Changing the phone number on your Google Account is not the same as moving Google Authenticator to a new phone. Google documents Authenticator code availability as a device-transfer or account-sync issue: codes saved to your Google Account sync when you sign in to that same account in Authenticator on a new device, while codes used without an account can be moved by exporting and scanning a QR code. Google says an account-level number change affects only some services, so check any separate phone settings for 2-Step Verification rather than assuming one change updates everything.
First, identify what changed
You changed only your phone number
A number update in Google Account settings does not necessarily change the phone number held by every Google service. Google says some services, including 2-Step Verification settings, may need their number managed separately. Review the Phone and Security sections of your Google Account and the settings of the service you use. Google also says a new number may take up to a week to become usable for identity verification during sensitive actions, such as changing a password. A number-only change is not an Authenticator code transfer. Google’s support guidance describes code access on a new phone in terms of syncing or transferring codes; it does not make an absolute promise about every individual Authenticator entry after a number change.

You used Authenticator without signing in
Google supports moving codes with the app’s export and import tools. You need the old phone with the codes and the new phone. On the old device, open Authenticator, choose its transfer or export option, select the accounts, and display the QR code. On the new device, choose the transfer or import option and scan the code. If there are many entries, the app may generate more than one QR code. Keep the old device available until you have confirmed the entries arrived; do not wipe it first. Google’s menu labels can vary by platform and app version. Google Authenticator Help: Transfer your Google Authenticator codes.
Choose the right way to move codes
| Method | What it requires | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Google Account sync | Codes saved to or synced with a Google Account, and access to that same account on the new phone. | Sign in to the same Google Account in Authenticator on the new phone, then confirm the needed entries appear. |
| Manual QR transfer | The old phone with its Authenticator entries and the new phone. Google says to use the latest app version on the old phone. | Export selected accounts from the old phone and scan the displayed QR code or codes with the new phone. |
These are different routes: signing in on the new phone is the documented sync path for codes saved to an account; QR export/import is the documented option for users who kept Authenticator separate from a Google Account.

If the old phone is gone or you cannot get a code
For signing in to your Google Account
Try another second step already configured for the account or use Google’s account-recovery process. Google backup codes are a fallback when you cannot get a code from a phone, text, call, or Authenticator, including after losing a phone or changing a number. Each code works once; generating a replacement set deactivates the previous set. These codes help with the Google Account sign-in flow, not with restoring every third-party account listed in Authenticator. For third-party accounts in Authenticator
If a third-party code was not synced or transferred and the old phone is unavailable, contact that service and follow its own account-recovery or authenticator-reset procedure. Google’s account recovery process does not establish that Google can restore another service’s authentication secret.

Safe sequence when changing a number or phone
- Separate the changes. Decide whether you changed only the number, replaced the phone, or did both.
- Check number settings. Review the Phone and Security sections of your Google Account and any separate 2-Step Verification phone settings. Update recovery details and allow Google’s stated delay before relying on the new number for sensitive verification. Google Account Help: Change the phone number on your account.
- Use sync if your codes are saved to your Google Account. Install Authenticator on the new phone, sign in to the same Google Account in the app, and verify the required entries are visible. Google Authenticator Help: Transfer your Google Authenticator codes.
- Use QR transfer if you used Authenticator without an account. With both phones available, export from the old phone and import on the new one. Confirm the entries before wiping or retiring the old phone. Google Authenticator Help: Transfer your Google Authenticator codes.
- Prepare a Google sign-in fallback. Save backup codes securely before you need them. If you are already locked out, try another configured second step or Google’s account-recovery flow. Google says changes to recovery information may take up to seven days to take effect. Google Account Help: Sign in with backup codes and Google Account Help: Add or change recovery information.
