Recommended Free Tools
Verdict: Microsoft PowerToys is worth installing if you want one free, open-source toolkit to fix several recurring Windows annoyances. Its best utilities—FancyZones, PowerToys Run or Command Palette, PowerRename, Keyboard Manager, Text Extractor, Peek and Always On Top—can save real time. It is not a uniformly polished replacement for every specialist app, however, so enable only the tools that match your workflow.
What Microsoft PowerToys is
PowerToys is a Microsoft-maintained collection of free, open-source utilities for Windows customization and productivity. It extends Windows rather than replacing core components, and each utility can be enabled, configured or disabled independently. Some integrate with File Explorer; others run in the background and respond to keyboard shortcuts.
The project is Windows-only. The core suite has no subscription or purchase price, although optional AI providers connected to Advanced Paste may require an account, API key, cloud access or separate billing. The official overview is available at Microsoft Learn.
The latest stable release surfaced by Microsoft’s release page is PowerToys 0.100.0, released June 10, 2026. It includes both mature tools and more specialized or changing features, so judging the suite utility by utility is more useful than treating it as one uniform product.

What changed in PowerToys 0.100
Version 0.100 concentrates on the suite’s central experience as well as individual utilities. The official release notes highlight these changes:
- Redesigned Shortcut Guide: a side pane can detect the active application and show relevant Windows, application and enabled PowerToys shortcuts.
- Command Palette Extension Gallery: users can browse, install, update and remove community extensions from Command Palette settings.
- Multi-monitor Command Palette Dock support and improvements to Power Display.
- Move to .NET 10, auto-update reliability improvements and a smaller installer.
The release announcement is at the official GitHub releases page. Community extensions are a separate trust and maintenance consideration: availability, permissions and quality can vary, so do not assume every extension has the same status as a Microsoft-maintained utility.
Compatibility and installation
Microsoft’s installation documentation requires Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or newer, plus a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor. Setup can install the current stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime when required. ARM64 installer availability does not guarantee identical behavior for every shell integration or third-party extension.
Download through Microsoft’s documentation, the Microsoft Store, WinGet or the official GitHub release assets. Avoid unofficial “PowerToys” download sites.

Corporate policies can block installation, elevation, background utilities, Store access or GitHub downloads. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can also differ in shell behavior, so check the documentation for the specific utility you need.
The utilities most people should try first
FancyZones: the strongest reason for multi-monitor users
FancyZones lets you create reusable window layouts for ultrawide and multiple-monitor setups. It is more deliberate than standard Windows Snap when you repeatedly place the same applications in the same regions. It is especially useful for coding, research and dashboards.
Its limitations appear when displays are disconnected, scaling or resolution changes, virtual desktops, Remote Desktop sessions or full-screen software alter window placement. Native Snap and FancyZones can also compete for the same workflow. Reapply or revise a layout after a monitor change rather than assuming every window will return perfectly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →PowerToys Run: a fast keyboard launcher
PowerToys Run launches applications, searches files and folders, performs calculations and exposes system commands. Its default shortcut is Alt+Space, but it is configurable. PowerToys must be running and Run must be enabled for the launcher to respond; see Microsoft’s Run documentation.
Run is the established launcher experience, with plugins and broad system integration. Windows Search and Start can cover basic launching, while Flow Launcher may be preferable if launcher functionality, themes and plugins are your primary concern.

Command Palette: the newer extensible direction
Microsoft positions Command Palette as the evolution of PowerToys Run. Its extension gallery and dock are the main reasons to evaluate it separately. Run remains documented and active, so do not assume it has already disappeared or that Command Palette is universally faster or more reliable.
| Question | PowerToys Run | Command Palette |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Established launcher for apps, files, calculations and commands | Newer, extension-oriented command interface |
| Customization | Plugin-based | Extension Gallery plus command integrations |
| Best choice | Users who want a familiar, proven launcher | Users interested in extensibility and newer workflows |
| Status | Still documented by Microsoft | Microsoft’s evolving direction |
Check which launcher is enabled in your installed build before assigning competing shortcuts.
PowerRename: safer batch renaming
PowerRename adds search-and-replace, regular expressions, numbering, case conversion and a preview to File Explorer. The preview is the important safeguard: inspect every proposed filename before committing, especially when a pattern could match more files than intended. It is substantially more practical than renaming a large set manually, while remaining easier to understand than a full scripting solution.
Keyboard Manager: remap keys without a script
Keyboard Manager can remap individual keys and create shortcut replacements, useful for unfamiliar keyboards, ergonomic layouts and application-specific workflows. Remappings depend on PowerToys running, can conflict with software or OEM utilities, and may behave differently in elevated applications. Keep a record of custom mappings so a forgotten remap is not mistaken for a hardware fault.
Text Extractor: OCR from any visible screen area
Text Extractor copies text from screenshots, dialogs and other visible regions. Accuracy depends on resolution, font, punctuation and layout; columns and unusual typefaces often need correction. Check OCR output before putting it into a command, legal form or production document. Do not send confidential material to a cloud service merely to improve extraction.

