Start with an overview to scan a topic, then open its detail report for more context. Use Acquisition to investigate where users came from, Engagement for what they did, Monetization for revenue, and Retention for repeat use. When a standard report cannot answer a more specific question, use Explore.
Where to find reports in Google Analytics
In your Google Analytics property, select Reports from the left navigation. The Reports area includes the Reports snapshot, Realtime, and predefined reports. The collections and reports visible to you depend on the property’s configuration and your access; an administrator or editor may customize the navigation.

Use an overview to scan a topic
An overview report brings together cards that summarize a topic and surface information available in related reports. It is useful for a quick check before deciding what to investigate.

Use a detail report to investigate
A detail report provides a closer look at a specific area, such as ecommerce purchases. Follow a card or topic into the relevant detail report when you need to inspect the underlying information. Google explains the distinction in About overview reports.
Match the report to the question
| Question | Report area | What it helps you examine |
|---|---|---|
| Where are my new users coming from? | Acquisition | How users arrived at your site or app. |
| What pages or screens are getting the most views? | Engagement | What users do and which pages or screens they visit. |
| How much revenue did users generate? | Monetization | Revenue and related monetization activity. |
| Are users coming back? | Retention | Return behavior and engagement over time. |
These areas form a useful path through the user journey, but the Life cycle collection may not be present in every property’s default navigation. An editor or administrator can add it through the report library. See Google’s documentation on the Life cycle collection. For question-led examples such as “How many users did I get last month?”, Google News Initiative’s Build your audience with GA4 training is another reference.

Change the date range and compare results
Use the date range control in a report to choose the period you want to examine. You can also compare periods, or compare subsets such as Android and iOS users, when the report supports the comparison. Check that the periods and populations match the question before drawing a conclusion.
When you need to share a result, Google Analytics lets you share a report link or export a report as a PDF or CSV. Available report controls can vary with the report and property.

When to use Explore instead of a standard report
Standard reports are a good fit when you need to monitor a known metric or use a familiar, preconfigured view. Choose Explore when you need a more flexible breakdown, want to investigate an open-ended question, or need to examine a sequence or group over time. Explorations support ad hoc analysis, including free-form, cohort, and funnel techniques.
| Standard report | Exploration | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Monitoring a known metric or scanning a topic. | Investigating a question that needs a custom analysis. |
| Typical view | Preconfigured summary cards, tables, or detail data. | Custom dimensions, metrics, filters, and segments. |
| Consider | Which report and fields are available in the property. | Field compatibility, retention period, sampling, thresholds, and processing time. |
For a cohort exploration, define the inclusion and return criteria, choose a breakdown and metric, then examine how groups behave over daily, weekly, or monthly periods. Google defines a cohort as a group that shares a characteristic. Cohort exploration uses device data; Google states that User-ID is not considered when creating a cohort. Learn more in the Cohort exploration guide.
Rank #4
Explorations have documented capacity limits and may be sampled when a query covers more than 10 million events, according to Google’s current Analytics Help documentation. Check the exploration’s sampling indicator and tooltip rather than assuming every result is complete and unsampled. See Get started with Explorations.
How to interpret retention reporting
The Retention overview can include new and returning users, cohort retention, engagement by cohort, daily return behavior, and average 120-day value. Google’s help page describes user retention as the percentage of users who return each day during their first 42 days. These are descriptions of the report and its measurement window, not benchmarks that every property should meet. Consult the Retention overview report for the current definition and report contents.
Why reports and explorations may not match
A difference between a standard report and an exploration does not, by itself, prove that tracking is broken. The two surfaces can differ because they support different fields and filters, use different data scopes, or are affected by privacy thresholds, behavioral modeling, data-retention settings, sampling, or processing time. Review the report and exploration settings and any notices shown in the interface. Google’s explanation is in Data differences between reports and explorations.
Realtime data appears first after data collection begins; other reports appear shortly afterward, and some data requires additional setup. If expected activity is missing, first check that collection is configured for the relevant site or app and that the reporting period includes the activity. Google describes the available collection approaches in Tagging for Google Analytics; Google Tag Manager is one way to create and install Google tags, not a requirement for navigating reports that already contain data.

Google’s Analytics Academy on Skillshop offers free online courses and a certification, including material on setting up a property, collecting data, and using reports. For implementation support, Google’s developer resource points to certified companies and sales partners; the right choice depends on whether you need help with data collection or with analysis.
