To identify the license channel Windows is using, open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run slmgr /dlv. In the Windows Script Host dialog, read Description for labels such as RETAIL channel, OEM_DM channel or VOLUME_KMSCLIENT, then check License Status separately. Use Settings only to confirm activation and digital-license information; it usually does not identify the channel as Retail, OEM or Volume.
Activation status and license type are different
Windows exposes several related but separate facts:
- Activation status: whether the current installation is licensed right now.
- License channel: whether the installed licensing record is Retail, OEM or Volume.
- Activation method: whether activation uses a product key, digital entitlement, firmware key, KMS or MAK.
- Transfer rights: whether the applicable license terms allow use on another computer.
An activated installation is not automatically a Retail license, and activation alone does not prove that a copy is genuine or establish ownership and transfer rights. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows activation guidance.
Check whether Windows is activated in Settings
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Activation.
- Read Activation state or Activation status.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security > Activation.
- Read the activation message.
Common messages include “Windows is activated,” “Windows is activated with a digital license,” and “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.” A digital license can help with reactivation after a major hardware change when the edition and account relationship still match, but the message does not necessarily reveal whether the original entitlement was OEM, Retail or an upgrade.

Use slmgr to identify the installed channel
Abbreviated report
Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, type the following and press Enter:
slmgr /dliMicrosoft defines /dli as license information for the active installed Windows edition. To query all applicable installed products, use:
slmgr /dli allThe command normally opens a Windows Script Host dialog rather than printing a report in the terminal. A typical description resembles Windows(R) Operating System, RETAIL channel; Microsoft shows this format in its deployment documentation.

slmgr /dlv allThe detailed dialog can include:
- Name: the installed Windows product and edition.
- Description: the channel and activation model.
- License Status: whether that record is currently licensed.
- Partial Product Key: only the last five characters associated with that record.
- Activation ID: an identifier for the particular licensing record.
- Key Management Service machine and time-based fields when the device is a KMS client.
- Remaining Windows rearm count: a servicing value, not a license type.
Microsoft documents the /dli, /dlv and all options in its slmgr reference.
Check whether activation expires
Run:
slmgr /xpr/xpr displays an activation expiration date and is particularly useful for KMS clients. Retail and MAK activation is generally perpetual rather than periodically renewed, although the exact entitlement still depends on the applicable license terms.

Interpret the channel shown in Description

Why the partial product key can be misleading on OEM PCs
slmgr never displays the complete 25-character key. On Windows 10 version 1703 and later OEM scenarios, Microsoft warns that /dli or /dlv may show a partial default key instead of the unique OA3 key injected into firmware. Therefore, do not expect the five displayed characters to match the firmware key, and do not treat a mismatch as proof of counterfeit activation.

What the result does—and does not—prove
A Retail result does not prove
- The current user purchased the license.
- The key has never been replaced.
- The copy is genuine.
- The license is transferable in every situation.
An OEM result does not prove
- The original hardware configuration is unchanged.
- The displayed partial key is the unique firmware key.
- The license can be moved to another computer.
- The current edition is the factory-installed edition.
A Volume result does not prove
- Piracy.
- That activation is currently valid or permanent.
- The user owns an individual Retail license.
- The computer is personally owned rather than organization-managed.
Activation itself is not a complete authenticity test. For purchase or entitlement evidence, use Microsoft Store order history, retailer confirmation, packaging or a Certificate of Authenticity, the OEM invoice, or your organization’s licensing records.

slmgr is not recognized
Call the script explicitly:
cscript %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /dlvYou can substitute /dli for the detailed report.
No dialog appears
Run the same cscript command. Console-hosted Windows Script Host output can expose an error that the graphical dialog does not show.
The status says Notification or another non-licensed state
Treat this first as an activation problem, not proof of a wrong channel. Recheck Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10, and record the displayed error code and edition.

The channel does not match the computer’s history
Windows may have been reinstalled with another key, upgraded from Home to Pro, upgraded from an earlier release, or left with several applicable licensing records. Run:
slmgr /dlv allCompare Name, Description and License Status for each record. A digital entitlement or an OEM default key can also make the result look different from the original purchase evidence.
A personal PC shows KMS or another volume configuration
Legitimate explanations include prior business or school ownership, current employer management, or a refurbisher’s organizational image. It may also indicate an unsuitable edition, a machine still tied to a former organization, or an unauthorized activation method. Contact the seller or organization and obtain a properly assigned license; do not use cracks or third-party activators.
Complementary checks
Confirm the edition
Run winver or open Settings > System > About. This identifies Home, Pro or Enterprise, but edition alone does not identify the channel.

Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. A work or school connection can explain KMS or Enterprise licensing. Its absence does not prove the installation is Retail.
Use PowerShell for inventory
Technicians can inventory licensing records with:
Get-CimInstance SoftwareLicensingProduct | Where-Object { $_.Name -like "Windows*" -and $_.PartialProductKey } | Select-Object Name, Description, LicenseStatus, PartialProductKeyPowerShell, WMI, Event Viewer licensing events, VAMT and licensing portals help administrators monitor fleets, but they report Windows licensing records rather than independently proving purchase entitlement. Microsoft’s monitoring options are described at Volume Activation monitoring.