Peek: preview files without opening their full application
Peek gives a quick preview from File Explorer, reducing the need to launch an editor or viewer just to identify a file. It is a small feature, but useful for folders containing many documents, images or source files.
Always On Top: pin a reference window
A shortcut can keep a calculator, notes window, video call or monitoring dashboard above other windows. The main trap is forgetting that a window is pinned and interpreting its behavior as a Windows bug; check the pin state before troubleshooting.
High-value specialist utilities
| Utility | Best use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Image Resizer | Resize images from File Explorer | Convenient for batches, but not a full image-processing suite |
| PowerToys Awake | Keep a PC awake temporarily | Does not replace careful system power-policy management |
| File Locksmith | Find which process is using a file | Some processes require elevation to identify |
| Mouse Utilities | Find or emphasize the pointer | Most useful for presentations and multi-monitor work |
| Quick Accent | Insert accented characters | Useful when changing keyboard layouts is inconvenient |
| Workspaces | Launch applications into set positions | Monitor changes and applications that control their own placement can disrupt it |
| Screen Ruler | Measure pixel distances | Measurements are screen-based, not physical dimensions |
| Color Picker | Read an on-screen color value | Color-management differences can affect design-critical work |
| Registry Preview | Inspect registry files before importing | Registry edits still require a backup and technical confidence |
| ZoomIt | Zoom, annotate or record demonstrations | Particularly valuable for teaching and technical presentations |
Developers may also value Hosts File Editor and Environment Variables. Power Display helps with complex monitor configurations, while Mouse Without Borders connects multiple Windows PCs. These are specialist tools, not universal recommendations.
Advanced Paste and the AI question
Advanced Paste can transform clipboard content and may use local or cloud model providers, depending on configuration. A preview track is adding on-device Phi Silica support for Advanced Paste on compatible Copilot+ PCs; this is not evidence that the entire stable PowerToys suite is an AI product. The preview has been reported at Windows Central.
Requirements differ by workflow: a provider may need an API key, network access, a downloaded model or compatible hardware. Local and cloud processing are not interchangeable from a privacy or cost perspective. If a provider is unavailable, use Advanced Paste’s non-AI transformations or disable it rather than assuming every installation supports the same models.

Practical drawbacks
- Background operation: keyboard hooks, launchers and shell features need PowerToys running, adding another startup process and settings layer.
- Uneven maturity: core utilities are generally more established than preview features and newer integrations.
- Shortcut conflicts: other launchers, keyboard layouts, OEM software and elevated applications can intercept shortcuts.
- Explorer and display edge cases: context-menu tools and window managers can be affected by monitor changes, full-screen programs, Remote Desktop and other shell extensions.
- Overlap with Windows: Snap layouts, Clipboard history, Snipping Tool OCR, Windows Search, Terminal and accessibility settings may already solve part of your problem.
- Run versus Command Palette: enabling both without changing hotkeys can create confusion.
Do not rely on generic claims that PowerToys is “lightweight.” Microsoft reports installer-size and updater improvements, but actual CPU, memory, startup and battery impact depends on enabled components and workload. A fair assessment is to measure your own machine, especially before enabling OCR, indexing, previews or many shell integrations.
Privacy, security and maintenance
PowerToys is open source, its issues and pull requests are visible, and official releases provide installer hashes. Those are trust signals, not a guarantee that every configuration or extension is risk-free.
- Install from Microsoft’s installation guidance, the Microsoft Store, WinGet or official GitHub releases.
- Enable only utilities you use and review their permissions and shortcut settings.
- Inspect community Command Palette extensions before installing them.
- Keep sensitive OCR or clipboard content local unless you understand the selected provider’s data policy.
- Keep a record of remappings, layouts and automation settings before upgrading or troubleshooting.
PowerToys checks for updates while running and offers manual update checking in Settings. Active maintenance brings fixes, but it can also bring regressions; stable releases are preferable to preview builds on a work machine.
PowerToys compared with alternatives
| Option | Choose it when | Where PowerToys differs |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Windows features | You need basic snapping, search, OCR, clipboard history or capture | PowerToys adds shortcuts, batch operations and deeper customization |
| Flow Launcher | Your main need is a themeable, plugin-heavy launcher with Everything integration | More focused as a launcher; PowerToys also covers windows, files, OCR and input |
| Stardock Fences | Your desktop is cluttered and you want rule-based icon groups, Folder Portals or tabs | Paid and narrower; PowerToys is free and broader but does not match Fences’ desktop organization depth |
| AutoHotkey, ShareX, Everything and dedicated utilities | You need advanced scripting, capture automation or highly specialized search | Specialists can go deeper, while PowerToys reduces the number of separate tools to maintain |
Flow Launcher lists version 2.1.3 dated June 8, 2026 on its official site. Fences offers single-device, multi-device and Object Desktop subscription options, a free trial and a permanent-license path; the cited product page does not establish a current dollar price.
Who should install PowerToys?
