Google AI Overviews vs. Featured Snippets: What’s Different for SEO?

Featured snippets surface selected page excerpts; AI Overviews generate summaries with supporting links. Here’s what the distinction means for SEO and measurement.

A featured snippet is an excerpt selected from one website; an AI Overview is a Google-generated summary with links to explore supporting sources. Neither is something site owners can switch on or guarantee. For both, Google’s guidance is to follow established SEO fundamentals—not to rely on special AI markup or a formatting trick.

How the two Google Search features differ

What to compare Featured snippet AI Overview
What appears A selected excerpt from a web page that Google’s systems consider useful for the query. A generative-AI summary or synthesis, with links intended to help people explore further.
How sources appear The excerpt is associated with its source page. Google says a click may take the visitor to the relevant passage on that page. Links support the generated response. Their layout and the sources shown may vary.
How it is selected Google’s systems decide whether a page is a good fit for a particular query; publishers cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link. Eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or show it.

In short, a featured snippet puts a passage from a page in the foreground. An AI Overview presents a generated answer and links. Google describes those links as a way to explore further; it does not promise that every source relevant to a query will appear.

Featured snippets: no selection switch

Google’s answer to “How can I mark my page as a featured snippet?” is “You can’t.” Its systems choose whether a page suits a query. Google documents snippet controls that let site owners limit previews, not a setting that demands selection.

AI Overviews: Search eligibility comes first

To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a Search snippet. Even when it meets those conditions, appearance is not guaranteed. Google’s documentation also says meeting Search requirements does not guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed, or served for a query.

What SEO work applies to both?

Google Search Central says, “The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode).” In practical terms, focus on making useful content accessible and discoverable through ordinary Search fundamentals:

  • Allow Googlebot to crawl the pages you want considered, and ensure they meet Google Search technical requirements and policies.
  • Make important pages easy to find through internal links.
  • Provide important information in text where relevant, rather than making it available only in a format Google may not interpret as intended.
  • Maintain a sound page experience and make sure structured data accurately reflects content people can see on the page.
  • Write for the page’s audience. Google’s July 2026 guidance says there is no required content-chunking pattern or ideal page length for AI features.

Google says special schema.org markup, AI text files, and new machine-readable files are not required for visibility in its Search AI features. Structured data can still support Search features when appropriate, but it is not a shortcut to an AI Overview or featured snippet.

How to measure visibility and traffic

Google says appearances in AI features are included in overall Search Console Search traffic under the Web search type. Its later guidance also points site owners to a Generative AI performance report. Google’s June 2026 announcement described added AI-visibility insights and a Search Console site control; a footnote on that page says rollout to all websites worldwide was completed on August 31, 2026. Because reporting and controls can change, check the current Search Console interface and documentation for your account before relying on a specific view or setting.

These reporting options do not establish a universal click-through, conversion, or revenue advantage for either feature. Google has said that people who click from AI Overview results are more likely to spend time on the destination, but that is Google’s own statement—not an independent causal estimate of publisher outcomes across markets and query types. The official guidance cited here does not quantify a general traffic effect for AI Overview links versus featured snippets.

What Google’s reach figures do—and don’t—tell site owners

In June 2026, Google said AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users. Those are company-published audience figures, not measures of publisher clicks, conversions, or SEO results. Reach alone does not show how much traffic a particular site receives from either feature.

Accuracy still matters in AI-generated answers

Google warns users that “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes” and advises checking important information against sources and other results. For publishers, that is a reason to make pages accurate, clear, and useful as destinations—not a guarantee that a citation will appear or send traffic.
