ctrl plus ChromeOS-specific hardware keys. The tables below put the most useful commands first, then cover navigation, bookmarks, accessibility, and DevTools.

Google’s official reference is the authority for changing or platform-specific commands: Chrome keyboard shortcuts (accessed September 2026).

Tabs and windows

Open, close and restore

Action Windows/Linux Mac
Close tab Ctrl + W or Ctrl + F4 ⌘ + W
Close window Ctrl + Shift + W or Alt + F4 ⌘ + Shift + W
Open home page in current tab Alt + Home Not listed in Google’s equivalent table
Quit Chrome Alt + F, then X ⌘ + Q (macOS command)

Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + T reopens recently closed tabs or windows in closure order; it is not a guarantee of recovering every session after a crash.

  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.

Choose a tab by position

  • Ctrl/⌘ + 1 through Ctrl/⌘ + 8 selects that numbered tab.
  • Ctrl/⌘ + 9 selects the rightmost tab, regardless of how many tabs are open.
  • On Windows/Linux, Ctrl + Shift + Page Up/Page Down moves the tab left or right.

For tab search, groups and selecting multiple tabs, use Chrome’s tab-management guidance: Chrome tab management.

Address bar and searching

Action Windows/Linux Mac
Focus and select the URL Ctrl + L, Alt + D, or F6 ⌘ + L
Search from the page Ctrl + K or Ctrl + E Use the current Mac command in Google’s reference
Search in a new tab Type a query, then Alt + Enter Use the Mac-specific command in Google’s reference
Add www. and .com Type a name, then Ctrl + Enter Ctrl + Return

Typing after Ctrl/⌘ + L replaces the selected URL. F6 cycles through browser interface areas, so it is not always a direct address-bar command. To search with another engine, type its keyword, press Tab, and enter the query. Prediction-removal shortcuts use platform-specific Delete or Forward Delete keys; Apple laptop keyboards may require Fn.

Navigation and page controls

Action Windows/Linux Mac
Back Alt + Left Arrow ⌘ + [ or ⌘ + Left Arrow
Forward Alt + Right Arrow ⌘ + ] or ⌘ + Right Arrow
Stop loading Esc Esc
Next find match Ctrl + G ⌘ + G
Previous find match Ctrl + Shift + G ⌘ + Shift + G
Open page source Ctrl + U Check Google’s current Mac list
Open a file Ctrl + O Check Google’s current Mac list
Full screen F11 Depends on macOS and keyboard settings

Find is limited to the current page. The “hard reload” combination asks Chrome to reload while ignoring cached content; it does not promise to erase every cache, service-worker response, proxy cache or developer-tool state.

Bookmarks, history, downloads and settings

Action Windows/Linux Mac
Bookmark all open tabs Ctrl + Shift + D Not listed in the same form
Show or hide bookmarks bar Ctrl + Shift + B ⌘ + Shift + B
Open Bookmark Manager Use Chrome menu ⌘ + Option + B
History Ctrl + H ⌘ + Y
Downloads Ctrl + J ⌘ + Shift + J
Chrome menu Alt + F Use the menu bar
Settings Use Chrome menu ⌘ + ,
Delete browsing data options Ctrl + Shift + Delete ⌘ + Shift + Delete
Switch user or Guest features Ctrl + Shift + M ⌘ + Shift + M
Help F1 Use the Help menu
Feedback Alt + Shift + I Use Chrome’s menu

Opening the delete-browsing-data screen does not immediately erase data; review the time range and categories before confirming. Incognito is a local browsing mode, not a promise of anonymity from websites, network operators, schools or employers.

Zoom and display

  • Page zoom: Ctrl/⌘ + + enlarges page content; Ctrl/⌘ + - reduces it; Ctrl/⌘ + 0 returns Chrome’s page zoom to its default.
  • System scaling: operating-system display scaling changes the wider desktop interface and is separate from Chrome page zoom.
  • Text accessibility: browser or operating-system text settings may be preferable for some users, but they are not the same as page zoom.

Keyboard-only navigation and accessibility

Action Shortcut
Move forward through focusable controls Tab
Move backward Shift + Tab
Toggle caret browsing F7
Cycle browser interface areas F6
Skip to web contents Ctrl + F6 on Windows/Linux

F6 can move among toolbars, the location bar and page-related panes, while Tab moves within the currently focused area. Chromium documents this model in Keyboard access. On Mac, some keyboard-navigation functions require Full Keyboard Access in macOS settings. If focus seems stuck, press Esc to close a dialog or menu, then try F6, Tab or Ctrl/⌘ + L.

Chrome DevTools shortcuts

Action Windows/Linux Mac
Open DevTools Ctrl + Shift + J or F12 ⌘ + Option + I
Open Console directly Ctrl + Shift + J ⌘ + Option + J
Inspect an element Ctrl + Shift + C ⌘ + Option + C
Open DevTools Command Menu Ctrl + Shift + P ⌘ + Shift + P

DevTools has its own shortcuts for switching panels, searching, docking, console history and inspector controls. See Google’s DevTools opening guide and complete DevTools shortcut reference. Google’s general Chrome list and DevTools documentation describe opening actions in different sections, so do not confuse opening DevTools with opening the Console or activating inspection.

Chromebook notes

Chromebook browser commands use Ctrl for most actions listed above, including tabs, address bar, find, bookmarks, history, downloads, reload, zoom and DevTools. ChromeOS also assigns its top-row hardware keys to brightness, volume, screenshots, locking and other device controls. Those are ChromeOS commands, not Chrome browser shortcuts. If a function-key command behaves unexpectedly, check whether the top row is in hardware-key mode or requires Fn.

When a shortcut does not work

  1. Confirm that you are using the Windows/Linux, Mac or Chromebook column.
  2. Check where focus is: webpage, address bar, browser toolbar, Find bar, dialog or an embedded editor.
  3. Press Esc to close an open menu, dialog or Find bar.
  4. Use F6 or Ctrl/⌘ + L to restore browser-level focus.
  5. Try a new tab or Chrome Guest profile to identify an extension conflict.
  6. Check laptop function-key mode, macOS Full Keyboard Access and ChromeOS hardware-key settings.
  7. Consider keyboard layout differences for symbols such as +, -, [ and ].

Web apps, games, terminals, extensions, Linux window managers and desktop utilities can capture keystrokes before Chrome acts on them. A shortcut that works in a normal tab may therefore behave differently inside a focused control.
